Chemicals are applied for de-icing and preventing the formation of ice for a certain time period on the surface of the aircraft. For the process of de-icing, type 1 de-icing fluid is applied to aircraft surfaces to remove accumulated ice or snow. After the application of type I fluid, the type IV anti-icing fluid is sprayed on the aircraft which assists in preventing re-accumulation of snow or ice before take-off. Additionally, all airline operators must comply with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Clean Aircraft Concept, which restricts take-off with snow or ice accumulated on critical surfaces of an aircraft as it may decrease lift and lead to accidents.

COMPETITIVE OVERVIEW
The global aircraft de-icing market is characterized by the presence of many global and regional vendors. The market is highly competitive with all the players competing to gain market share. Intense competition, frequent changes in government policies, and aviation regulations are key factors that impact market growth. The vendors compete based on cost, product quality, reliability, and aftermarket services. It is crucial for the vendors to provide cost-efficient and high-quality aircraft anti-icing/de-icing products in order to survive and succeed in an intensely competitive market environment.
THREAT OF NEW ENTRANTS
The global aircraft de-icing market is expected to grow at a considerable rate during the forecast period. However, the capital-intensive nature of the market and the need for advanced technology could deter new players to a certain extent. Moreover, the market already has well-established players such as UTC, Clarient AG, The Dow Chemical Company, and Textron Inc. with a wide geographic reach. This makes it difficult for new entrants to achieve economies of scale, which the leading players already possess. Therefore, new entrants present a low threat to the major stakeholders in the market.
BARGAINING POWER OF SUPPLIERS
In this market, the suppliers include the providers of components such as hydraulic systems, pumping systems, and sprayers and raw materials such as glycerol, sodium/potassium acetate, and sodium/potassium phosphate. The components and raw materials are subject to stringent regulatory review and need to be certified suitable for aircraft and airport applications. Although supplier concentration in the market is high, due to these factors, there are a limited number of key suppliers in the market. Moreover, switching costs are moderate, resulting in an overall low bargaining power of suppliers in the market.
BARGAINING POWER OF BUYERS
The buyer concentration in the global aircraft de-icing market is high and the buyers include airlines, airport authorities, and aircraft OEMs. They are highly reliant on successful and established manufacturers of aircraft de-icers due to the high-end applications and need for reliable equipment and services, which increases switching costs. Hence, the bargaining power of buyers in the global aircraft de-icing market is projected to be low.
THREAT OF SUBSTITUTES
Aircraft de-icers and de-icing fluids are used for de-icing aircraft surfaces for safe take-offs and landings during winters. Presently, there are no substitutes for aircraft de-icers. Thus, the threat of substitutes in the market is expected to be low during the forecast period.
INTENSITY OF RIVALRY
There is intense competition among the existing players in the market with manufacturers investing heavily in the research and development of high-quality, advanced, and cost-effective aircraft de-icers and de-icing fluids. Moreover, due to the modernization and expansion of existing airports and need for safe take-off and landing operations in wintry weather conditions, the rivalry for market share is set to increase.
Furthermore, in an attempt to gain a competitive edge in the market, established players aim at enhancing their product offering through mergers & acquisitions. In June 2017, JBT Corporation (US) acquired Aircraft Maintenance Support Services Ltd (UK) to strengthen its position in the market and enhance its military offerings. Thus, the rivalry in the market is projected to be high during the review period.

Analytical insights on Aircraft De icing Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Aircraft De icing Market market is projected to reach $1.74B by 2025, growing at 5.7% CAGR.
The global aircraft de-icing market is growing rapidly due to an increase in air passenger traffic and subsequent demand for new aircraft, modernization and expansion of existing airports, and need for safe take-off and landing operations during wintry weather conditions. However, the growth of the market may be hindered by factors such as backlogs in aircraft deliveries and high costs of development and operation of de-icing.
Globally, air passenger traffic has been increasing at a significant pace over the past couple of years. Factors such as decreasing airfares, increasing disposable incomes, especially in developing countries, and higher living standards have influenced this growth. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air travel is likely to double by 2036. It also estimates that China is likely to surpass the US and become the largest aviation market, in terms of passenger traffic, in the world, by 2024. The US air passenger traffic is growing at a rate of 6.34% and while in China it is expanding at 5.69% for the forecast years 2019 to 2025.
The figure below shows the number of domestic and international aircraft passengers globally.
To cater to the rising number of passengers, there has been a corresponding increase in the demand for new aircraft. For instance, in 2017, in one of the biggest deals in the history of commercial aviation, Airbus signed a USD 50 billion contract with Indigo Partners (US) to deliver 430 aircraft. Airbus and Boeing booked net orders for 1,109 and 912 aircraft, respectively, in 2017. Furthermore, new airlines are being established in almost every region to tap into the considerable passenger base. For instance, in 2017, more than 70 new airlines were launched around the world.
The figure below represents the gross orders for aircraft of Airbus and Boeing from 2009 to 2018.
With the increasing demand for new aircraft there has been a significant increase in demand for aircraft safety systems such as de-icing systems, which include pneumatic boot systems and fluid freeze point depressant systems. In pneumatic boot systems, flexible rubber-like boots expand and contract on ice-prone areas of the aircraft. The fluid freeze point depressant system weeps de-icing fluids from the leading edges of the airfoils for de-icing/anti-icing.
Therefore, the increase in air passenger traffic and subsequent demand for new aircraft are expected to drive the growth of the global aircraft de-icing market during the forecast period.
When performed without adequate discharge controls in place, airport deicing operations can result in significant adverse impacts on environment which include low oxygen conditions in surface waters (chemical oxygen demand/biological oxygen demand); waterbody color, odor, and foam concerns; fish kill events; damaged aquatic communities or absence of aquatic life; drinking water source contamination (surface water); drinking water taste and odor issues; and groundwater contamination. Likewise, low-grade illness complaints; aesthetic impacts to surface waters, including foaming, noxious odors, and discoloration; and complaints of headaches and nausea by people exposed to de-icing stormwater odors are significant issues.
This has resulted in the increased need for eco-friendly de-icing fluids. In August 2009, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended that best available technology be installed at most large airports in the country, capable of collecting up to 60% of aircraft de-icing fluids and treating the collected fluids. The focus on environmentally friendly de-icing fluids has also led the NASA Ames Research Center to formulate a non-glycol-based freezing point depressant (FPD) fluid material that performs essentially the same as or superior to currently used glycol-based fluids but has minimum adverse effects on the environment.
Thus, the development of eco-friendly de-icing fluids presents lucrative growth opportunities to players in the global aircraft de-icing market.
The slow rate of production is a major issue faced by aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus. Currently, both companies have a production backlog that would take roughly 10 years to clear.
The manufacturing and assembly of aircraft safety systems such as de-icing are time-consuming due to the complicated design and development phase. Manufacturers are focused on this stage to ensure enhanced passenger safety and increased aircraft efficiency in order to cater to the stringent aviation regulations. This results in extended aircraft manufacturing periods and the creation of backlogs in the aircraft manufacturing industry, which is expected to hinder market growth.
Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.
Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.
Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.

