Competitive Landscape & Porter's Five Forces

Smart Window Market — Competitive Analysis

Threat of New Entrants

Currently, in the global smart window market, the threat of new entrants is low and is expected to remain the same during the forecast period. This can be primarily attributed to the highly capital-intensive nature of the industry. The technical expertise required to make the products is also significantly high. Furthermore, the demand for smart windows is expected to increase significantly in the commercial sector, which is expected to lead to an insufficient supply of components as the technology is constantly upgrading; this is further expected to increase the barriers for the new entrants in the market. Moreover, the rapidly changing demand from end users is another factor that limits the entry of new players in the global smart window market .

Intensity of Rivalry

The global smart window market is projected to register a moderate degree of rivalry, as the market is fragmented with the presence of some leading players as well as small and large glass component manufacturers. As the adoption of smart window is low at current stage, there is a lack of awareness among the end users regarding the product. This somewhat reduces the degree of rivalry. The competition among the smart window system integrators is largely based on the quality, assembly, and distribution of the smart windows. However, the major players such as Saint-Gobain, and Merck Group are planning to partner with glass component suppliers as a part of vertical integration strategy. Therefore, the overall intensity of rivalry is expected to be moderate in the global smart window market during the forecast period.

Threat of Substitute

Currently, there are no direct replacements for smart windows available in the market. However, the high price of the products is significantly hampering its adoption; therefore, with ongoing research and development, substitutes for smart windows are eventually expected to emerge in the market in the future. Advancements in control system technologies and upgraded software are factors that are leading smart windows to be popular in the market rapidly and gaining attraction. Therefore, the threat of substitutes is expected to be low in the global smart window market during the forecast period.

Bargaining Power of Suppliers

The bargaining power of supplier is estimated to be moderate, as there are limited number of suppliers present in the market that supply glass components for smart window market. The suppliers at present are not in direct contact with the buyers which also limits their bargain power as they have to contact the new system integrators. Also, the cost of manufacturing impact the margins of the suppliers adversely. Furthermore, the cost of switching is moderate. This has reduced the overall bargaining power of suppliers owing to the rapidly changing technology by system integrators.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

As the smart window market is still in nascent stage, the industry growth is expected to be high. This has resulted in increased competition between the system integrators as there are indirect alternatives of smart window available for the buyer to switch. Also, the buyers are price sensitive as most of the end users belong to the commercial and residential sectors, offices and museums. Moreover, the cost of procuring smart window for end users at this stage is moderate which limits the actual concentration of buyers in a region up to a certain extent. Therefore, the overall bargaining power of buyers is expected to be moderate during the forecast period.

Key Analytical Findings

The Smart Window Market market is projected to reach $9.08B by 2025, growing at 15.5% CAGR.

Market Drivers

Smart window glass is becoming an integral part of advanced vehicle design, especially, in cars, trains, boats and aircraft. The smart window technology assists in switching tints from dark to clear within 2 seconds by efficiently controlling the alignment of special nanoparticles inside the film. Smart window can be operated with the flip of a switch, and can even be control with a mobile application, or voice command. It aids in increasing safety and security, provides better sound insulation, and protects against harmful heat and ultraviolet (UV) rays. Smart windows installed in automobiles have the capability to block around 90% of infrared and 98% of UV rays, making the vehicles' cabins more comfortable. It prevents overheating of the cabin and fading of fabric, when the car is parked in sunlight. In case of breakage, the glass pieces would not shatter as the film holds the pieces together. Furthermore, smart window serves as an ideal solution to a number of requirements car showrooms may have, from car displays to product launches, it offers a wide array of potential solutions that could serve general or specific needs. For instance, by installing a panelled switchable wall in the showroom, salespeople are able to use it as a tool to aid the sales process. Smart window glass is also used at airports as it can automatically change its opaqueness, letting in different amounts of sunlight depending on the conditions and time of the day. The initial attraction was to keep travellers from overheating and save money on air-conditioning, but later it found many uses. For instance, in April 2018, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport outfitted one of its gates with a new type of glass that adjusts according to the sunlight. Furthermore, in October 2018, Changi Airport, one of the busiest in Asia, started using smart windows to improve the accuracy, efficiency and safety of cargo and luggage handling. Using its camera to see visual markers and labels on luggage and containers, the glasses project information like loading instructions on top of the user’s real-world view, shortening loading time by as much as 15 minutes

Market Opportunities

As the technology has developed, glass has now become the predominant facade material for solar energy solutions. In the solar energy industry, smart window technology can be used as a thinner cover glass for photovoltaic panels that are important for solar concentrators. Smart windows offer unrivalled control of solar glare and assist in reducing the thermal transmittance through a glass façade which directly reduces the associated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) costs. It can be automatically tuned to different levels of darkness allowing complete solar glare control. Smart window is expected to foster innovative building design while offering unprecedented environmental benefits and protection to building inhabitants. Thus, smart windows for solar solutions are expected to hit the market in the coming years

Market Restraints

Most of the prime vehicle manufacturers have started using smart windows in their vehicles owing to its various benefits. But other mid-scale vehicle manufacturers are restraining to deploy smart windows in their vehicles as the cost of glass is high, which in turn increases the overall price of the vehicle. Most of the smart windows typically encompass a video camera, augmented reality, microphone and a bar code scanner, which increases the overall price. Also, security concern is one of the factors hampering the growth of the market as the sensors used in smart windows can be used to track and record a variety of information about the user such as user location, photograph, and video images and audio recordings. Also, like other connected technologies, smart window can be linked to other interfaces, either locally or via the Internet, or through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other networks, which can raise security concerns. Most smart window products cost at least 50% more than their non-automated counterpart. Furthermore, lack of technical expertise and awareness about smart window technology can limit the growth of the market. However, the development of smart window is in its nascent stage and expected to undergo intensive technological and economic alterations over the forecast period

Strategic Outlook and Future Directions

Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.

Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.

Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
