In the context of the Almond Market, each of the five forces plays a critical role in shaping the competitive landscape.
Porter’s five forces model: GLOBAL Almond Market
Threat of New Entrants
The threat of new entrants in the global almond market is generally low. Almond production requires significant capital investment in specialized agricultural land, irrigation infrastructure, and modern processing facilities. Leading production regions, such as California, benefit from decades of experience, well-established orchards, and robust supply chains that create high entry barriers. Establishing brand recognition and distribution networks at scale is costly and time-consuming. Also, new entrants have to face the complexity of material compliance, i.e., obtaining food safety certifications and export controls, etc. Market entry is further restricted by the technological expertise in the cultivations, management of pests and harvesting. All these issues bring the market share of the existing players such as Wonderful Pistachios & Almonds, Blue Diamond Growers, and biggest exporters in Australia and Spain to unify. Small-scale farmers have problems in terms of competitive upscaling of production or joining global supply chains. But at the same time some niche competitors who concentrate in organic or specialty almonds may see gaps emerging with increasing consumer interest in premium and sustainable products.
Hence, the threat of new entrants in the Almond market is expected to be Low
Bargaining Power of Suppliers
Suppliers in the almond market include growers, labor providers, agricultural input vendors, and equipment suppliers. Almond growing is heavily concentrated in a few global regions, particularly California, which supplies over 80% of the world's almonds. This geographic concentration gives growers some leverage over processors and distributors. However, most almond growers are relatively small-scale farmers with limited individual negotiating power. Supply of inputs like water and labor can be critical constraints, for example, water scarcity in California strains production costs and bargaining dynamics. Shortage of labor at harvest may escalate the prices of labor and supplier strength. On the input side, agricultural chemicals and irrigation equipments suppliers have a diversified customer base which constrains their power. Supplier power is abridged when large almond processors engage in practice of vertical integration, meaning that upstream activities are internalized. Dynamics of suppliers are also affected by improvements in farm technology and seed development. Organic or sustainably outsourced almond suppliers might be able to sell with premium pricing.
Hence, the bargaining power of suppliers in the Almond market is expected to be Moderate.
Threat of Substitute Products
While almonds are favored for their nutritional profile high protein, fiber, healthy fats and versatile applications in food, beverages, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, several alternative nuts and seed products compete for consumer spend. Walnuts, cashews, pistachios, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, and soy products serve as substitutes in various culinary and industrial uses. Plant-based milk alternatives like oat or soy milk also compete with almond milk in dairy replacement markets. Consumer preferences for taste, price, nutrition, and allergy considerations influence substitution patterns. However, almonds maintain a unique position due to their taste, texture, and health benefits, supporting strong demand despite alternatives. Growing health trends favoring specific nutrients like vitamin E and antioxidants in almonds limit substitution. Substitutes face their own supply chain and pricing challenges, which mitigates their threat relative to almonds.
Hence, the threat of substitutes in the Almond market is expected to be Moderate.
Bargaining Power of Buyers
Buyers in the global almond market include retail chains, food manufacturers, distributors, and end consumers. Large retail chains and food manufacturers purchase almonds in significant volumes and can leverage their buying power to negotiate prices and contract terms, especially given multiple global suppliers. The availability of substitutes and alternative nuts (cashews, walnuts) further enhances buyer power as they can switch products if almond prices rise. Consumer awareness and demand for quality, organic certification, and sustainability also push buyers to seek differentiated product offerings. Buyers can exert pressure for supply chain transparency and favorable payment terms. In addition, the expanding e-commerce platforms allow consumers to exert soft pressure by favoring brands based on price, quality, and ethical sourcing. Large buyers’ access to global almond supplies, particularly from the U.S., Australia, and Spain, increases their influence.
Hence, the bargaining power of buyers in the Almond market is expected to be High.
Intensity of Rivalry
Rivalry within the global almond market is high, driven by intense competition among established players and producers across regions. The U.S. (California) dominates global almond production, competing with rising almond producers in Australia, Spain, and the Middle East. Brands like Blue Diamond Growers, Wonderful Almonds, and Diamond of California compete primarily on quality, product differentiation, and distribution strength. Competition is being aggravated by the attraction of growing numbers of processors, exporters, and value-added product developers in the market. Innovation in products (e.g., flavored almonds, almond snacks, almond ingredients) and branding are of significant importance in the choice of market shares. Price competition is caused by the dynamics of global supply with climatic factors and water supply as also the result of trade policies. There is also an increased level of market competition due to an increase in consumer demands of organic and sustainably provided almonds, and companies are investing on certification and traceability. Manufacturers are also pressured by the retailers that request better quality and accountable supply chain.
