We at Wantstats follow an extensive process for arriving at market estimations, which involves the use of multiple forecasting techniques as mentioned below.
Research Methodology for Market size estimation
Understanding the market in terms of valuation is a crucial task. This becomes significantly important while investing in and choosing the correct business opportunities. In this regard, we at Wantstats undertake two market sizing approaches simultaneously, namely, the top-down and bottom-up approaches. In this step, we assess different data points, numeric attributes, information, and industry trends to arrive at the estimates and forecast values for the coming years. We use different mathematical models to estimate the market sizes of different economies and segments, each of which is further summed up to define the total market.
We at Wantstats employ a proprietary statistical tool for market estimations, which helps us to arrive at market size estimates and forecasts for different markets and industries.
Bottom-UP approach
In the bottom-up approach, the revenue of key companies and their shares in the market are assessed to deduce the market size. More than 25 key players operating in the Global Bioplastics market are studied. The segmental revenue of each player is analyzed and the size for the Global Bioplastics market is extracted from the segmental/product revenue with the help of secondary and primary research. The extracted size for the market is then validated with industry experts and partner consultants. This derived market size contributes to around 65%–70% of the total global market share in terms of revenue for the Global Bioplastics market. Using the data triangulation method, the overall global market size is estimated.
Top-Down approach
The overall market size is then used in the top-down procedure to estimate the size of the other sub-markets with the help of percentage splits of the market segments from secondary and primary research. The demand-side analysis is conducted, in which the expenditure of major industry players in each region is studied.
The countries considered in the scope of the Global Bioplastics market are the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, China, Japan, India, Australia & New Zealand, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and others. However, the number of countries varies according to the market. The figure below depicts the process of market estimation using independent tools employed by our analysts to arrive at the sizing of the market.
As a part of the market engineering, the both top-down and bottom-up approaches are utilized along with data triangulation models to derive and verify the market sizes and forecast over the coming years.
Data Triangulation
After arriving at the overall market sizes, the total market is divided into several segments and sub-segments. Again, the market breakdown and data triangulation procedures are implemented, wherever applicable, to complete the overall market engineering process and gather the exact statistics for all segments and sub-segments. The data is triangulated by studying various factors and trends from the demand and supply sides. Along with this, the market size is validated using the top-down and bottom-up approaches.
Validation
Validation is the most important stage of the report making process. Validation via an intricately designed feedback process helps us finalize the sizing estimates and forecast for the final collation. Extensive primary research is performed to verify the information. This includes telephonic and personal interviews, e-mails, feedback forms, questionnaires, and polling options/answers with a group of relevant industry participants. Validation helps to duly check the authenticity of the key industry trends, market dynamics, company market share, different business models, and conclusions.

