Influenza is an infection of the upper airway caused by an influenza virus, which is commonly known as flu. The most common symptoms include high fever, sore throat, headache, coughing, and sneezing. Influenza is a highly infectious respiratory disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza has resulted in between 9.3 million to 49.0 million cases of illnesses. It is estimated that 30% of the burden of communicable diseases in Europe is due to influenza. Up to 50 million people each year are estimated to have symptomatic influenza in EU (European Union)/EEA (the European Economic Area (EEA) countries, and therefore between 15,000 and 70,000 people are estimated to die from influenza-associated causes. According to the World Health Organization Report 2017, the influenza virus is continuously growing in the South-East Asia region. Globally, 91% of the population were diagnosed with the influenza A virus, out of which 9% were associated with the influenza B virus. The worst flu outbreak on record occurred in 2015, during which 7,10,000 US citizens were hospitalized due to swine flu with a death toll of 56,000 citizens. This surge in influenza epidemics rises the demand for influenza vaccines, thereby contributing to the growth of the market.
The number of clinical trials for influenza vaccine continues to grow worldwide. According to the Clinical Trials Database, around 112 clinical trials for influenza vaccine were reported in the UK in 2018. In May 2018, NIAID launched a Phase 2 clinical trial of a universal influenza vaccine called M-001. The vaccine, which was developed and produced by BiondVax Pharmaceuticals based in Ness Ziona, Israel, contains antigenic peptide sequences shared among many different influenza strains.

The development of such types of vaccines would eliminate the need to update and administer the seasonal flu vaccine each year and could protect against newly emerging flu strains. For instance, NIAID researchers designed an experimental vaccine featuring the protein ferritin, which can self-assemble into microscopic pieces called nanoparticles, as a key component. The vaccine showed promising results in animal testing and is being evaluated for future trials in humans.
According to CDC’s weekly FluView report, there were about 2.5% visits to health care providers per week for Influenza like Illness (ILI) in the first week of November 2019. Moreover, rising government support in the Americas is creating demand for influenza vaccination.
