Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses that are used to replace the natural lenses of the eye during cataract surgery or to correct refractive errors. However, advancements in traditional IOL technology have addressed some of these limitations. For instance, the development of aspheric monofocal IOLs has reduced the need for glasses after surgery, providing improved distance vision and reduced glare and halos. The use of hydrophobic materials has also reduced the buildup of gunk on the lens, making it easier to keep clean. Moreover, traditional IOLs have also found their use in complex or high-risk cataract surgeries, as they have a lower risk of complications compared to other types of IOLs. This has led to their continued demand, especially in developing countries where the majority of cataract surgeries are performed. In conclusion, while new and advanced types of IOLs have emerged in recent years, traditional or monofocal IOLs continue to hold a significant demand in the global market. Their cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and low risk of complications make them a favorable choice in many healthcare settings.
However, with the continuous advancements in technology, it will be interesting to see how traditional IOLs will evolve to meet the changing demands of patients and ophthalmic surgeons.
