Market Dynamics
Italy is the largest producer and exporter of ammonium nitrate, accounting for around 45% of the world production. The demand for ammonium nitrate in Italy has been increasing at a steady rate over the past few years due to its proven effectiveness in a variety of applications. In 2018, the Italian ammonium nitrate market was estimated at almost $2 billion, with demand concentrated mainly in the fertilizer and explosives sectors, while other end-uses include metal fabrication, automotive, and pulp, paper & Packaging. The Fertilizer sector accounts for around 80% of the total ammonium nitrate consumption in Italy and is expected to remain the fastest-growing sector over the forecast period. Growing demand for fertilizer in the region due to increasing population and rising crop yields will lead to increased consumption of ammonium nitrate. The Explosive manufacturing sector is the second leading consumer of ammonium nitrate in the country. This sector is mainly driven by the increasing demand for explosives from the construction, mining, and military segment. The military segment remains the main consumer of explosives in this sector, driven by the growing demand for ammunition in the country.
The automotive, metal fabrication, and pulp, paper & packaging sectors also consume a significant amount of ammonium nitrate in Italy. Although, these sectors are each relatively small consumers in terms of total demand but their demand is expected to show strong growth over the forecast period as well. Overall, the demand for this commodity in Italy is expected to remain strong over the next decade, with an expected CAGR of 5.2%. The fertilizer and explosivess sectos are both expected to remain the major contributors to Italy’s ammonium nitrate demand over the forecast period, with the automotive, metal fabrication, and pulp, paper & packaging sectors also expected to show healthy growth. The demand for ammonium nitrate is expected to be further driven by the country’s efforts to increase production of nitrogen-based fertilizer in the coming years. By providing several incentives and subsidies to domestic producers, the country will witness an increased production of nitrogen-based fertilizer in the near future, in turn raising the demand for ammonium nitrate.
