Market Snapshot
The global 2-Chloro-5-Chloromethylthiazole (CCMT) market was valued at US$ 18.45 Mn in 2025 and is projected to reach US$ 28.50 Mn by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 6.40% during 2026–2032. The market is expected to add US$ 10.06 Mn in value between 2025 and 2032. Growth is driven by continued demand for the two neonicotinoid insecticides that use CCMT as a key building block, thiamethoxam and clothianidin, particularly in the row-crop and rice economies of Asia Pacific and Latin America, while regulatory restrictions in Europe and North America moderate growth in those regions.
Key Findings
Downstream product: Thiamethoxam accounted for 55.0% of global CCMT demand in 2025 (US$ 10.15 Mn) and is projected to grow at 6.75%, faster than clothianidin (5.96%). Its share is expected to rise to 56.3% by 2032.
Purity: The 98% & Above grade represented 80.0% of the market in 2025 and is expected to grow at 6.74%, compared with 4.96% for the Below 98% grade, reflecting the purity requirements of technical-grade active ingredient synthesis.
Regions: Asia Pacific dominated the market with a 78.0% share in 2025 (US$ 14.39 Mn). The Middle East & Africa (7.67%) and Latin America (7.12%) are projected to be the fastest-growing regions, while Europe is the slowest (4.76%).
Countries: China (US$ 8.63 Mn), India (US$ 3.02 Mn), Japan (US$ 0.863 Mn) were the three largest country markets in 2025. Among individually reported countries, the UAE is projected to record the highest CAGR (8.31%), from a small base.
Regulation: The main restraint is regulatory pressure on neonicotinoids, including the EU ban on outdoor use (2018), the EU MRL reductions applying from March 2026, U.S. state-level restrictions on treated seed, and the re-evaluation process in Brazil.
Supply: CCMT supply is concentrated in China, where a small number of producers serve domestic thiamethoxam and clothianidin manufacturers as well as importers in India and elsewhere.
Analyst Perspective
CCMT is a single-purpose market in commercial terms: its value is tied to the production volumes of thiamethoxam and clothianidin. The forecast therefore reflects a balance between steady agricultural demand for these insecticides in Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa, and a regulatory environment that has removed or is narrowing their use in Europe and parts of North America. The steady shift toward higher-purity material, and the growth of thiamethoxam relative to clothianidin, are the two segment trends that most shape the market's composition over the forecast period.
The 2-Chloro-5-Chloromethylthiazole Market market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2022 to 2032.

View Subscription PlansProduct Overview
2-Chloro-5-Chloromethylthiazole is a heterocyclic organochlorine compound that provides the chlorothiazolylmethyl group found in the second-generation (thianicotinyl) neonicotinoids. It reacts through its chloromethyl group with nitroimino-bearing heterocycles or nitroguanidine derivatives to form thiamethoxam and clothianidin. CCMT is typically supplied as a light yellow crystalline solid or melt with a low melting point, and commercial grades are commonly specified at an assay of 98% or higher.
Production Process
Commercial routes to CCMT start from three-carbon chlorinated feedstocks. The most widely described routes convert dichloropropenes or allyl chloride derivatives into chloropropenyl isothiocyanates by reaction with a thiocyanate salt, followed by chlorination and cyclisation, which forms the thiazole ring and introduces the 2-chloro substituent. The crude product is then purified, typically by vacuum distillation or crystallisation, to reach commercial purity.
The process involves chlorine gas, chlorinated solvents and sulphur-containing by-products, so environmental compliance and waste treatment make up a significant share of production cost. Patent activity in China has focused on continuous production processes and cleaner process variants that improve yield and reduce waste, which is relevant to producer cost positions and to achieving higher-purity grades.
Value Chain Analysis
Raw materials: 1,3-dichloropropene or allyl chloride, thiocyanate salts, chlorine and solvents, supplied by the chlor-alkali and basic chemicals industry.
CCMT production: Concentrated in China, with production either sold on the merchant market or consumed captively by integrated neonicotinoid producers.
Active ingredient synthesis: CCMT is coupled with 3-methyl-4-nitroimino-perhydro-1,3,5-oxadiazine to produce thiamethoxam, or with a nitroguanidine-derived intermediate to produce clothianidin. Technical-grade manufacturing takes place mainly in China and India.
Formulation: Technical materials are formulated into seed treatments, water-dispersible granules, suspension concentrates and granules, often in the country of use.
End use: Application by farmers and seed companies in field crops, rice, fruits and vegetables, and in non-crop uses such as turf where permitted.
Downstream Market Context
Thiamethoxam was developed by Ciba-Geigy (now part of Syngenta) and was the world's best-selling insecticide in the early 2010s, with global sales reported at about US$ 1.0–1.2 billion per year between 2011 and 2018. After patent expiry, generic producers in China and India built large capacities. Industry estimates put global thiamethoxam demand at about 20,000–25,000 tonnes per year, stable over a long period, against built Chinese capacity of about 30,000 tonnes and Indian capacity of about 10,500 tonnes in 2023.
Clothianidin was jointly developed by Sumitomo Chemical Takeda Agro Company and Bayer CropScience and is marketed as a seed treatment (for example, under Bayer's Poncho brand in corn) and as a soil and foliar insecticide. Clothianidin is also a metabolite of thiamethoxam, which is why regulators often assess the two substances together.
Pricing Overview
CCMT pricing follows the cycle of the downstream active ingredients. Thiamethoxam prices in China reached a historic low in April 2023 before rebounding in the second half of that year, and the prices of its two main intermediates, CCMT and oxadiazine, were close to their own historic lows at the time. Overcapacity in Chinese thiamethoxam production, the concentration of CCMT supply among a small number of producers, and environmental enforcement that periodically constrains chemical output are the main factors behind price movements.

