Over the forecast horizon, the market is expected to cross USD 669.69 Million in 2027 and USD 780.13 Million in 2030.
Calendering resins are polymer grades engineered for processing on multi-roll calenders, where a heated, plasticised or rigid compound is squeezed between counter-rotating rolls to produce continuous film, sheet and coated substrates of tightly controlled gauge. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) dominates this processing route because its broad melt-processing window, compatibility with plasticisers, stabilisers and fillers, and inherent flame retardance make it uniquely suited to high-throughput calendering. Demand is anchored in rigid and flexible films and sheets for packaging, stationery, decorative and graphic applications, in resilient flooring such as vinyl composition tile, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) wear and print layers and homogeneous sheet flooring, and in coated fabrics, synthetic leather, roofing membranes and medical films.

Primary Research
Primary research was conducted through in-depth telephone and online interviews with participants on both the supply and demand sides of the market. On the supply side, respondents included product and marketing managers, technical service specialists and business development executives at PVC and specialty resin producers, as well as distributors and compounders. On the demand side, respondents included procurement heads, plant managers and R&D personnel at calendered film and sheet producers, resilient flooring manufacturers and coated fabric and synthetic leather converters, along with independent industry experts.
The objectives of primary research were to validate the market definition and segmentation; verify segment and regional splits; obtain insights on pricing, grade selection criteria and supplier qualification; understand the impact of regulation and sustainability requirements; and gather forward-looking views on capacity, demand and technology trends.
Market Size Estimation
Top-down approach: Global PVC resin consumption was taken as the starting point and narrowed to calendering-grade resin by applying the share of PVC processed by calendering in each region, derived from conversion-process data and validated by industry participants. This volume was then split by resin type and application and converted to value using region-specific average selling prices for each resin type.
Bottom-up approach: Calendering line capacities and utilisation rates of major calendered film, sheet and flooring producers were used to estimate resin consumption by country and application. Country-level volumes were multiplied by prevailing calendering-grade resin prices and aggregated to regional and global levels.
Data triangulation: The outputs of the two approaches were compared at segment, country and regional levels. Discrepancies were investigated through additional secondary research and primary interviews, and the final market size was established after reconciling both estimates with supply-side revenue analysis of leading producers.
Forecasting Methodology
Forecasts were developed using a driver-based model that links calendering resin demand to its underlying end-use indicators. Factors considered include construction output and residential renovation activity (for flooring and membranes), packaging and consumer goods demand (for films and sheets), automotive production (for synthetic leather and interior films), GDP and industrial production growth, population and urbanisation, PVC capacity additions and operating rates, feedstock and energy price trends, regulatory developments affecting additives and vinyl chloride monomer, and substitution risk from competing materials. Each driver was assigned an impact weighting by region and period, and the resulting forecasts were stress-tested against historic growth patterns and expert opinion.
Assumptions and Limitations
Values are expressed in nominal USD at constant average exchange rates for the base year; currency fluctuations over the forecast period are not modelled.
Average selling prices are assumed to follow feedstock and energy cost trends without a sustained structural shock comparable to the 2021–2022 price spike.
No major new restriction banning PVC in calendered applications in any major region is assumed during the forecast period, although tightening of additive regulations is factored in.
Macroeconomic conditions, including construction and consumer spending, are assumed to follow consensus outlooks for each region.
Country-level estimates for "Rest of" groupings aggregate several smaller markets and are subject to wider margins of uncertainty.
Publicly available data on calendering-specific resin consumption is limited; segment splits rely partly on primary research and modelled estimates.

View Subscription PlansIntroduction
The Global Calendering Resins Market is moderately consolidated. Calendering resins are supplied predominantly by large, vertically integrated chlor-vinyl producers that control chlorine, ethylene or ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer and PVC production, complemented by specialty producers with deep portfolios of copolymer, cross-linked, graft and paste grades. The leading producers operate world-scale plants on the U.S. Gulf Coast, in Western Europe, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and China, and export to converters worldwide. The market is, however, fragmented at the regional level in Asia, where numerous Chinese ethylene- and carbide-based PVC producers compete primarily on price in standard suspension grades.
Competition takes two forms. In standard suspension grades used for general films, sheets and flooring layers, competition is largely price-driven and closely tied to feedstock costs, operating rates and trade flows; producers with integrated, low-cost U.S. Gulf Coast positions have structural advantages. In specialty grades, such as vinyl chloride–vinyl acetate copolymers, high-K and ultra-high-polymerisation resins, cross-linked and acrylic-grafted PVC, competition centres on grade performance, technical service on the calender and long qualification histories with converters. Since 2022, competitive strategies have been dominated by three themes: capacity additions in low-cost locations (notably the U.S. Gulf Coast and India), rationalisation of high-cost capacity in Europe and South Korea, and the launch of bio-attributed, circular-attributed and low-carbon PVC grades.

