Alkyd resins are oil-modified polyester resins produced by the polycondensation of polyhydric alcohols (polyols), polybasic acids or their anhydrides, and monobasic fatty acids or triglyceride oils. Typical polyols include glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane and neopentyl glycol; the most widely used acid component is phthalic anhydride, supplemented by isophthalic acid, maleic anhydride and, in some grades, benzoic acid as a chain stopper. The fatty acid component is sourced from vegetable and other renewable oils such as soybean, linseed, sunflower, tall oil fatty acid (TOFA), dehydrated castor, coconut and palm-kernel oil. Commercial production is carried out in batch reactors at roughly 200–260 °C using either the alcoholysis (monoglyceride) route or the fatty acid route, with fusion or solvent (azeotropic) processing.
The properties of an alkyd are governed principally by its oil length, defined as the weight percentage of oil or fatty acid in the finished resin, and by the degree of unsaturation of that oil. Alkyds built on drying or semi-drying oils cure at ambient temperature through autoxidative cross-linking catalysed by metal driers, while short oil and non-drying grades are cured by heat in combination with amino resins or are used as plasticising resins. This versatility, combined with good pigment wetting, gloss, brushability and a high share of renewable raw materials, has made alkyds one of the largest and longest-established classes of coating binders.
For the purpose of this study, the market covers the value of alkyd resins sold or transferred for use as binders in coatings, printing inks and allied applications, segmented by oil length (Long Oil, Medium Oil and Short Oil) and by application (Architectural Coatings, Industrial Coatings, and Printing Inks & Others).
Included: solvent-borne alkyds, high-solids alkyds, waterborne alkyd emulsions and water-reducible alkyds; modified alkyds supplied as resins, including urethane-modified (uralkyds), styrenated, acrylic-modified, silicone-modified and phenolic-modified alkyds; air-drying and stoving (baking) grades; resins produced by merchant suppliers as well as by integrated coating and ink manufacturers.
Excluded: oil-free (saturated) polyester resins, unsaturated polyester resins, epoxy esters supplied as a separate resin class, the value of finished paints, inks and varnishes, and additives such as driers, anti-skinning agents and solvents sold separately from the resin.

On the supply side, respondents included business heads, product managers, technical service managers and sales executives at alkyd resin manufacturers, along with procurement and market specialists at suppliers of vegetable oils, fatty acids, phthalic anhydride and polyols. On the demand side, respondents included formulation chemists, procurement managers and business development executives at architectural, industrial and protective coating manufacturers and printing ink producers, as well as distributors of coating resins.
The objectives of primary research were to verify market size and segment splits, understand pricing and margin structures, assess the pace of substitution by waterborne acrylic and other binder technologies, gauge the commercial uptake of waterborne, high-solids and bio-based alkyds, and obtain views on regional demand outlooks and capacity developments.
Market Size Estimation
Market size was estimated using both top-down and bottom-up approaches so that each could act as a check on the other.
Top-down approach: the global coating resins and printing ink binder markets were taken as the starting point. The share of alkyd resins within each end-use market was estimated from industry data and expert input, and the resulting value was then allocated across oil-length classes, applications, regions and countries using consumption patterns, trade data and coatings output by country.
Bottom-up approach: alkyd consumption was built up at the country level from the output of architectural paints, industrial coatings and printing inks, applying alkyd binder content by product type and average resin prices. Supply-side estimates of the alkyd resin revenues of leading producers and the installed capacity of regional producers were used as a further cross-check.
Data triangulation: estimates from the two approaches were reconciled, and residual differences were resolved by reference to trade statistics, company disclosures and primary interviews. Final figures were validated with industry experts before the forecast stage.
Forecasting Methodology
Forecasts were developed for each segment, region and country by combining statistical trend analysis with an assessment of the factors expected to influence demand over 2026–2032. The model links alkyd demand to its downstream end markets and adjusts for technology substitution and price developments.