Hence, the intensity of rivalry in the Almond market is expected to be High.

The rising adoption of plant-based diets and lactose intolerance worldwide has further accelerated the demand for almond-based products such as almond milk, almond butter, and almond flour.
Geographically, production and export are dominated by North America, mainly the United States where California has huge almond orchards-contributing about 80 per cent of the global supply. The rising application of online business systems has enhanced accessibility to consumers thus escalating intake of almonds in world markets. In the meantime, others such as Asia-Pacific are experiencing a high growth in markets because of increased disposable income levels and increased health concerns.
The opportunities and challenges exist in markets influencing dynamics. The opportunities are presented by the fact that product innovation, the growing fields of application in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, and a soaring demand of functional foods and products in sports nutrition elaborated on the almond protein make good headway. Nevertheless, some other challenges in the market include stringent food safety standards, price fluctuations due to climatic and geopolitical forces, trade restrictions, and high costs of production, especially water-demanding production as well as high wages..
Increasing Demand for Plant-Based Products
The increasing demand for plant-based products is a significant driver for the global almond products market, propelled by changing consumer preferences toward healthier and more sustainable food choices. Almond-derived products such as almond milk, almond flour, almond butter, and almond-based snacks are increasingly favored for their nutritional benefits and alignment with vegan, vegetarian, and lactose-free diets. For example, almond milk sales in the United States reached $1.55 billion as of July 2024, reflecting substantial year-over-year growth, and almond milk accounted for 18% of the plant-based milk market in Germany in 2023, up from 17% in 2022. This demonstrates a strong consumer shift from traditional dairy to plant-based alternatives driven by health consciousness and food intolerance concerns such as lactose intolerance.
According to the Good Food Institute (GFI), in 2023, 44% of U.S. households purchased plant-based milk, with nearly 15% of total retail milk dollar sales attributed to plant-based options. More importantly, there was a significant cross-category adoption, with 25 percent of households making purchases in plant-based milk category also buying plant-based meat and seafood. Families that have children particularly were most prone to increased consumption of plant-based milk establishing a demand trend related to families.
Almonds are among the sources of healthy fats, dietary fiber, vegetable protein, and microelements such as vitamin E and magnesium, which is why the products made of almonds should be interesting to buyers of nutritious and functional foods. New developments of premium and functionally fortified almond milk products with added protein, fiber and adaptogens, as well as micronutrients to address a variety of health requirements, such as stress relievers and digestive health are being added.
Additionally, the consumers have also been motivated to take almond products due to the world trends in favor of the concept of sustainability and environmental awareness since almond products are considered to be more environmentally friendly as compared to animal dairy products. Almond production and innovation is under North America especially the U.S. and fast developing societies such as urban China and South Korea are embracing almond products with enthusiasm.

As shown in the 2024 data, plant-based milk constitutes a substantial segment within the overall plant-based food category, with $2.8 billion in dollar sales and a dollar share of 13.9%. While the category experienced a slight decline in 1-year dollar and unit growth, its high household penetration of 40% and repeat rate of 76% indicate a strong, established consumer base. Almond milk is a dominant player within this category, accounting for a significant portion of plant-based milk sales, despite a slight decrease in its share as other alternatives like oat milk gain traction. The continued preference for plant-based milk alternatives, with almond milk being a prominent choice, directly translates into a sustained demand for almonds as a key ingredient, thereby influencing the global almond market.
Growing awareness of nutritional benefits
Growing awareness of the nutritional benefits of almonds is a powerful driver for the global almond market. Almonds are highly nutritious, offering a rich source of healthy monounsaturated fats, protein, fiber, and essential micronutrients like vitamin E, magnesium, and manganese. For example, just one ounce (about 23 almonds) provides nearly 50% of the daily value of vitamin E, a potent antioxidant that helps reduce inflammation and supports skin health. This nutrient density makes almonds attractive to consumers seeking natural, nutrient-rich foods that contribute to overall wellness.