This chapter evaluates the macro and micro factors influencing growth, followed by a detailed discussion of drivers, restraints, opportunities, and key trends and challenges. The impact scores presented in the growth factor analysis are analyst assessments based on secondary research, primary interviews and the forecast model, rated on a scale of 1 (minimal impact) to 10 (very strong impact) for each forecast sub-period.
Rapid Growth of Luxury Vinyl Tile and Rigid-Core Flooring
Resilient vinyl flooring has been one of the fastest-growing floor covering categories globally over the past decade, and this is a primary driver for calendering resin demand. LVT and rigid-core products such as stone-plastic composite (SPC) flooring rely on calendered PVC films for their wear layers, printed décor films and, in many constructions, balancing and core layers. Large-scale manufacturing hubs in China, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries have expanded rapidly to supply North American and European importers, while domestic consumption is rising in India, the Middle East and Latin America as urban households and commercial developers seek waterproof, durable, easily installed and affordable alternatives to ceramic tile, laminate and hardwood. Trade measures on Chinese flooring imports have encouraged capacity diversification into Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia, multiplying the number of calendering lines requiring high-quality resin. Commercial segments such as healthcare, education and retail also continue to specify homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl sheet for hygiene and acoustic performance. These trends underpin the 6.05% CAGR projected for the Flooring segment, the highest among applications.
Expanding Construction and Infrastructure Activity in Emerging Economies
Construction is the single largest end-use sector for PVC, and calendered products such as flooring, roofing membranes, waterproofing sheets, wall coverings and window films are closely tied to building activity. Emerging economies are investing heavily in housing and infrastructure: India's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana housing programme and its large public infrastructure budget, Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 giga-projects, and urbanisation across Southeast Asia and Africa are sustaining demand for durable, low-cost building materials. In China, although residential property activity has slowed since 2021, renovation, public housing and infrastructure programmes continue to support high absolute consumption of PVC-based building products. In mature markets, renovation and energy-efficiency retrofits, supported by measures such as the European Union's Renovation Wave strategy, provide a steady base of demand. These construction dynamics favour PVC suspension resin as the main input to calendered building products and support above-average growth in Asia Pacific and the Middle East & Africa.
Demand for Versatile, Cost-Effective Films and Sheets
Calendered PVC films and sheets offer an unusual combination of clarity, printability, stiffness or flexibility on demand, chemical resistance and thermoformability at a competitive cost. These properties support use in rigid packaging such as blister and clamshell packs, pharmaceutical blister films, stationery and office products, credit and identity cards, self-adhesive graphic and signage films, decorative furniture foils, pool liners and agricultural films. Growth in organised retail and e-commerce in emerging markets, rising pharmaceutical production in India and China, and steady demand for decorative surfaces in furniture and interior design all add to resin consumption. Calendering remains the preferred route for wide, high-quality PVC films because it delivers tight gauge control and excellent surface finish at high output. Consequently, Films & Sheets is projected to remain the largest application, rising from USD 358.50 Million in 2025 to USD 504.87 Million in 2032.
Investment in Integrated Chlor-Vinyl Capacity
Producers continue to invest in integrated chlorine, ethylene dichloride (EDC), vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and PVC capacity, improving the availability and cost competitiveness of calendering grades. In the United States, Shintech has expanded its integrated Louisiana operations, and Gulf Coast producers benefit from advantaged shale-based ethane feedstock. In India, Reliance Industries and other domestic players have announced substantial new PVC capacity to reduce reliance on imports, while Chinese producers continue to add ethylene-based and calcium carbide-based capacity. Integration secures feedstock supply, supports consistent resin quality and allows producers to tailor grades for calendering customers. Expanded supply in high-growth regions shortens supply chains for converters and supports downstream investment in calendering lines, reinforcing market growth in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and North America.
Bio-Attributed, Circular and Low-Carbon Resin Grades
Brand owners, flooring manufacturers and specifiers increasingly demand materials with lower carbon footprints and verified recycled or renewable content. Producers are responding with mass-balance bio-attributed PVC certified under schemes such as ISCC PLUS, grades produced with renewable energy, and resins incorporating chemically or mechanically recycled content. These products command premium pricing and help converters meet customer sustainability targets, offering a route to value growth beyond volume.
Specialty and Copolymer Calendering Grades
Specialty calendering grades, including vinyl chloride–vinyl acetate copolymers, matting and high-K-value resins and grades tailored for low-temperature processing or improved fusion, enable converters to differentiate products and improve line efficiency. The Others resin type segment is forecast to grow at 6.51%, above the 5.10% market average, signalling a gradual mix shift towards higher-value grades that resin producers can exploit with targeted technical service.
