Therefore, the growing development of low-VOC and eco-friendly products is expected to create market expansion opportunities for the global organic pigments market.

Market Restraints

Organic pigments are more expensive than the market's standard inorganic color pigments. This price difference might be attributed to enhanced pigment properties and greater production costs. During the forecast period, this pricing gap is expected to have a negative influence on the market for organic pigments. Organic pigments, particularly synthetic organic pigments, are more expensive to manufacture. Synthetic pigments need extensive chemical processing, increasing the cost by volume. The rising expense of raw materials, along with the rising cost of creating and transporting organic pigments, resulted in the creation of costly end-products. The overall chemical manufacturing process can be thought of in stages, beginning with the chemical synthetic sequence in which the pigment is formed, followed by a conditioning stage in which the crude product thus obtained is modified to optimize its performance properties, and finally finishing with the product being processed into a form, or preparation, that is suitable for its intended applications. Furthermore, because organic pigments are made in lower quantities, economies of scale cannot be realized in the production process, raising the price of organic pigments. These pigments are expensive since they are the result of extensive R&D and require high-quality raw ingredients. Because of the current shift in customer preferences towards bio-based products and increased knowledge of the hazardous effects of pigments, bio-based pigments are in great demand. This tendency of preference for bio-based products is expected to persist in future. Several attempts have been launched by firms to produce environmentally friendly and superior products, resulting in a price increase. The massive R&D expense is also included in final prices and passed on to customers, resulting in market high prices.

The price of raw materials required to make organic pigments, such as petrochemicals, can be variable. This can have an impact on the cost of organic pigments, making them less appealing to purchasers. Toluene, benzene, xylene, ethylene, and naphthalene are the key chemicals utilized in the manufacture process of organic pigments utilizing synthetic organic chemistry. The petrochemical industry is a substantial derivative of hydrocarbons obtained mostly from crude oil and natural gas. As a result, changes in the pricing of petrochemicals in the sector might indirectly impact the input material prices for producing organic pigments due to the volatile price nature of the oil and natural gas market. This factor reduces the market attractiveness of organic pigments since pigment prices are projected to be higher compared to other low-cost options. Hence, high cost of production and volatile input material prices are expected to act as restraining factors for the global organic pigments market.

Market Challenges

Organic pigments created from organic chemistry are produced utilising the fundamental elements toluene, benzene, xylene, ethylene, and naphthalene. However, exposure to these petrochemical derivatives has been demonstrated to have a negative influence on health. Stumbling, sleepiness, fainting, irregular pulse, and death are all symptoms of exposure to these drugs. Exposure to benzene and ethylbenzene, in particular, has been related to an increased risk of leukaemia and haematological malignancies. Toluene and xylene are not carcinogenic, but they can have a negative impact on reproduction, especially when exposed for an extended period of time at low to high concentrations. The central nervous system is a prominent and sensitive target of xylene toxicity via inhalation and oral routes, according to studies in people and animals. Individual chemical exposure can cause neurological damage via parent chemical-induced alterations in neuronal membranes. Human exposure to VOCs is widespread and has been a source of worry due to their mutagenic, neurotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic potential. Exposure to high amounts of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) has been linked to a variety of negative health effects in nations such as the United States, India, and China. These chemicals are subject to severe regulations and limitations in industry due to their harmful influence on human health.