In 2025 clinical trial by Oregon State University found that eating just 2 ounces of almonds daily significantly lowered total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol, reduced waist circumference, and decreased markers of gut inflammation in adults with metabolic syndrome a cluster of conditions increasing cardiovascular disease risk. This puts a point in favor of almonds promoting heart and metabolic health; it would benefit almost forty percent of the adults in the U.S. stricken by metabolic syndrome.
Moreover, almonds influence the intestinal microbiome positively, which enhances the health of beneficial bacteria, positively affecting the digestive system and the immune system. Such prebiotic effect helps in the overall health of the gut and system. Metanalysis also demonstrates that almonds may help lower other inflammatory factors, such as C-reactive protein, which correlates to the prevention of chronic diseases.
Practically, this leads to the increasing consumer awareness about functional food ingredients and snack such as almonds. The daily nutritional recommendations encourage serving almonds as a way to maintain weight management, heart health, cognition and glucose levels. As an example, one of the 2024 studies associated frequent almond intake with reduced risks of cognitive decline among the elderly persons.
Expansion in end‑use applications
Almonds and their derivatives are now integral not only in traditional food and beverage sectors but also in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, animal nutrition, and even specialized industrial uses. The plant-based movement has also reinforced almond milk, butter, and yogurt as mainstream dairy substitutes globally.
Nevertheless, outside of the food space, almonds are experiencing healthy development in the beauty and wellness category. Almond oil is considered as an emollient and anti-aging compound enabling it to be used in cosmetic products as hair and skin care products. Research has supported its effectiveness in terms of moisturizing and promoting epidermal health which has further led to its rise in use in high end natural cosmetics. Pharmaceutical manufactures use the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of almond oils in medical formulations involving skin ailments and cardiac health issues, which goes hand in hand with consumer confidence rising regarding plant-based makeup.
Besides, almonds are incorporated into animal diets to promote the health of livestock as one of the least considered yet an important market segment. A novel example is the employment of almond by-products in the fortification of food with functional characteristics of antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, which are indicative of industry trends of both upcycling and sustainability.
Demand for Lactose-free Products
According to scientific literature and genetic research, about 68% of the global population suffers from some degree of lactose malabsorption, making traditional dairy difficult to digest for billions of people.
Surge in almond-based protein for sports nutrition
The surge in almond-based protein products presents an exciting opportunity for the global almond market, particularly driven by expanding demand within the sports nutrition sector. Almond protein is increasingly recognized as a premium plant-based protein source with a favorable nutrient profile, including high protein content, essential amino acids, fiber, healthy fats, and micronutrients such as vitamin E and magnesium. Its clean-label nature being non-GMO, allergen-friendly, and free from artificial additives—makes it highly attractive to health-conscious consumers and athletes seeking natural muscle recovery and energy support.
Since the past few years, almond protein has exploded in many sports categories such as protein powders, ready-to-drink shakes, energy bars, and the like. Mild flavour and creamy texture of almond protein, as an example, will offer considerable benefits in formulations compared to the other plant proteins, which may taste bitter or grainy. According to the Almond Board of California, clinical data indicate that regular almond consumption may help to alleviate muscle recovery as it decreases the level of creatine kinase after exercise workouts that is a major indicator of muscle damage.
For increased purity and precisely defined protein content, leading manufacturers are developing almond protein isolates and concentrates that are clean enough to include in a wide variety of product segments in addition to sports nutrition including functional foods and non-dairy, plant-based dairy alternatives. Organizations such as Blue Diamond Growers and The Wonderful Company are on the tip of the spear, using both the environmental friendliness of almond protein and its growing consumer acceptance as factors to put it on the leading edge as a high-end plant-based protein ingredient.
Online Retail Growth
With the rapid rise of e-commerce platforms worldwide, almond products have become more accessible to diverse consumers who prioritize convenience, product variety, and detailed product information. This trend is supported by increasing internet penetration, mobile device usage, and shifting shopping behaviors accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lifestyle changes.
For example, in 2023, U.S. e-commerce sales reached over $1.1 trillion with a 7.6% growth from the previous year, creating a robust foundation for almond product sales online. This online transformation provides manufacturers and retailers with a breakout to other conventional (brick and mortar) supply routes, where they can make direct-to-customer transactions, which minimizes distribution expenses and maximizes profitability. Personalized marketing, subscription services as well as indepth customer reviews which increase the purchasing confidence of the high-quality almond products are also facilitated through online platforms.
