Market Overview
The global Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) market was valued at USD 114.31 Million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 217.34 Million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 9.60% over 2026–2032. Between 2025 and 2032 the market is expected to add USD 103.03 Million in absolute value. Historically, the market expanded from USD 86.45 Million in 2022 to USD 104.17 Million in 2024, reflecting steady uptake of microbial insecticides across fruit and vegetable production, row crops and forest protection programmes.
Btk is the most widely used microbial insecticide in agriculture and forestry. Its insecticidal crystal (Cry) proteins act selectively on the larval stages of moths and butterflies, which makes it a core tool for caterpillar control in integrated pest management (IPM) and certified organic production. Demand is supported by tighter regulation of synthetic insecticides, retailer and export-market residue requirements, rising resistance of key caterpillar pests to chemical modes of action, and recurring public programmes against forest defoliators such as the spongy moth and spruce budworm.
Key Findings
By formulation: Liquid formulations formed the largest segment in 2025 with USD 62.87 Million (55.00% share) and are also the fastest-growing formulation, with a CAGR of 10.56%.
By crop type: Fruits & Vegetables led with USD 62.87 Million (55.00% share) in 2025, while Cereals & Grains is the fastest-growing crop type at a CAGR of 11.41%.
By target pest: Lepidoptera (Caterpillars) dominated with USD 102.88 Million (90.00% share), whereas the Others segment is growing faster at a CAGR of 11.46%.
By region: North America was the leading region in 2025 with USD 37.72 Million (33.00% share). Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region, with a CAGR of 11.86%.
By country: The U.S. was the largest country market in 2025 at USD 30.18 Million, while India is the fastest-growing country market, with a CAGR of 14.22%.
Segmentation Summary
The market is analysed by formulation (Liquid; Dry (WP & WG)), crop type (Fruits & Vegetables; Cereals & Grains; Forestry & Others) and target pest (Lepidoptera (Caterpillars); Others), across five regions and their constituent countries. Liquid formulations benefit from ease of tank-mixing, compatibility with drone and ultra-low-volume aerial application, and their established role in forest spraying, whereas dry wettable powder (WP) and water-dispersible granule (WG) products retain a large base in markets where shelf stability and storage without temperature control are important. Dry formulations held the larger share in Asia Pacific and the Middle East & Africa in 2025.
Fruits & Vegetables is the anchor crop segment because Btk can be applied close to harvest without residue concerns, which suits high-value horticulture and export produce. Cereals & Grains is growing fastest as caterpillar pressure in maize, rice and soybean-based rotations, including outbreaks of fall armyworm and Helicoverpa armigera, broadens the use of biologicals beyond horticulture. Forestry & Others accounted for 25.00% of global value in 2025, supported by government-funded defoliator programmes.
Competitive Landscape Summary
The market is moderately consolidated at the top and fragmented below. Sumitomo Biorational Company (formed in April 2026 from Valent BioSciences, MGK and Valent North America) and Certis Biologicals (Mitsui & Co.) hold leading positions through long-established brands such as DiPel, Foray, Javelin, Deliver and Thuricide, global registrations and large-scale fermentation capacity. Regional challengers include Certis Belchim and CBC (Europe) – Biogard in Europe, and Vittia and Simbiose in Brazil, while a long tail of domestic producers supplies price-sensitive markets in Asia Pacific and Latin America. Competitive activity since 2022 has centred on acquisitions of biological businesses, fermentation and production capacity expansions, and partnerships to broaden biological portfolios.
Challenges and Opportunities
Key challenges include the short field persistence of Btk deposits under ultraviolet light and rain, the need to target early larval instars, competition from lower-cost synthetic insecticides and generic biologicals, and the reduction in spray demand on crops that carry transgenic Bt traits. Variable product quality in some emerging markets also affects grower confidence. Opportunities lie in improved formulations (UV-protected and drone-ready liquids), expansion into row crops in Brazil, India and China, bundled IPM programmes that combine Btk with pheromones and beneficial insects, and growing public support for natural and organic farming.
Future Outlook
The market is projected to grow from USD 125.40 Million in 2026 to USD 217.34 Million in 2032. Growth is expected to shift gradually toward emerging regions: Asia Pacific, the Middle East & Africa and Latin America are forecast to grow fastest, and Europe is also expected to grow faster than the global average, while North America, the largest region, is forecast to grow at 6.41%. Liquid formulations and cereal and grain applications are expected to gain share through 2032.
The Bacillus Thuringiensis Kurstaki Market market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9.7% from 2022 to 2032.

Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki (Btk) is a gram-positive, spore-forming soil bacterium. During sporulation it produces parasporal crystalline inclusions composed of insecticidal Cry proteins, principally from the Cry1 and Cry2 families (for example Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, Cry1Ac and Cry2Aa in the HD-1 lineage). When susceptible larvae ingest the crystals, the proteins dissolve in the alkaline midgut, are activated by gut proteases and bind to specific receptors on the midgut epithelium, forming pores that stop feeding within hours and lead to larval death. Because the receptors are largely specific to lepidopteran larvae, Btk has low toxicity to mammals, birds, fish, pollinators and most natural enemies. The Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) classifies Bacillus thuringiensis and its insecticidal proteins as Group 11A.
Commercial Btk products are manufactured by submerged fermentation of selected strains (for example HD-1, ABTS-351, SA-11, SA-12 and EG2348), followed by recovery and formulation. Product potency is generally expressed in international units (IU) per milligram or per litre, determined by insect bioassay.
Included in the scope: formulated Btk-based insecticide products sold for crop protection, forestry and other uses, in liquid formulations (suspension concentrates, aqueous suspensions, emulsifiable and oil-based flowables) and dry formulations (wettable powders and water-dispersible granules or dry flowables), measured at manufacturer selling value.
Excluded from the scope: products based on other Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies (such as aizawai, israelensis and tenebrionis), transgenic crops expressing Bt Cry proteins and related seed-trait licensing revenue, unformulated technical material traded between manufacturers, and other microbial insecticides such as baculoviruses and entomopathogenic fungi.

Analytical insights on Bacillus Thuringiensis Kurstaki Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Bacillus Thuringiensis Kurstaki Market market is projected to reach $217.34M by 2032, growing at 9.7% CAGR. The Liquid segment holds the largest share.
The Btk market is shaped by the interaction of regulation, grower economics, pest biology and food-chain requirements. The market grew from USD 86.45 Million in 2022 to USD 114.31 Million in 2025, and its forecast CAGR of 9.60% over 2026–2032 reflects a combination of supportive policy and residue pressures and structural limitations of the product. The growth factor analysis below summarises the main macro and micro factors. The impact scores out of 10 are analyst assessments of the strength of each factor's influence on the market in each period, based on the secondary and primary research conducted for this study.
Regulatory Pressure on Synthetic Insecticides and IPM Requirements
Regulators in major markets are narrowing the range of synthetic insecticides available to growers. In the European Union, active substances must be approved under Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, and several broad-spectrum insecticides have not been renewed, including chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl in 2020. Directive 2009/128/EC on the sustainable use of pesticides requires member states to promote IPM, which gives priority to biological and other non-chemical methods. By contrast, the main Btk strains were renewed by the European Commission in May 2023, with approval for strain ABTS-351 running to 2038. Similar dynamics are visible in other markets: Japan's MIDORI Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems targets a 50% reduction in risk-weighted chemical pesticide use by 2050, and China's earlier action plan for zero growth in pesticide use encouraged substitution with biopesticides. As chemical options are withdrawn or restricted, growers of fruit, vegetables and specialty crops increasingly rely on Btk as a dependable caterpillar control option with a long regulatory track record, a broad label and wide acceptance among food retailers.
Expansion of Organic and Residue-Sensitive Production
Btk is permitted in organic production systems in the major markets and typically carries short or no pre-harvest intervals, which allows growers to control caterpillars close to harvest without adding detectable synthetic residues. Organic farmland worldwide has grown steadily and now covers close to 100 million hectares, according to FiBL statistics, with large areas in Europe, Latin America and Oceania. Beyond certified organic production, food retailers in Europe and North America frequently set residue limits stricter than legal maximum residue levels (MRLs) and limit the number of residues detected per sample. Exporters of fresh produce from Mexico, Spain, Morocco, Kenya, Peru and South Africa therefore integrate Btk into spray programmes to meet buyer requirements. Policy targets reinforce the trend: the EU's Farm to Fork Strategy sets an aspiration of 25% of agricultural land under organic farming by 2030, and India launched a National Mission on Natural Farming in November 2024. These programmes increase the number of growers who need effective non-chemical insecticides, directly supporting Btk demand in the Fruits & Vegetables segment.
Insecticide Resistance Management
Many of the most damaging caterpillar pests, including diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), Spodoptera species and tomato leafminer (Tuta absoluta), have developed resistance to multiple chemical classes such as pyrethroids, organophosphates and, in some regions, diamides. Because Btk acts through a distinct mode of action (IRAC Group 11A) and is a mixture of several Cry proteins, it is widely recommended as a rotation partner in resistance management programmes. Crop advisers use Btk in alternation with chemical insecticides to extend the effective life of newer actives, particularly in brassicas, tomatoes, cotton and soybean. The spread of fall armyworm across Africa from 2016 and into Asia from 2018 has further increased the focus on integrated approaches in maize and other cereals. This role in resistance management gives Btk a place in conventional as well as organic programmes and is a key reason for the strong growth of the Cereals & Grains segment.