Construction output, residential renovation and infrastructure spending, which drive architectural and protective coatings demand.
Industrial production, machinery, agricultural and transport equipment output and metal fabrication, which drive industrial coatings demand.
Printing and packaging output, which drives demand for alkyds in offset and other printing inks.
The pace of substitution by waterborne acrylics, polyurethanes and other binder systems, and the adoption of waterborne and high-solids alkyds.
Regulatory developments affecting VOC content, driers and anti-skinning agents.
Expected trends in vegetable oil, phthalic anhydride and polyol prices and their pass-through into resin prices.
Macroeconomic indicators including GDP growth, urbanisation and per-capita paint consumption.
Base Year, Forecast Period and Currency
The base year for the study is 2025. Historic data are presented for 2022, 2023 and 2024, and the forecast period covers 2026–2032. Compound annual growth rates (CAGR) are calculated over the period 2026–2032. All values are expressed in USD Million at current prices; values originally reported in other currencies were converted using average annual exchange rates for the respective year.
Assumptions and Limitations
The macroeconomic environment is assumed to remain broadly stable over the forecast period, without a prolonged global recession or a major disruption to construction or industrial activity.
Regulatory trends on VOC emissions and chemical safety are assumed to continue on their current trajectory, without sudden bans that would make alkyd technology non-compliant in its core applications.
Vegetable oil and petrochemical feedstock prices are assumed to fluctuate within historically observed ranges; extreme commodity shocks could alter value growth.
Captive alkyd production by integrated coating manufacturers is valued on an equivalent merchant-price basis, which involves estimation.
Limited public disclosure by privately held and regional producers means that some supply-side estimates rely on primary research and modelling.
Exchange rate movements may affect the reported USD value of markets where pricing is denominated in local currencies.

Analytical insights on Alkyd Resin Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Alkyd Resin Market market is projected to reach $1.21B by 2032, growing at 6.3% CAGR. The Long Oil segment holds the largest share.
The Global Alkyd Resin Market is a mature but steadily expanding market. Its value is projected to rise from USD 824.98 Million in 2025 to USD 1,213.25 Million in 2032, at a CAGR of 5.54% over 2026–2032. Growth is underpinned by construction and industrial activity in emerging economies, the cost-effectiveness and renewable raw material base of alkyd chemistry, and continued innovation in waterborne and high-solids formulations. At the same time, the market faces structural pressure from VOC regulation and substitution by waterborne acrylic and other binder technologies, particularly in the architectural segments of North America and Europe.
Construction and Renovation Activity in Emerging Economies
Architectural coatings are the largest outlet for alkyd resins, accounting for USD 412.49 Million, or 50.00% of global demand in 2025. In emerging economies, solvent-borne alkyd enamels, primers and wood finishes remain the default choice for doors, windows, grilles, railings and furniture because they offer high gloss, good flow and penetration, and tolerance of imperfect surface preparation at a low cost per square metre. Rapid urbanisation, government housing programmes such as India's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, large-scale real estate and tourism projects in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and expanding middle-class housing in Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America are increasing both new-build and repaint demand. Asia Pacific alone accounted for USD 428.99 Million in 2025, and India is the fastest-growing country market at a CAGR of 8.29%. As per-capita paint consumption in these markets converges toward developed-market levels, alkyd volumes are expected to rise even as the technology mix gradually shifts.
Infrastructure and Industrial Investment
Industrial Coatings are the fastest-growing application, with a CAGR of 6.21% over 2026–2032. Alkyd and modified-alkyd systems are widely used in general industrial finishes, agricultural and construction machinery, metal fabrication, steel structures, rail wagons, containers and light protective coatings, where their fast drying, good adhesion and ease of application provide an economical solution. Public infrastructure programmes are a key support: the U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, India's sustained increases in public capital expenditure on roads, railways and urban infrastructure, and China's continued investment in manufacturing capacity all raise demand for structural steel and equipment that require primers and topcoats. Growth in agricultural mechanisation and in small- and medium-sized metal fabrication in Asia Pacific, Latin America and Africa further supports medium and short oil alkyd consumption in industrial applications.