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation is the chemicals engine of Japan's largest diversified chemical group, Mitsubishi Chemical Group. Following the July 2025 sale of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma to Bain Capital for roughly JPY 510 billion, the group has narrowed to two pillars: chemicals (run through MCC) and industrial gases (run through ~50%-owned, separately listed Nippon Sanso Holdings). MCC operates three reporting segments — Specialty Materials (engineering plastics, films, carbon fiber composites, semiconductor process materials and services, food-packaging polymers), MMA & Derivatives (a global leader in methyl methacrylate and PMMA) and Basic Materials & Polymers (ethylene, polyolefins, coal chemicals). Under "KAITEKI Vision 35" and the Medium-Term Management Plan 2029, management is pursuing a "Green Specialty" identity: harvesting and restructuring commoditised petrochemical, coke and MMA assets while investing in semiconductor, mobility and food-preservation materials. FY2025 profits were depressed by restructuring charges, but Q1 FY2026 core operating income more than doubled year-on-year. --- ### What the company does Mitsubishi Chemical Group is a holding company whose consolidated revenue (JPY 3,704.0bn in FY2025) comes from four reportable segments. Three are operated by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Specialty Materials; MMA & Derivatives; Basic Materials & Polymers), and the fourth (Industrial Gases) is operated by Nippon Sanso Holdings and its subsidiaries (Taiyo Nippon Sanso in Japan, Matheson Tri-Gas in the US, Nippon Gases in Europe, plus Asia-Oceania operations including Coregas in Australia/New Zealand from July 2025). The former Pharma segment was reclassified as discontinued operations after the transfer of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma's business on 1 July 2025. FY2025 segment revenue mix (Yuho FY2025, external revenue basis per EDINET-derived data): Industrial Gases ~37–38%, Specialty Materials ~29–30%, Basic Materials & Polymers ~21–22%, MMA & Derivatives ~10%. The striking feature of the current profile is the asymmetry between revenue and profit: Industrial Gases delivered JPY 200.7bn of the group's JPY 225.0bn FY2025 core operating income (~89%), while the three MCC-run chemical segments combined (including corporate/other) contributed only JPY 24.3bn. MCC's investment case therefore rests on restoring chemical-segment profitability, which management guides to JPY 100bn in FY2026. ### Business and revenue model ### Customer types and end-markets Customers are predominantly B2B manufacturers: semiconductor device makers and equipment OEMs; display and electronics makers; automotive OEMs and Tier-1s (including electric-vehicle and robotaxi programmes); food and beverage packaging converters; medical/cell-culture device makers; construction and coatings formulators; and steelmakers (coke, industrial gases). End-markets highlighted by management in FY2025: semiconductors (precision cleaning, high-performance engineering plastics for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, synthetic quartz, GaN substrates), mobility (carbon-fibre composite parts, DURABIO bio-based polycarbonate — adopted by Audi for Q3 door-switch inserts in June 2026), food quality preservation (Soarnol EVOH barrier resin, films), healthcare/life sciences, and AI data-centre optical interconnects (investment in NLM Photonics, 2026). ### Company's own description vs. independent characterisation The group describes itself under KAITEKI Vision 35 as aiming to become a "Green Specialty Company," with CEO Chikumoto framing the current phase as a return to "fundamentals-focused" management — clear profit responsibility for every business and a "lean and strong" organisation (Nomura Asset Management interview, 2025–26). Independent characterisation: In practice MCG today is a gases-funded chemical restructuring story. A high-quality, mid-teens-margin industrial-gas annuity (consolidated but ~50% minority-owned) masks a chemical portfolio that in FY2025 earned a low-single-digit core margin and booked roughly JPY 195bn of non-recurring losses (core-to-reported operating income bridge). The equity story hinges on (a) Specialty Materials compounding from JPY 23.9bn (FY2024) toward management's JPY 144bn FY2029 ambition, (b) the MMA cycle bottoming, and (c) completing the exit or consolidation of structurally challenged commodity assets (coke, Mizushima ethylene, basic petrochemicals spin-off).
