The term ‘LoRa’ denotes long range wireless technology that consumes low power for data transmission for machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT). LoRa is derived from the chirp spread spectrun (CSS) technology and are based on the LoRaWAN protocol that is open for all. LoRaWAN protocol enables connectivity between the smart IoT applications that provide solution to some of the challenging scenarios including energy conversation, depleting natural resources, enhance the efficiency of infrastructure, prevention of disasters, and among others. The frequency bands utilized by LoRa devices varies with regions across the globe. For instance, in US it is 915 MHz band whereas in Europe it is 868 MHz. Similarly, the LoRa technology in Asia operate between the 865 to 867 MHz and 920 to 923 MHz band. Going back to history, the LoRa technology was invented by Cycleo, a French startup that aimed to develop a long range and low power modulation technology. Cycleo was later acquired by Semtech to innovate the technology further and developed a protocol- LoRaWAN that provides capabilities for gas, water, and electricity meters to transmit data. Today, the technology is used in over 178 million devices in over 100 countries that are approaching towards a smarter planet to live in.