Renewable Raw Material Base and Cost-Performance Advantage
Alkyds are among the most bio-based binders used in coatings, as a large share of their mass is derived from vegetable oils and fatty acids; long oil grades often contain more than half renewable content by weight, and resins using bio-based polyols or rosin can exceed this. As paint and ink manufacturers set targets for renewable carbon content and carbon footprint reduction, alkyds offer a mature, scalable route to higher bio-based content without the cost premium associated with many newer bio-based chemistries. Programmes such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's BioPreferred programme and growing use of product carbon footprint data in procurement reinforce this advantage. Combined with relatively simple manufacturing, broad compatibility with pigments and additives, and a low price per unit of film performance, this positions alkyds as a preferred binder for cost-sensitive segments and for brand owners seeking credible sustainability claims.
Technological Advances in Waterborne and High-Solids Alkyds
Technology development has extended the life of alkyd chemistry in regulated markets. Waterborne alkyd emulsions and water-reducible alkyds deliver the flow, gloss and wood-penetration characteristics of conventional alkyds at VOC levels compatible with European and North American architectural limits, while high-solids alkyds reduce solvent content in industrial applications. Hybrid alkyd-acrylic dispersions and urethane-modified alkyds improve drying speed, hardness development and durability. Major resin producers have introduced bio-based waterborne alkyd emulsions for trim and joinery paints, and the development of cobalt-free drier packages has made it possible to reformulate alkyd paints in response to regulatory scrutiny of cobalt salts. These advances allow alkyds to defend their position in premium trim, wood and metal applications, and are a key reason the short and medium oil segments are expected to grow faster than the market average.
Bio-Based and Circular Alkyd Resins
Rising demand for renewable and recycled content creates an opportunity for producers to differentiate through alkyds based on bio-based polyols, rosin, bio-based succinic or other acids, and glycolysed recycled PET, which can replace part of the phthalic anhydride and glycol component. Mass-balance certification and third-party verified renewable content allow suppliers to command premiums with paint makers that have public sustainability targets.
High-Performance Waterborne and Cobalt-Free Systems
Regulatory pressure on VOCs, cobalt driers and certain anti-skinning agents creates demand for next-generation alkyd systems that combine low VOC with fast drying and durability. Suppliers that can offer complete solutions, including waterborne alkyd emulsions, alkyd-acrylic hybrids and resins pre-optimised for cobalt-free drier packages, can win share in North American and European trim, joinery and light industrial markets where conventional alkyds are being displaced.
Capacity Localisation in High-Growth Markets
The Middle East & Africa (6.94% CAGR), Latin America (6.19%) and Asia Pacific (5.90%) are growing faster than the global average. Local production of alkyds close to customers in India, Southeast Asia, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Africa and Brazil reduces logistics costs, supports industrial diversification policies and provides a hedge against currency volatility, creating opportunities for capacity investment, joint ventures and toll-manufacturing arrangements.
VOC Regulation and Substitution by Waterborne Binders
Conventional solvent-borne alkyds typically contain significant volumes of aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents. Regulations such as the EU Paints Directive (2004/42/EC), the U.S. national VOC standards for architectural coatings, California Air Resources Board and South Coast Air Quality Management District rules, and Canada's VOC Concentration Limits for Architectural Coatings Regulations have progressively lowered permitted VOC levels. In response, many interior and exterior wall paints and an increasing share of trim paints have moved to waterborne acrylic and acrylic-hybrid technology. This substitution is the primary reason why North America and Europe are the slowest-growing regions, at CAGRs of 4.29% and 4.18% respectively.
