The global sodium bicarbonate market is characterized by the presence of many global and regional vendors. The market is highly competitive, with all the players competing to gain market share. Intense competition, frequent changes in government policies, and maritime regulations are key factors that impact market growth. The vendors compete based on cost, product quality, reliability, and aftermarket services. It is crucial for the vendors to provide cost-efficient and high-quality sodium bicarbonate in order to survive and succeed in an intensely competitive market environment.
Michael Porter’s Five Forces model offers a framework to study the global sodium bicarbonate market. Strategic business managers, trying to gain an edge over competing firms in the global sodium bicarbonate market, can utilize this model to better comprehend the industry in which the company operates. The components of each of the forces and the degree of impact of each element in the context of the global sodium bicarbonate market have been broken down and analyzed.
Threat of New Entrants
Taking all the past and present market trends, forces, and scenarios into consideration, the threat of new entrants to the existing players in the global sodium bicarbonate market is expected to be moderate. This can be attributed to rapid growth in demand and developments in the animal nutrition and food & beverage industries, which are likely to incentivize new entrants in this market. However, the presence of several tier-1 players in the market poses a barrier to new entrants. The regulatory scenario also hinders the entry of new players. Manufacturers must comply with the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations for concentration limits at processing plants.
Bargaining Power of suppliers
The suppliers in the global sodium bicarbonate market are providers of soda ash. There are several suppliers present in the market with limited differentiation in raw material. Market players can, therefore, easily switch between suppliers. However, the majority of sodium bicarbonate manufacturers enter into long-term contracts with soda ash providers to ensure continuous supply, affecting switching costs. Moreover, soda ash is used extensively in the manufacture of other products such as glass, soap and detergents, chemicals, and pulp & paper, as well as in metal processing and water treatment. This provides the suppliers a degree of leverage over the market players. Thus, the bargaining power of suppliers in the global soda ash market is expected to be moderate.
Bargaining power of buyers
The buyers in the global sodium bicarbonate market are end-use industries such as animal feed, food & beverages, chemical, cosmetics and personal care, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textile, among others. There is high buyer concentration across these end-use industries and low product differentiation in terms of cost and grade. This results in low switching costs and an overall high bargaining power of buyers.
Threat of Substitutes
Sodium acetate is often used as a substitute for sodium bicarbonate in the healthcare industry. Several medical centers and pharmaceutical drug manufacturers prefer using sodium acetate to reduce the level of toxicity. Potassium bicarbonate is also a substitute for sodium bicarbonate in the food industry where it is used as a leavening agent for bakery products. Hence, the threat of substitutes in the global sodium bicarbonate market is projected to be high.
Threat of Rivalry
The global sodium bicarbonate market is estimated to register a moderate threat of rivalry due to the significant presence of medium-scale manufacturers, especially based in Asia-Pacific. Additionally, tier-1 players in this market are increasingly investing in the development of technical grades of sodium bicarbonate. The market has a considerable concentration of medium-sized manufacturers looking to expand their production capacities while the tier-1 players are focused on technical expertise to develop eco-friendly products.