Capacity Build-Out in India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East
India is the fastest-growing country market (CAGR 8.18%), driven by construction, packaging and a growing domestic flooring industry, while Southeast Asian economies are becoming major flooring export hubs. The Gulf states are investing in downstream petrochemicals and construction. Producers that establish local supply, technical centres and partnerships with calendering converters in these regions can capture a disproportionate share of incremental demand.
Volatility in Feedstock and Energy Costs
Calendering resin prices are directly linked to ethylene, chlorine and energy costs. The energy crisis of 2022 sharply raised production costs for European chlor-alkali and PVC producers, leading to reduced operating rates and increased imports. Price swings complicate pricing for converters operating on fixed-price contracts with flooring and packaging customers, compress margins and can delay investment decisions. Calcium carbide-based PVC production in China is similarly exposed to coal and electricity prices. This volatility is a persistent inhibitor of stable market growth, particularly in Europe.
Regulatory and Environmental Scrutiny of PVC and Its Additives
PVC faces continuing scrutiny over its life cycle, including the use of ortho-phthalate plasticisers in flexible applications, legacy lead-based stabilisers, organotin compounds, vinyl chloride monomer emissions and end-of-life incineration. In the European Union, the European Chemicals Agency published an investigation report on PVC and its additives in 2023, and lead in PVC has been restricted under REACH. Some green-building schemes and corporate procurement policies discourage PVC use. These pressures raise compliance costs, require reformulation and can lead to substitution in sensitive segments such as packaging and children's products.
Competition from Alternative Materials
In films and sheets, PVC competes with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene and other polyolefin films, especially in rigid packaging where brand owners are moving toward mono-material, more easily recyclable formats. In flooring, PVC-free resilient products based on polyolefins or polyurethane, as well as linoleum and rubber, are gaining traction in specification-driven European and North American markets. While PVC retains strong cost and performance advantages, substitution limits growth in certain end uses.
Shift to Non-Phthalate Plasticisers and Lead-Free Stabilisers
Calendered flexible PVC formulations are moving decisively towards non-phthalate plasticisers such as DOTP, DINCH and bio-based alternatives, and towards calcium-zinc and other lead-free stabiliser systems. This reformulation affects resin selection, because porosity and plasticiser absorption behaviour must be matched to the new additive packages, and creates a need for close collaboration between resin suppliers, additive producers and converters.
Growth of PVC Recycling and Take-Back Programmes
Industry programmes such as VinylPlus in Europe, together with flooring take-back schemes operated by manufacturers, are increasing the volume of recycled PVC used in calendered products, especially in flooring backing layers. This trend supports the circularity credentials of PVC but can displace part of the virgin resin demand in certain layers.
Supply Chain Realignment and Trade Measures
Anti-dumping actions, tariffs and trade investigations on PVC resin and finished vinyl flooring are reshaping trade flows. In January 2025 the European Union imposed definitive anti-dumping duties on suspension PVC imports from the United States and Egypt, India has investigated suspension PVC imports from several countries, and Section 301 tariffs apply to U.S. imports of vinyl flooring from China. Converters are diversifying sourcing and production locations, which creates opportunities for regional resin suppliers but also adds complexity and cost.
Digitalisation and Process Optimisation in Calendering
Calendering lines are increasingly equipped with inline gauge measurement, automated roll-gap control and data-driven process optimisation. These technologies place greater emphasis on resin lot-to-lot consistency and enable converters to run thinner, higher-value films with lower scrap rates, rewarding suppliers that deliver tightly specified grades.
The calendering resins value chain extends from basic petrochemical and mineral feedstocks through resin polymerisation and compounding to the conversion of calendered products and their end users.
Raw materials and inputs: Feedstock cost and availability determine the competitiveness of resin producers. Integration into chlorine, ethylene and VCM gives producers cost and supply-security advantages, while non-integrated producers face greater margin volatility.
Resin manufacturing: Calendering grades require precise control over particle morphology and molecular weight. Process know-how and quality control are key differentiators, and producers typically maintain dedicated grade portfolios for rigid and flexible calendering.
Distribution and channels: Large calendered-film and flooring producers buy directly under annual or quarterly contracts, while smaller converters rely on distributors that offer smaller lot sizes, credit and local logistics.
Conversion: Calendering is capital intensive, and converters prioritise resin consistency, processability and qualification history. Switching suppliers requires line trials, creating customer stickiness.
End users: Demand is ultimately determined by construction, packaging and consumer markets, and increasingly by end-user sustainability requirements that flow back up the chain.
Calendering resins are subject to regulations governing the production of vinyl chloride and PVC, the additives used in calendered compounds, product safety in specific end uses, and product standards. The key frameworks by major region are summarised below.

