Cross-linking the PE to form XLPE increases the temperature range of the insulation whilst maintaining the electrical properties. XLPE cables are generally used in 600V to 155kV transmission lines. However, nowadays, in 6kV-35kV transmission lines, their main function is that of power transmission.
Such cables can be used for low, medium, and high voltage applications. They provide better insulation value, better current capacity, have lesser bending radii, and are lighter in weight. The cables are selected depending on the application. They have less chances of mechanical damage and can be used for underground applications with armoring and MDPE outer sheathing.