Raw almonds, roasted nuts, almond butter, almond milk and new product offerings like chocolate-dipped almonds have all proven to be strong sellers online in almond-based products. E-commerce is used by brands such as Blue Diamond Growers to launch innovative products as well as to develop loyal consumers.
Additionally, all specialty stores, health food stores and direct farm-to-or consumer categories perform very well on the digital medium and frames around the health-conscious and premium segment like those with taste preference of organic and sustainably harvested almonds. The ability to make quick inventory changes and large product selection satisfies the trends of consumers toward personalized nutrition and clean-label products that online retailing accommodates.
U.S. E-commerce Sales Data Analysis
The significant growth in U.S. e-commerce sales, reaching $1.1 trillion in 2023, despite a slowdown in growth rate post-pandemic surge, indicates a robust and expanding online retail channel. This sustained expansion of online retail presents a substantial opportunity for the Global Almond Market, as it facilitates direct-to-consumer sales, widens geographical reach, and enables efficient distribution of almond products (e.g., raw almonds, almond milk, almond flour) to a larger customer base, potentially bypassing traditional retail intermediaries and reducing market entry barriers for producers.
Growing Demand For Milk Alternatives
Milk alternatives are increasingly favored by consumers due to lactose intolerance, allergies, ethical considerations, environmental concerns, and changing dietary preferences toward plant-based and vegan lifestyles. Almond milk, among these alternatives, is a leading product recognized for its creamy texture, pleasant taste, and nutritional benefits such as being low in calories and high in vitamin E.
As an illustration, almond milk occupies a significant portion of the market segment attributed to vegan milk, and it has received significant growth in its popularity in Germany (18 percent market share) and the United States of America, where consumers are replacing traditional milk with plant-based milk products. Almond Board of California does a lot of marketing of health benefits and sustainability of almond milk which increases its popularity.
Consumers also prefer using almond milk because of its versatility since it is commonly used in smoothies, coffee, cereals, and baking thereby making people more dependent on its use. Such innovations in almond milk formulations that are found in organic and fortified forms, meet the current increased consumer demand in functional and premium products.
Plant Based Milk Sales By Type
The growing demand for milk alternatives presents a significant opportunity for the global almond market, as evidenced by almond milk dominating the plant-based milk sales, accounting for 55.8% of the market breakdown in the provided data. Despite recent fluctuations in sales growth for some plant-based milk types, almond milk's substantial market share indicates a strong consumer preference and established demand, positioning the global almond market to capitalize on the continued shift towards plant-based diets and milk alternatives.
Strict food safety regulations and aflatoxin testing
Strict food safety regulations and aflatoxin testing present significant restraints for the global almond market, impacting producers, exporters, and processors worldwide. Almonds are particularly susceptible to contamination by aflatoxins naturally occurring mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus molds under hot and humid conditions. Aflatoxin exposure is a public health concern, as it is linked to liver cancer and other serious health risks, prompting stringent regulatory actions in major consuming regions.
European Union is now one of the stringent aflatoxin contaminants on edible nuts in the world with tolerance levels of total aflatoxin in almonds being at a low of 10 micrograms per kilogram and less still on aflatoxin B1. Strict testing procedures are also applied in countries like Japan and China and testing results that show traces that are above the stipulated limit may be rejected or destroyed. A new voluntary aflatoxin pre-test program of U.S almonds to Japan was established by the USDA and the Ministry of Health in Japan in 2025 and had the intention of keeping the level of rejections of imports and food safety scandals to the bare minimum.
The American importer of approximately 77 percent of worldly almonds needs advanced food safety practices as mandated by Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). It is the law that all raw almonds to be utilized not only in the country but also outside the country should be pasteurized or treated in order to lower the chances of microbial contamination. To ensure U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and foreign requirements, producers must have their food undergo intensive record-keeping, traceability, and aflatoxin tests conducted in batch-wise techniques that use advanced detection systems. Failure to comply may incur costly recent call-backs, intrusion in trade as well as garnishment of publicity.