Nippon Soda is a mid-cap, diversified Japanese chemical group founded in 1920 as a chlor-alkali producer and progressively re-shaped into a portfolio anchored by two high-value franchises: research-based crop protection (Agri Business, 35% of FY3/26 sales) and specialty "Chemical Materials" (25%), complemented by lower-margin but stable trading/logistics, plant engineering and environmental-recycling businesses. Its crown jewels are niche, high-barrier products in which it holds globally relevant positions — the pharmaceutical excipient NISSO HPC (hydroxypropyl cellulose), liquid polybutadiene NISSO-PB for AI-server copper-clad laminates, KrF photoresist polymer VP-POLYMER, and proprietary agrochemicals such as Mospilan (acetamiprid) and Topsin-M. With FY3/26 net sales of JPY 152.1 billion, record net profit of JPY 18.3 billion, an equity ratio of ~66.6%, and a 50%+ total shareholder return policy, the company is a conservatively financed, R&D-led specialty player now pivoting toward healthcare (including animal health) and advanced ICT materials under its Stage III plan to FY3/30. --- ### Company's own description According to its Stage III medium-term plan (May 2026), Nippon Soda describes its mission as creating new value through the power of chemistry, and frames the group as supporting everyday life through chemical products and services across four "material" fields: Agriculture (securing food and sustainable agriculture), Healthcare (healthy life for all people), Environment (toward a resource-recycling society) and ICT (chemical functions for IT devices). The Yuho describes the parent's business as manufacturing, processing and marketing of industrial chemicals, synthetic resins and plastics, dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, veterinary pharmaceuticals and other chemical products. ### Business model and revenue model Nippon Soda's revenue is overwhelmingly product-based (manufactured chemical sales), with secondary service revenues from logistics (warehousing, transport, customs brokerage), engineering/EPC contracts and waste treatment. There is no material subscription revenue. Licensing/active-ingredient supply is embedded in Agri Business: the company supplies proprietary active ingredients (AIs) to global majors and sells formulated products through its own overseas network and partners. The revenue mix by nature (approximation from FY3/26 segment data; company does not disclose a product/service split): *Note: the above split is an analytical characterization; the company does not report revenue by nature.* ### Value-chain position **Agri Business:** fully integrated R&D-type agrochemical originator — chemical synthesis, biological/safety research, formulation research, field evaluation, AI manufacturing (including via Nisso Namhae Agro in Korea) and formulation, registration and global marketing (Stage III plan). The company emphasizes that R&D-type agrochemical originators are largely limited to five overseas majors plus Japanese firms, and that Japanese originators punch above their weight in new AI discovery. **Chemical Materials:** upstream chlor-alkali (caustic soda, chlorine, hydrochloric acid) feeding downstream fine/specialty chemistry (living anionic polymerization for NISSO-PB and VP-POLYMER; cellulose derivatization for HPC; penem API synthesis). **Trading & Logistics:** captive and third-party distribution (Nisso Shoji) and specialized hazardous/pharma logistics (Sanwa Soko, Sanso Unyu). **Engineering:** fine-chemical-type EPC (Nisso Engineering) and civil works (Nisso Kensetsu). **Eco Solutions:** waste treatment, zinc recovery from electric-arc-furnace dust, sulfuric acid recycling (Nisso Metallochemical). ### Customer types and end-markets Customers include global agrochemical majors and distributors, farmers' cooperatives (via channels), generic and innovator pharmaceutical companies and supplement makers (HPC, SSF, faropenem API), copper-clad-laminate (CCL) and semiconductor-materials producers (NISSO-PB, 1,2-SBS, VP-POLYMER), thermal-paper manufacturers (color developers), battery-materials producers, industrial users of commodity chemicals, steelmakers (EAF dust treatment), and public/private construction clients (Engineering). End-markets: crop protection (fruit & vegetables first, expanding to grains), pharmaceuticals/nutraceuticals, semiconductors/electronics (AI servers, HBM, automotive chips), infrastructure, and environmental services. ### Independent characterization Nippon Soda is best understood as two engines and three stabilizers. The engines — Agri Business and specialty Chemical Materials — generated roughly 75% of FY3/26 segment operating profit (JPY 11.2 billion of JPY 14.97 billion before adjustments) on 60% of sales. Agri is cyclical and FX-sensitive (65.7% overseas sales ratio in FY3/26), while Chemical Materials has been structurally re-rated from a ~5–6% margin business to ~15–17% after exiting commodity lines (metallic sodium via Alkaline S.A.S., NISSO HI-CHLON, phenol-based color developers, sodium cyanide). The stabilizers (Trading & Logistics, Engineering, Eco Solutions) are low-growth and modest-margin but add scale and cash. A further, often-overlooked profit pillar is equity-method income (JPY 6.06 billion in FY3/26, chiefly Iharabras in Brazil), which made ordinary profit (JPY 22.99 billion) much larger than operating profit and is highly FX-sensitive (BRL/USD).
