Market Dynamics
South Korea’s base oil market is expected to experience a gradual but steady growth in demand over the next decade and beyond. This demand is driven by increasing demand for frictional materials, automotive lubricants, and hydraulic fluids, as well as tightening government regulations governing oil products. In the short term, growth in demand is expected to be moderate as the global economy still works to recover from the financial crisis of 2008. However, as stronger economic growth continues apace in Asia, demand is likely to accelerate in subsequent years. The majority of base oil to be consumed in South Korea will come from domestic production. This is due to stringent national regulations prohibiting the importation of crude oil from out of country sources. As such, the availability of base oil supplies is expected to remain relatively high domestically, and local refiners should remain competitive in this global market. Furthermore, the South Korean oil refinery industry is amongst the most efficient and technologically advanced in the world, and as such, is likely to remain competitive years into the future.
This is beneficial for both manufacturers and consumers of base oil, as higher levels of efficiency should result in lower prices for base oil products, making them more affordable to a wider range of buyers. In addition to the base oil supplies produced domestically, South Korea will also be becoming increasingly reliant on imports from China, India, and Saudi Arabia in the coming years. As these countries’ oil production capabilities continue to expand, their supply of base oil products to South Korea is expected to grow and drive down market prices. It is expected that the stable macroeconomic conditions in South Korea coupled with its expanding base oil imports will continue to fuel the country’s demand for the product over the next decade and beyond. As such, the South Korean base oil market is poised to experience consistent demand growth for the foreseeable future.