Trade barriers and tariff volatility
Trade barriers and tariff volatility remain significant restraints on the global almond market, affecting pricing, supply chains, and export dynamics. In 2025, the global almond industry confronted escalating tariffs from key markets including China, the European Union, and the United States, disrupting long-established trade routes and altering global almond flows. For example, China imposed an 84% tariff on U.S. almonds in response to trade tensions, drastically reducing U.S. almond exports to China by nearly 49% in early 2025. This forced Chinese buyers to shift sourcing towards Australia's almonds, which recorded a 128% increase in shipments to China during the same period.
The United States supplies approximately 77% of the world's almonds, and any trade disruptions directly impact its almond producers. The tariff measures have led to an oversupply in the domestic market, driving down prices substantially. In February 2025, only 577 million pounds of U.S. almonds were committed for export, an 8.5% decline compared to the previous year. In the meantime, EU tariffs on American almonds and soybeans added another wrinkle to the trading scene where America, in its turn, imposed higher tariffs on the European products, further confusing the exporters.
In addition, uncertainty in tariffs generates uncertainty in the market, hence buyers are likely to favor shorter agreement and to have multiple suppliers at the expense of long-term relations between buyers and sellers. This uncertainty is further caused by the variables in freight charges and the currency exchange rates. As an example, tariff penalties on U.S. almonds provided a market demand in Spain and Australia in the EU, and by contrast, inciting tariff relieving actions in India could increase the market demand there between 50-70m pounds, which demonstrates this inequitable widespread effect.
The smaller countries of almond production have a specific disadvantage as the price shocks instigated by tariffs can even be compensated through subsidies. According to industry stakeholders, more cooperation was needed in terms of global trade negotiations that would result in a reduction of all the negative impacts and bring about balanced growth.
High Production Costs
Almond cultivation is capital-intensive due to multiple factors, including water usage, labor, pest control, equipment, and energy expenses. For example, in California the world’s largest almond producer alone costs range from $500 to over $1,000 per acre and total production cost is $2,000-$3,500 annually, depending on the region and availability. Given almonds require substantial irrigation, especially during dry periods, rising water prices and drought conditions significantly inflate production expenses.
Labor costs have surged over recent years, driven by shortages of skilled agricultural workers and stricter labor regulations. This has resulted in increased wages and benefits, pushing up operational costs. Additionally, the need for pest management is critical for almonds but costly due to the reliance on specialized chemicals and integrated pest management techniques, which can fluctuate in price and availability.
Energy prices also impact production costs heavily. Between 2020 and 2025, electricity expenses for almond growers in California increased by over 50%, making irrigation, processing, and transportation more expensive. Similarly, machinery and packaging costs have been rising due to global supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures.
Economic reports note that these rising costs have squeezed growers’ profit margins. A University of California, Davis study highlighted that between 2019 and 2024, operating costs for almond growers increased by about 38-40%, while gross returns fell by 36%. This discrepancy led to a significant decline in net returns, prompting some growers to reduce acreage or abandon orchards altogether.
Outside the U.S., countries like Spain face challenges with weather variability increasing management costs, while in Australia, replanting almond orchards can cost up to AUD 75,000 per hectare, a high financial barrier for producers.
Competition from other nuts
Competition from other nuts is a significant challenge for the global almond market, as consumers and manufacturers increasingly explore diverse nut varieties for nutrition, flavor, and application versatility. The global nut market is highly fragmented, featuring almonds alongside walnuts, cashews, pistachios, hazelnuts, macadamias, and pecans. Each nut type is competing for shelf space, consumer attention, and share in burgeoning sectors like snacks, bakery, dairy alternatives, and nutrition bars.
While almonds hold the largest segment share due to their nutritional profile and wide applications, other nuts have established strong positioning by leveraging flavor profiles, unique health benefits, and price competitiveness. For instance, cashews and pistachios enjoy popularity for their creaminess and taste, often preferred in premium nut butters and snacks. Walnuts are known as omega-3 fatty acids appealing to health conscious consumers of heart products whereas hazelnuts prevail in the confectionary and chocolate industry.
The increasing consumer trend towards selection and exotic flavors motivates individuals to learn more about using other varieties of nuts in addition to almonds, a situation that has increased competitiveness. There is also regional flavor; pistachios and cashews are popular in some parts of Asia and the Middle East, whereas almonds are popular in North America and Europe.