BASF is the world's largest chemical company by sales, built on the Verbund principle of physically and energetically integrated production sites that turn a handful of feedstocks into thousands of products. Since September 2024 it has run under the "Winning Ways" strategy, which splits the portfolio into four core segments (Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Nutrition & Care) that stay integrated, and standalone businesses (Agricultural Solutions, Battery Materials, Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions, and the now-divested Coatings) that are being monetized or prepared for capital-market options. In 2025 it generated €59.7 billion in sales and €6.6 billion in EBITDA before special items, a cyclical trough. In 2026 it closed the €7.7 billion Coatings transaction, started up its €-multi-billion Zhanjiang Verbund site, raised earnings guidance, and approached Evonik about a takeover. The investment debate is whether structural cost cuts and portfolio proceeds can restore returns above the cost of capital. --- **The company's own description.** BASF describes its purpose with the line "we create chemistry for a sustainable future" (BASF news release boilerplate, 2026) and states its ambition to be the preferred chemical company for enabling customers' green transformation. It reports around 108,000 employees, customers in nearly every sector and almost every country, and sales of around €60 billion in 2025. The portfolio is described as four core segments plus standalone businesses bundled in Surface Technologies and Agricultural Solutions. **Independent characterization.** BASF is best understood as three businesses under one roof: 1. **An integrated commodity and intermediates engine** (Chemicals, the Monomers half of Materials). This is a steam-cracker-to-derivatives chain selling ethylene and propylene derivatives, isocyanates, polyamide precursors and intermediates on spread economics. Earnings are driven by feedstock and energy costs, operating rates and regional supply-demand. It is the most capital-intensive part of the group and the main source of the 2023–2025 earnings decline: Chemicals EBITDA before special items fell from €1,342 million in 2024 to €853 million in 2025 (Factsheet FY2025). 2. **Formulated and performance products** (Performance Materials, Industrial Solutions, Nutrition & Care). These sell on specification and performance to automotive, construction, packaging, consumer goods, pharma and nutrition customers. Margins are steadier but have come under pressure from Asian competition and, in Care Chemicals, from consumer trading-down to private-label products (Factsheet FY2025 commentary). 3. **Standalone franchises** with different industry logic: Agricultural Solutions (crop protection, seeds and traits, digital farming), ECMS (emissions catalysts plus precious-metal trading and recycling) and Battery Materials. Agricultural Solutions is the group's highest-margin segment at 21.7% EBITDA margin before special items in FY2025 and the largest single earnings contributor at €2,081 million. **Revenue model.** Revenue is almost entirely product sales under supply contracts and spot transactions. There is no subscription model of consequence; digital farming (xarvio) and licensing of process technology and catalysts are small. Seeds and traits include royalty and licensing income within Agricultural Solutions, not separately disclosed. Precious-metal trading inflates ECMS sales (€7,978 million in FY2025) with pass-through metal value, which is why BASF quotes group margins both including and excluding metals (12.3% excluding metals in FY2025 per the CFO on the February 27, 2026 call, versus 11.0% reported). **Value chain position.** Upstream to midstream in petrochemicals with captive crackers at Ludwigshafen, Antwerp, Port Arthur (joint venture with TotalEnergies), Nanjing (joint venture with Sinopec) and Zhanjiang; midstream to downstream in engineering plastics, polyurethane systems, dispersions, additives, surfactants and vitamins; branded and channel-driven in agriculture. BASF exited upstream oil and gas operations when Wintershall Dea's E&P business was transferred to Harbour Energy in September 2024. **Customers and end-markets.** BASF serves industrial customers in chemicals and plastics, transportation, construction, consumer goods, agriculture, electronics, energy and resources, and health and nutrition. Intersegment transfers are large (Chemicals transferred €3,432 million internally in FY2025 on €10,055 million of third-party sales), which shows how much of the upstream output feeds BASF's own downstream chains.