Raw Material Price Volatility
Alkyd economics depend on two volatile raw material complexes: vegetable oils and fatty acids, whose prices are driven by crop yields, biofuel mandates and trade flows, and petrochemical intermediates such as phthalic anhydride (derived from ortho-xylene) and pentaerythritol. Edible oil prices reached record levels in 2021–2022, compounded by disruption to sunflower oil supply from the Black Sea region, and renewable diesel demand continues to absorb soybean oil in the Americas. Such swings compress resin producers' margins when pass-through is delayed, and can make alternative binders temporarily more competitive.
Inherent Performance Limitations
Alkyd films can yellow over time, particularly in interior and low-light conditions, and are prone to embrittlement on ageing. Their ester linkages make them susceptible to saponification on alkaline substrates such as fresh concrete and masonry, and their exterior gloss and colour retention are inferior to acrylic, polyurethane and polysiloxane systems. Ambient-cure alkyds also dry more slowly than many competing technologies. These limitations restrict alkyds in high-performance protective and premium decorative applications.
Shift Toward Low-VOC Alkyd Technologies
Across all regions, producers are reallocating development resources toward waterborne alkyd emulsions, high-solids resins and alkyd-acrylic hybrids. In Asia Pacific and the Middle East, regulation is tightening more gradually, but multinational paint companies are increasingly harmonising product ranges toward lower-VOC formulations.
Drier and Additive Regulation
Cobalt carboxylates, the most effective driers for air-drying alkyds, and methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO), a widely used anti-skinning agent, have come under regulatory scrutiny in Europe. Reformulation with manganese, iron or zirconium-based drier systems and alternative anti-skinning agents is both a technical challenge and a source of differentiation for resin suppliers that design resins to perform with these systems.
Backward Integration and Consolidation
Large decorative paint companies in Asia and Latin America produce a significant portion of their alkyd requirements in-house, limiting the addressable merchant market, while consolidation among global resin suppliers has concentrated technology and scale. Merchant producers must compete on technical service, specialty grades and supply reliability.
Structural Change in Printing Inks
Demand for alkyds in publication offset inks is under pressure from the long-term decline of print media, while packaging, labels and commercial printing remain more resilient. Ink makers are also shifting toward vegetable-oil-based and energy-curable systems, requiring alkyd suppliers to adapt grades for packaging and sheet-fed applications.
The alkyd resin value chain links agricultural and petrochemical raw material producers with formulators of coatings and inks and, ultimately, with construction, industrial and printing end users. Value addition is concentrated at the resin manufacturing and formulation stages, where technical know-how and customer service differentiate suppliers.
Raw materials and inputs: vegetable oils and fatty acids (soybean, linseed, sunflower, tall oil fatty acid, castor, coconut and palm-kernel oil) supplied by oilseed crushers and oleochemical producers; polyols (glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane, neopentyl glycol); acids and anhydrides (phthalic anhydride, isophthalic acid, maleic anhydride, benzoic acid) from petrochemical producers; and solvents, neutralising agents and emulsifiers.
Resin manufacturing: merchant resin producers and integrated paint and ink companies convert these inputs in batch reactors into solvent-borne, high-solids or waterborne alkyds and modified alkyds. Key value drivers are formulation expertise, process control of viscosity and acid value, raw material procurement and plant utilisation.
Distribution and channels: large paint and ink manufacturers purchase directly from resin producers under supply contracts, often in bulk tankers; small and medium-sized formulators are served through chemical distributors that provide smaller pack sizes, local stock and technical support.
Formulation (coatings and inks): paint and ink manufacturers combine alkyds with pigments, extenders, driers, anti-skinning agents and solvents to produce enamels, primers, wood stains and varnishes, industrial finishes and printing inks.
End users: residential and commercial construction and renovation, furniture and joinery, machinery and equipment manufacturers, metal fabricators, transport and infrastructure owners, and commercial and packaging printers.
Alkyd resins and the coatings and inks made from them are regulated principally through rules on volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, chemical registration and hazard classification, and limits on heavy metals in paints. The key frameworks by major region are summarised below.