In addition, the overall prices and commodities relative prices and affordability are affected by production cost changes in almond compared against other nuts that affect consumer purchases and supply sourcing decisions by manufacturers. To provide an illustration, the snacks market entailing cost as a factor may switch to the less expensive nuts in times when the price of almonds is high.
The manufacturing and retail sites react to competition through product differentiation by innovating almond products, differentiation is however affected by continuous competition, which puts prices, marketing and innovations investments at pressure. It has been reported that almonds are experiencing increased competition particularly in the plant-based dairy alternative industry where almond, oat, soy, and coconut milk are competing with each other.
Consumer Education and Perception
Almond prices are affected by a complex interplay of factors including weather disruptions, water availability, global supply-demand shifts, trade policy changes, and currency fluctuations. California, accounting for about 80% of global almond production, plays a pivotal role in setting international price trends. For instance, drought conditions in recent years have contributed to crop yield reductions and uncertainties around future supply, which in turn drive price spikes.
Statistical data highlights this volatility: the Producer Price Index (PPI) for almonds in the U.S. reached 357.3 in April 2025, a rise from 288.4 in 2020 but still well below its 2014 peak of 463.6, underscoring significant multi-year swings in producer returns. During the same period, the USDA’s farm price for almonds increased by 24.4% from 2023 to 2024, reflecting tightening supply following reduced acreage and lower crop yields due to water scarcity. However, global pricing can quickly fall if bumper harvests lead to oversupply, as observed in earlier years when market expansion outpaced demand and drove prices below $2/lb.
Demand fluctuations in key export regions also contribute to volatility. In 2025, almond exports from California to China/Hong Kong dropped by 62% year-over-year, while exports to India and Europe saw smaller but still notable declines. Factors such as trade tensions, economic slowdowns, and shifting consumer preferences lead to erratic shipment volumes and sharp price adjustments, impacting supply chain stability.
Wholesale almond prices in 2024 illustrated this unpredictability, ranging from $2.16/kg at the low end up to $17.13/kg at the high end depending on region, season, and grade. Moreover, geopolitical developments such as shifts in U.S. administration trade policy or Middle East instability can cause additional, sudden disruptions in almond shipment flows, further amplifying price swings.
California Almond Acreage Data (2016-2025)
Weather events like droughts in major producing regions (e.g., California) and unexpected conditions during critical periods like bloom can severely impact yields, leading to supply shortages and subsequent price spikes, or conversely, oversupply from bumper crops can drive prices down to levels that strain growers' profitability. Furthermore, geopolitical factors, trade policies, and tariffs can disrupt export markets and influence pricing dynamics, creating unpredictable fluctuations that affect farmers' incomes and the stability of the entire supply chain.
COVID-19 profoundly transformed global consumer goods markets, rapidly altering buying patterns, supply chains, and retail formats. Lockdowns and restrictions forced consumers to reprioritize spending, leading to worldwide spikes in demand for essential goods such as packaged foods, hygiene products, and household supplies, while non-essential categories including luxury and discretionary items declined sharply. For instance, during the UK’s first major lockdown, supermarket sales surged by over 43% in the week ending March 21, 2020, with British shoppers making an extra 79 million shopping trips compared to the previous year. Across Europe, sales of basic goods like pasta and soap often left store shelves empty.
The trend was repeated the world over: in North America, shoppers hoarded dry grocery and household care items, with most trying to fill two-week stockpile gaps. In Asia, online sales of canned food exceeded 268 percent in a week in South Korea and Chinese and Hong Kong shoppers were out of bleach, cleaning wipes and paper products. Such changes were driven by panic buying and long term changes since households adapted to working remotely, cooking at home, and spending more time indoors.
E-commerce became superior retailing channel where online savvy retailers surpassed others who had conspicuous poor online presence. The pandemic also escalated downtrading tendencies; due to the constant pressure on the economy, consumers resorted to cheaper brands or private labels but as the first preferences, there were household brands.
The impact of COVID-19 on the market in general and the almond industry in particular was the same in a widespread consumer goods market. As agricultural export activity was hit by supply chain disruptions, the export of almonds experienced some delays and logistic issues, although sales to retailers remained fairly healthy in key countries, such as the US and India, due to demand in healthy shelf-stable snacks.
Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.
Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.
Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