Government-Funded Forest Health Programmes
Btk is the principal biological insecticide used in aerial programmes against forest defoliators. In the United States, the USDA Forest Service and APHIS support suppression, eradication and Slow the Spread programmes for the spongy moth (Lymantria dispar), in which Btk is a primary treatment option. In eastern Canada, Btk is used extensively in spruce budworm management, and in Europe it is used against oak and pine processionary moths and other defoliators. These programmes are typically funded by public agencies and are recurrent, as outbreak cycles return every few years. Their buying patterns create large single-tender volumes for liquid formulations suitable for ultra-low-volume aerial application, and they underpin the Forestry & Others segment, particularly in North America. Climate change, which is extending the range of several forest pests northward and to higher elevations, is expected to sustain this demand over the forecast period.
Formulation Innovation and Precision Application
Improved formulations, including UV-protected and encapsulated products, oil-based flowables and high-potency suspension concentrates, can extend residual activity and reduce application rates. The rapid uptake of agricultural drones in China, Brazil and Southeast Asia creates demand for low-volume liquid formulations that disperse well and resist evaporation. Manufacturers that combine formulation advances with application guidance and pest-monitoring tools can improve field performance and justify premium pricing.
Row-Crop and Emerging-Market Expansion
Large row-crop markets, such as soybean, cotton and maize in Brazil and Argentina, pulses and cereals in India, and rice and maize in China and Southeast Asia, remain under-penetrated by biological insecticides. Brazil's rapidly expanding bioinputs sector, supported by a dedicated bioinputs law enacted in December 2024, and India's push toward natural farming create opportunities for both multinational and local suppliers to expand Btk use beyond horticulture.
Integrated Biological Programmes
Btk is increasingly sold as part of broader biological programmes that combine microbial insecticides with pheromone mating disruption, beneficial insects, baculoviruses and biostimulants. Consolidation among biocontrol companies, such as the acquisitions completed by CBC Group and BioFirst Group since 2023, is creating integrated portfolios and distribution networks that can position Btk within complete crop programmes for protected horticulture, orchards and vineyards.
Limited Field Persistence and Application Sensitivity
Btk crystals and spores degrade quickly under ultraviolet light and can be washed off by rain, so field residual activity is usually a few days. Because the product must be ingested, efficacy depends on thorough spray coverage and on targeting early larval instars before larvae bore into fruit or stems. Large, late-instar larvae and boring pests are harder to control. These characteristics require more frequent applications and better pest monitoring than many synthetic insecticides, which raises the cost and management burden for growers and limits adoption where advisory support is weak.
Competition from Low-Cost Chemicals and Transgenic Bt Crops
In price-sensitive markets, generic pyrethroids, organophosphates and off-patent insecticides remain cheaper per hectare treated than Btk. In addition, the wide adoption of transgenic crops expressing Cry proteins, such as Bt cotton in India and Bt maize and soybean in the Americas, reduces the need for foliar caterpillar sprays on these crops. Lower-priced locally produced Bt products in China, India and Brazil also intensify price competition, and inconsistent quality among some products can undermine grower confidence in the category.
Registration Costs and Timelines
Although microbial pesticides often benefit from reduced data requirements, new strains and formulations still require extensive dossiers on identity, potency, toxicology and environmental fate in each jurisdiction. Registration timelines in some markets can extend over several years, which delays the launch of improved products and raises entry costs for smaller manufacturers.
Consolidation of the Biologicals Industry
Large agrochemical and trading groups are reorganising and expanding their biological businesses. Sumitomo Chemical combined Valent BioSciences, MGK and Valent North America into Sumitomo Biorational Company in April 2026, Mitsui & Co. formed Certis Belchim in 2022, and specialist biocontrol groups have acquired producers of beneficial insects and microbials. This trend is increasing the scale and reach of the leading Btk suppliers.
Capacity Investment in Fermentation
Manufacturers are investing in fermentation, recovery and pilot-scale capacity to secure supply and develop new strains and formulations, as illustrated by the expansion of Valent BioSciences' Osage, Iowa facility and investments by Brazilian producers such as Simbiose.
Resistance to Bt Proteins (Challenge)
Field resistance to Btk sprays has been documented in diamondback moth populations, and resistance to Cry proteins in transgenic crops, such as pink bollworm resistance to Bt cotton in India, highlights the risk of over-reliance on Bt proteins. Resistance management through rotation and multi-protein products is therefore critical to sustaining the efficacy of Btk.