Plantic Technologies Limited is an Australian materials company that developed and commercialised PLANTIC, a high-barrier bioplastic made principally from high-amylose corn starch from non-genetically modified crops. Founded in 2001 to commercialise publicly funded CRC research, it moved from biodegradable confectionery trays to ultra-high oxygen-barrier films and sheets for modified-atmosphere packaging of fresh meat, poultry, seafood, smoked and processed meats, and pasta. After a disappointing AIM listing (2007–2010) and a period in private ownership under Billabong founder Gordon Merchant, it became part of Japan's Kuraray Group in April 2015. Kuraray, the company that commercialised EVOH barrier resin (EVAL) in 1972, uses Plantic as its bio-based complement in barrier materials. Plantic is now a small, technology-centred subsidiary. Its strategic value lies in a starch-based barrier chemistry that can be built into recycle-ready, paper-recyclable and compostable packaging structures, sold through Kuraray's global network and partners such as Sealed Air. --- ### What the company does Plantic designs, manufactures and sells bio-based barrier packaging materials. Its core technology is a polymer derived mainly from modified high-amylose corn starch. The material has very low oxygen permeability, so a thin PLANTIC layer can do the job that EVOH or PVDC barrier layers do in conventional multilayer packaging. Kuraray's 2015 acquisition release summarised Plantic's principal business as the manufacture and sale of the biomass-based barrier product PLANTIC film. It described Plantic as headquartered in Australia, with its head office, principal manufacturing and R&D located there, supplying barrier packaging products made mainly from bio-based resources to the global market. The physical forms produced have included: - **Extruded sheet** (rigid and semi-rigid, for thermoformed trays) and resin granules for distribution to converters worldwide. Packaging Gateway's profile of the Altona plant states that about 70% of sheet output was exported. - **Multilayer barrier films**, in which a PLANTIC core is laminated or coextruded between outer layers (PE, PET/rPET, bio-PBS, kraft paper). - **Extrusion-coating resin** (PLANTIC EP), sold to converters to coat paper, paperboard or film. ### Business model and revenue model Plantic is a product (materials) business. It earns revenue mainly from selling sheet, film and resin to packaging converters and, directly or through partners, to brand owners and retailers. There is no evidence of a subscription model. Licensing appears at most incidental; the Sealed Air arrangement is described publicly as a supply and co-production arrangement, not a licence. ### Value-chain position Plantic sits upstream of converters and downstream of agricultural feedstocks: Corn starch growers and processors → Plantic (polymer formulation, resin, sheet and film) → converters and film laminators (e.g., Sealed Air in North America) → meat, poultry, seafood and processed-food packers → retailers (e.g., Coles in Australia) → consumers. As part of Kuraray, Plantic is also positioned alongside EVAL (EVOH) resin and Kuraray's other barrier films. This makes Kuraray one of very few suppliers that can offer both petrochemical and bio-based gas-barrier layers. ### Customer types and end-markets **End-markets:** fresh protein MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) and vacuum skin packaging (VSP); processed meats; fresh pasta; coffee; dry and shelf-stable goods using paper-based barrier pouches; and historically confectionery inserts. Geographically the company has supplied Australia, North America and Europe, and Japan/South Korea via Kuraray distribution since 2014. ### Company's own description Plantic's corporate self-description (as reproduced by Prospeo from its LinkedIn/web profile) presents it as a leading innovator in high-barrier bioplastics and a member of the Kuraray group. It differentiates itself from other bioplastics firms by saying that both its raw material and its polymer are grown in a field, rather than the polymer being made in a refinery from organic feedstock. Kuraray's own product communications describe PLANTIC as made from starch and as one of the world's most progressive bio-based plastics, usable in both recycle-ready and compostable formats. **Note:** No "latest annual report" description exists for Plantic, because it does not publish one. Kuraray's integrated reports reviewed for this dossier do not single out Plantic in their segment narratives. ### Independent characterisation Plantic is best understood today as a specialty technology platform inside a large chemicals group, not as a free-standing growth company. Its history shows strong technology and weak standalone economics. The AIM listing raised £20M in 2007 at a £50.9M valuation. Three and a half years later the whole company was bought for about A$10.2M, close to its A$9.4M cash balance. Kuraray paid an undisclosed price in 2015 and set a revenue goal of ¥10 billion within three years. Achievement of that goal has never been publicly confirmed. The technology's strategic relevance has increased since 2019, because packaging regulation has shifted from "biodegradable" claims toward recyclability, mono-material design and recovered-fibre compatibility. Plantic's ability to rinse out of paper during repulping (PLANTIC EP) and to serve as a thin barrier layer in rPET or PE structures fits that shift better than its original compostable-tray positioning did. It is, however, a small business by headcount. Aggregator data suggests a few dozen staff at Altona. Its commercial fate therefore depends heavily on Kuraray's prioritisation and on partner-led conversion capacity, especially Sealed Air in North America.
