Diesel engine catalysts has a honeycomb-like structure, made of precious metal such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The exhaust gases flow through the structure, while the precious metal coatings cause a catalytic reaction to convert the pollutants into less harmful substances.

Analytical insights on Diesel Engine Catalyst Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Diesel Engine Catalyst Market market is projected to reach $10.16B by 2025, growing at 7.1% CAGR. The Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) segment holds the largest share.
The global market for diesel engine catalysts is growing steadily due to stringent air quality regulations and penalties imposed on automotive OEMs and demand for commercial vehicles. However, the growth of the market may be hindered by the increase in the number of BEVs.
The conventional gasoline fuel vehicles emit a number of harmful gasses, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), CO, NOx, and HC, which affect human health, causing asthma, bronchitis, and other ailments. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, up to 30,000 premature deaths are caused due to vehicle emissions, each year. Thus, governments all over the world are working on stringent air quality regulations to control vehicle emissions. For instance, the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) in China is working on introducing regulations pertaining to emission control.
The European Union (EU) introduced the Euro 6 standard in September 2015, with the aim to reduce harmful car and van exhaust emission levels in both petrol and diesel cars. This standard is for controlling the emission of gasses such as NOx, CO, HC (THC and NMHC), and PM, which are basically soot from diesel cars. Additionally, the EU developed the Real-Driving Emissions (RDE) test procedure, applicable from 1 September 2017. This test better reflects the actual emissions on the road and reduces the discrepancy between emissions measured in real driving to those measured in a laboratory. The procedure uses portable on-board emission analysers to measure emissions during a realistic, on-road test to check and control the emission levels. India developed the National Auto Policy Draft 2018 to define corporate average emission targets for passenger vehicle manufacturers, 2020 onwards. Economic penalties were also introduced for manufacturers that do not meet the average targets.
Besides the regulations, the governments are working on imposing penalties on automotive OEMs. For instance, in India, according to the Indian government in April 2017, Volkswagen recalled about 275 thousand vehicles for software update and repair after the test conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).This was a result of tests revealing five to nine times higher real world emissions of NOx from the concerned Volkswagen engine series than the approved levels.
The diesel engine catalyst oxidizes the CO, hydrocarbons, and aldehydes contained in diesel exhaust to release non-toxic compounds of CO2 and water vapor. Thus, the stringent air quality regulations and penalties imposed on automotive OEMs are expected to drive the growth of global diesel engine catalyst market during the forecast period.
The growth of diesel engine catalysts is attributed to the increasing sale of diesel engine vehicles due to the need for minimizing CO, NOx, HC, and PM emissions. Thus, the impact of the stringent air quality regulations and penalties imposed on automotive OEMs on the global diesel engine catalyst market is expected to shift from moderate to high over the forecast period.
The companies developing and manufacturing diesel engine catalysts are investing in the improvement of diesel engine catalyst to achieve maximum conversion efficiency at operational temperature and decrease the impact of vehicular emission on the environment. For instance, Johnson Matthey Inc., a leading automotive catalyst producer, is developing an advanced three-way catalyst, which is expected to improve fuel efficiency. Furthermore, it is expected to reduce CO2 emission substantially at a low emission temperature and achieve 100% conversion efficiency at high operational temperature, typically above 400°C. A few diesel engine catalyst companies are working on the development of new filter substrate technologies and diesel engine catalyst filters. BASF, Clean Diesel Technologies, and other companies offer highly efficient and innovative mobile emission catalysts to enable clean air for a healthier environment. BASF is investing in a new production facility for mobile emission catalysts at its Pudong site in Shanghai, China, to manufacture innovative catalysts for gasoline and diesel vehicles. Such investments in diesel engine catalyst innovation are anticipated to provide future growth opportunities to the global diesel engine catalyst market players.
The increase in demand for fuel-efficient, high-performance, and low-emission vehicles combined with the reduction in vehicular emission due to stringent rules and regulations in several countries increase the demand for BEVs. The demand is also attributed to the development of public charging infrastructure in China, France, Norway, and the other developed countries. The below graph depicts the increase in the number of on-road BEVs by 691.67% between 2013 and 2017.
The increase in the number of BEVs, hampers the demand for diesel engine catalysts, which are seldom used in BEVs.
However, the demand for hybrid electric vehicles and other BEV substitutes, which involve the use of diesel engine catalysts increases the impact of the increase in the number of BEVs. Therefore, the impact of increase in the number of BEVs on the global diesel engine catalyst market is expected shift from low to moderate over the forecast period.
The manufacturing of diesel engine catalysts primarily requires raw materials such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The uneconomical mining depths and the depleting reserves at existing mines are the factors behind the continuously increasing prices of precious metals. The below graph depicts the increase in rhodium prices by 217.39% between 2016 and 2018.
More than 70% of platinum and other precious metals is produced in Africa. The decrease in production at facilities in Zimbabwe and other African countries, weak infrastructure, and labour strikes over wage disputes are the factors primarily affecting the production of materials. This hampers the supply of platinum, palladium, and rhodium and increases the prices of such materials in the global market.
Materials such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium are widely used in manufacturing diesel engine catalysts. Therefore, the high raw materials prices are expected to challenge the global diesel engine catalyst market players during the forecast period.
Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.
Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.
Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