Product Quality and Counterfeit Products (Challenge)
In several emerging markets, substandard or mislabelled biopesticides with low or no viable active ingredient have been reported. Such products damage the reputation of the category and slow adoption. Stronger enforcement by regulators and quality certification by established manufacturers are needed to address this challenge.
The Btk value chain spans strain development and raw materials, fermentation-based manufacturing, distribution and end use. Value addition is concentrated in proprietary strains, fermentation know-how, formulation technology and regulatory registrations.

The group is organised into four "pure-play" platforms: UPL Corporation (international crop protection), UPL SAS (India crop protection), Advanta (global hybrid seeds and post-harvest) and SUPERFORM (active ingredients and specialty chemicals). Over 2024–2026 UPL has executed a deleveraging programme — rights issue, Advanta minority sales, US$850m gross debt reduction in FY26 — and launched a simplification restructuring creating UPL Global, alongside a pending Advanta IPO. The equity, however, trades near multi-year lows on leadership turnover, holdco discount and execution concerns. --- ### What UPL does UPL manufactures, formulates, registers and sells crop-protection products (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, plant-growth regulators, seed treatments), biosolutions branded under "Natural Plant Protection" (NPP), hybrid seeds (field corn, sunflower, sorghum, canola, rice, vegetables), post-harvest solutions (fruit coatings, fungicides and storage treatments under the Decco brand), and industrial/specialty chemicals including active ingredients sold to third parties. The company's own description (Q1 FY27 press release, 3 Aug 2026) presents UPL as a global provider of sustainable agricultural products and solutions spanning the whole agrifood value chain, organised through four pure-play platforms: UPL Corporation Ltd, UPL Sustainable Agri Solutions Ltd (UPL SAS), Advanta Enterprises Ltd and SUPERFORM Chemistries Ltd (formerly UPL Speciality Chemicals Ltd). ### Business model UPL's economic engine is the post-patent (generic) agrochemical model, enhanced with differentiation: 1. **Backward integration in India**: Gujarat-based plants manufacture technical-grade active ingredients (AIs) and intermediates at low cost; SUPERFORM supplies both UPL's own crop-protection platforms and third parties. 2. **Global registration moat**: Thousands of product registrations across Latin America, North America, Europe and Asia — inherited and expanded via Arysta — create barriers for pure generic exporters. In FY26 UPL Corp launched 300+ new products generating US$160m+ revenue from new launches (FY26 earnings presentation). 3. **Differentiated and sustainable portfolio**: Combination products, proprietary mixtures, biosolutions (NPP) and "ProNutiva" seed-to-harvest programmes. Management expects ≈US$700m of FY27 revenue from the sustainable solutions portfolio (Q1 FY27 call). The FY25 sustainability report states 38% of revenue came from differentiated and sustainable solutions. 4. **Seeds**: Advanta breeds and sells locally adapted hybrids with 900+ varieties across 21 breeding crops, distributed in 74 countries (Advanta DRHP, as of 30 Sep 2025). 5. **Distribution and channel credit**: Sales go through distributors, retailers and co-operatives; extended credit terms (notably in Brazil) make working capital a central management variable. ### Revenue model mix UPL is overwhelmingly a product business. There is no material subscription or licensing revenue disclosed. Approximate FY26 platform mix (gross, before inter-segment eliminations; FY26 earnings release): Note: Platform revenues sum to more than consolidated revenue because SUPERFORM sells AIs to the crop-protection platforms (eliminated on consolidation). Management stated non-agchem revenue share is roughly 27% (Q3 FY26 press release). ### Value chain position UPL spans: intermediates → technical AI manufacture (SUPERFORM) → formulation (India and international plants) → registration and regulatory dossiers → branded distribution to growers; plus germplasm/breeding → seed production → seed sales (Advanta); and post-harvest treatments for fruit and vegetable packers (Decco). ### Independent characterisation UPL is best understood as a leveraged, emerging-market-origin consolidator of the global off-patent crop-protection market that is in transition toward a holding-company structure with separately listed operating assets. Its competitive edge is cost and registration breadth rather than discovery chemistry; its key weaknesses are cyclicality (the 2023–24 channel destocking cut revenue 20% and produced a loss), high financial leverage relative to rated peers (sub-investment-grade at the UPL Corp level), and governance perceptions tied to complex inter-company structures. The 2026 restructuring (UPL Global) and the Advanta IPO are explicit attempts to remedy the conglomerate discount — DAM Capital estimates the holdco discount at ~61% (Aug 2026).