Organic pigments are subject to strict standards, particularly when it comes to food contact packaging materials. The Framework Directive 89/109/EEC regulates materials and objects designed to come in contact with food in the EU. Single Directives are issued under this Directive, such as those for Plastic Materials (90/128/EEC), Cellulose Films (83/229/EEC), Elastomers and Rubber (93/11/EEC), and others. The overall requirement of Directive 89/109/EEC is that the contents of every food contact material do not transfer to food in proportions that might damage human health. The Council of Europe issued Resolution AP (89) 1 specifying purity rules for colourants in plastic products designed to come in contact with foodstuffs. It implies that all colourants used in the creation of packaging inks must meet the criteria of Council of Europe Resolution AP (89).1. Furthermore, the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 includes a list of carcinogenic primary aromatic amines, together with their CAS numbers, that are formed by reductive cleavage of one or more azo groups present in azo dyes. These should not be utilised in the formulation of inks. The Japan Printing Ink Makers Association (JPIMA) produced a negative list that restricts the use of printing inks for food packaging in Japan. There is a positive list accessible in China, such as GB9685-2008. Practically, the Australian rule demands that the colourant product meet the purity standards of CoE Resolution AP (89)1 and that the additives be listed in rule (EU) No. 10/2011. Because of the durability and widespread circulation of these chemicals, strict regulatory restrictions have been established in various countries (including the United States and the European Union). These restrictions have been created largely to preserve the environment, rather than to only protect human health. The German Hazardous Substances Ordinance (Chemikalien-Verbotsverordnung) restricts the sale of items that exceed very low dioxin traces limits. Hence, the health hazards related to organic pigments input materials and strict regulations in the market is expected to pose as a challenge to the expansion of global organic pigments market.

Strategic Outlook and Future Directions

The pandemic impacted and completely interrupted the production of organic pigments, leading to restraint in the supply of organic pigments in the global market. Another factor impacted in the supply chain was the availability of raw material supply. With mobility restraints the raw material supply was reduced in the market impacting production prices, disrupting market functioning globally. However, with ease in lockdown restrictions in the second half of 2020 and in the year 2021, companies worked closely with the suppliers to manage the supply of raw materials proactively, to optimize supply capability to satisfy market demand at less-than-optimal production capacity. With supply and distributions systems also being interrupted, and not capable of functioning at complete potential the market saw a restraint in its growth. However, with the slowdown in the spread of the pandemic, and increasing ease of restrictions in various region, in late 2021, and 2022 manufacturers were able to restart production to full capacity to meet the rising demand from various applications of the organic pigments-based products. With the extensive use of organic pigments in various end-use industries, the producers increasingly focused on ramping up production to meet the ongoing demand. With increasing market significance of eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives, the market is expected to boom pushing the need for higher supply forward. The supply is expected to grow back to pre-covid levels gradually, while fulfilling consumer requirements. With the market relatively stabilizing in 2023, as producers start to realize production at full capacity and expand market production potentials, the market is expected to flourish during the forecast period. With increasingly diverse applications of organic pigments the market is expected to grow significantly in the near future.

The impact of the pandemic created restrictions on demand for end use industry of organic pigments. With an extensive range of applications of organic pigments ranging from the paints & coatings, printing ink, textile to others such as cosmetics industry, the demand of organic pigments depended on the significant impact of demand from consumers. The pandemic brought uncertainty in the market, leading to end use applications industry as well as consumers globally to cut down on consumptions, largely restricting to necessities.

With the initial lockdowns implemented in 2020, all end use industries saw a significant drop in productions due to the implemented restrictions, reducing demand for inputs such as organic pigments. With significant drop in demand from essential applications such as printing inks and paints & coatings, while the downfall of the textile industry due to complete halting of production activities due to the implemented lockdown significantly hampered demand for organic pigments, leading to a fall in market expansion during the pandemic period. Meanwhile, because of the substantial decline in demand during the pandemic, organic pigment companies curtailed their production capacities to compensate for the significant drop in demand. While the overall demand fell during 2020, with ease in lockdown and partial commencement of end use industry activities in late 2020, to 2021, the demand saw a gradual increase overtime. However, in 2022, with most end use industry resuming activities at full capacity the demand for organic pigments has increased significantly while supply for same is growing in the market. With the pandemic accelerating the significance of sustainability and shift to eco-friendly commodities in the global market, there has been a steady increase in demand for organic pigments in the market. During the forecast period, with market expansion and increasing use of organic pigments, the market is expected to grow noticeably.
