Additionally, according to the BrightFocus Foundation fact sheet, 11 million people in the US has some form of age-related macular degeneration and it is expected to get double to nearly 22 million by 2050. Furthermore, BrightFocus Foundation reported that the estimated cost of visual loss due to ARMD in the US, Cuba, and Canada collectively is approximately USD 98 billion. The increasing spending on vision impairment treatment drives market growth.

Market Restraints

Irrespective of innovative technology for the eye treatment artificial retina has some postoperative complications. Artificial retina involves the surgical process in which an electronic chip is implanted on the retina which causes eye problems. Post-operative complications include inflammation of intraocular fluids, conjunctival erosion, infection to the retina, and stimulation of nearby nerve cells as a side-effect. Additionally, patients suffering from glaucoma disease are not suitable for this product as it requires normal functioning optic nerve cells to receive signals.

Some of the other issues with electrical stimulation of the retina are that the electrodes need to be as small as possible only to stimulate a few nerve cells. These types of problems may lead to poor resolution and hamper market growth.