Clariant is a mid-cap Swiss specialty chemical company that has spent a decade shrinking and upgrading itself. After selling Masterbatches (2020) and Pigments (2022) and exiting bioethanol (2023), it now runs three business units: Care Chemicals (54 % of 2025 sales), Catalysts (21 %) and Adsorbents & Additives (25 %). FY 2025 sales were CHF 3.915 billion with an EBITDA margin before exceptional items of 17.8 %, the third consecutive annual improvement. Its franchise rests on surfactant and ethoxylation chemistry for consumer and industrial formulators, a globally relevant independent process-catalyst business (CATOFIN propane dehydrogenation, syngas, ethylene and specialty catalysts), bentonite-based adsorbents with captive mines, and halogen-free flame retardants and waxes. SABIC holds 31.5 %, which anchors the register and limits free float. The investment debate turns on whether self-help can lift reported margins to the 19–21 % target by 2027 in a flat demand environment, and on a large, unresolved ethylene-cartel damages overhang. Discrepancy note: data aggregators (PitchBook, Morningstar) show 10 449 employees; the company's own year-end 2025 figure is 10 281 FTE. The company figure is used throughout. --- **What the company does.** Clariant develops, manufactures and sells specialty chemicals to formulators, industrial processors and chemical producers. It does not sell to consumers. The Integrated Report 2025 states that the Group mainly addresses consumer, industrial and chemical-process end markets and that, since January 2023, business is conducted through three business units. **Company's own description (paraphrased from 2025–2026 releases).** Clariant presents itself as a focused, sustainability-oriented specialty chemical company guided by the purpose "Greater chemistry – between people and planet", with strategy built on four pillars: customer focus, innovative chemistry, leadership in sustainability and people engagement. **Independent characterisation.** Clariant is a portfolio of three quite different economic models under one balance sheet: 1. Care Chemicals is a formulated-ingredient and surfactant business. A large share of volume is ethylene-oxide-derived chemistry (ethoxylates, polyethylene glycols, glucamides) sold into personal and home care, crop protection formulation, industrial applications, oil services, mining flotation and aircraft de-icing. Part of the industrial book is priced by formula against raw material indices, which stabilises unit margin but passes deflation through to the top line (visible in Q4 2025, when pricing fell 1 % for that reason). 2. Catalysts is a project-and-refill business. Revenue depends on new-build petrochemical plants (first fills) and on replacement cycles at existing customers, which stretch when customer utilisation is low. This produces lumpy quarters and high operating leverage. Catalysts had the highest BU margin in 2025 (20.8 % before exceptional items) on the lowest sales base in five years. 3. Adsorbents & Additives combines a mining-based minerals business (bentonite bleaching earths for edible oil and renewable-fuel purification, foundry additives, desiccants) with polymer additives (phosphorus flame retardants, waxes, stabilisers) exposed to construction, electronics, automotive and coatings. **Revenue model.** Essentially 100 % product sales. Service and licensing income exists but is not reported separately: technical service embedded in catalyst and oil-service contracts, the CLARITY digital catalyst-monitoring platform (over 220 customer plants and over 800 users in 38 countries at end-2025, per the FY 2025 release), and process-technology partnerships. There is no subscription revenue line. Product/service/licensing mix: not publicly disclosed. **Value-chain position.** Midstream. Clariant buys commodity feedstocks (ethylene oxide, fatty alcohols, natural oils, phosphorus derivatives, metals for catalysts, energy) and mines its own bentonite. It sells performance ingredients and catalysts where qualification, application know-how and regulatory approvals matter more than scale. **Customer types.** Consumer goods formulators, agrochemical companies, oil and gas operators, mining companies, airports and airlines, petrochemical and chemical producers, engineering and licensing partners, edible-oil and renewable-fuel refiners, foundries, plastics compounders, and coatings and adhesives producers. **End-market mix.** The Integrated Report 2024 gives chemical-process end markets as 21 % of 2024 sales.
