Analytical insights on Smart Gas Meter Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Smart Gas Meter Market market is projected to reach $3.07B by 2024, growing at 6.3% CAGR. The Diaphragm Gas Meters segment holds the largest share.
A significant increase in government roll out of smart gas meters in households and commercial application (relatively controlled) in recent times has been a key growth factor for the smart gas meters market. Recently, numerous countries have endorsed legislation mandating adoption of smart meters as part of broader clean energy initiatives. For example, in the European Union (EU), around 200 million smart meters for electricity and 45 million for gas will be rolled out by 2020. It includes a potential investment of euro 45 billion. Additionally, the EU is expected that nearly 72% of European consumers will have a smart meter for electricity and about 40% will have one for gas by 2020. According to Smart energy outlook, at the end of March 2018, almost 8.6 million smart meters have been installed across Great Britain. This has attracted the interest of numerous multinational smart meter manufacturers. Also in China, severe government mandates, pushed the bulk deployment of smart meters in the recent years, completing the rollout of electric & gas meters in 2016. Hence, such supportive initiatives by various governments upsurge the growth of the market.
A smart meter is the next generation of gas and electricity meter. It measures the total energy used by the consumer in the same way as a traditional meter does. They are used for reading the power consumption in real time, provide accurate billing, and to identify electricity theft. Smart meters consist of digital displays for displaying detailed energy usage, and the cost related to the energy usage. With the detailed energy usage and cost displayed on the digital display, the consumers can understand and act accordingly to conserve the energy. The consumers adjust their consumption patterns when they discover the amount of power used and the cost of operation of the several appliances.
Hence, need for efficient energy usage, and conservation of energy has induced a significant demand in the smart gas meters which enables the customers to be on top of their energy consumption and production.
Major promotion of smart gas meters by the government has resulted in a successful conclusion of the first phase of smart gas meters implementation in many countries. One of the major problem associated with these meters is adaptability or interoperability issues. Most of the smart gas meters are effectively trapped with their energy supplier. The gadgets are supposed to record household energy use every 30 minutes and send this information directly to energy companies, meaning customers pay only for the energy they use. The smart meters installed in the households are not adaptable to the rival supplier’s connections. Switching suppliers would result in the meter being no longer “Smart”, there has been the loss of smart functionality for e.g. remote meter reads, and would revert back to a dumb mode which is no different from the traditional meters we have been using for decades. Lack of significant infrastructure has been a key reason for this problem. This kind of problem may hamper the growth of the market.
Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.
Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.
Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