The CCMT market is moderately concentrated at the production level. Industry sources indicate that three to four leading Chinese companies account for the bulk of merchant supply of CCMT and of oxadiazine, the other key thiamethoxam intermediate, serving both domestic active ingredient producers and importers in India and other countries. Alongside merchant suppliers, several Chinese neonicotinoid producers operate integrated chains in which CCMT is produced and consumed captively for thiamethoxam and clothianidin.
Competition is driven mainly by price, purity and supply reliability. Because thiamethoxam capacity exceeds global demand, buyers have considerable leverage, and producers with integrated operations, efficient processes and established environmental compliance are best placed to maintain margins.
Leading Companies
The companies below were identified through secondary research as active in CCMT production or supply, or in the downstream thiamethoxam and clothianidin value chain. The list is not exhaustive and does not represent a ranking.
Competitive Strategies
Vertical integration: Combining CCMT production with thiamethoxam and clothianidin synthesis to secure intermediate supply and capture margin across the chain.
Process improvement: Adopting continuous and cleaner production processes to raise yields, improve purity and reduce environmental compliance costs.
Quality differentiation: Supplying higher-purity grades with consistent impurity profiles to technical-grade producers serving regulated export markets.
Customer diversification: Expanding sales to active ingredient producers in India and other countries to offset domestic overcapacity.
Threat of new entrants: Low to Moderate; Process know-how, environmental permitting and existing overcapacity deter entry; backward integration by active ingredient producers is the main source of new supply.
Bargaining power of suppliers: Low; Raw materials (chlorinated C3 feedstocks, thiocyanates, chlorine) are commodity chemicals available from multiple suppliers in China.
Bargaining power of buyers: Moderate to High; Buyers are a limited group of thiamethoxam and clothianidin producers; overcapacity in active ingredient production strengthens their price leverage.
Threat of substitutes: Low to Moderate; There is no practical substitute for CCMT in the synthesis of thiamethoxam and clothianidin; substitution risk lies at the active ingredient level.
Competitive rivalry: High; Concentrated supply, overcapacity and price-driven competition among Chinese producers characterise the market.

Analytical insights on 2-Chloro-5-Chloromethylthiazole Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The 2-Chloro-5-Chloromethylthiazole Market market is projected to reach $28.50M by 2032, growing at 6.5% CAGR. The Thiamethoxam segment holds the largest share.
Sustained Demand for Thiamethoxam and Clothianidin in Major Crop Markets
Thiamethoxam and clothianidin remain widely used systemic insecticides against sucking and soil pests in soybean, corn, cotton, rice, sugarcane, vegetables and fruit. In Brazil, India, China and Southeast Asia, where these crops are grown on large acreages and pest pressure is high, the two active ingredients continue to be a core part of crop protection programmes. Every tonne of either active ingredient requires CCMT, so this demand flows directly to the intermediate.
Growth of Seed Treatment Applications
Seed treatment is one of the main use patterns for both active ingredients. It provides early-season protection with relatively low quantities of active ingredient per hectare, and its use has grown in step with the adoption of commercial hybrid and high-value seed in Latin America and Asia.
Generic Production Capacity in China and India
Following patent expiry, a large base of generic thiamethoxam and clothianidin producers developed in China and India. This capacity has lowered the cost of the active ingredients, widened their use in price-sensitive markets, and created a broad customer base for CCMT producers, including Indian manufacturers that import CCMT from China.
Rising Purity Requirements
Registration specifications for technical-grade active ingredients set minimum purity levels and limits on relevant impurities. Producers therefore prefer higher-purity CCMT, which improves downstream yields and reduces purification costs. This is reflected in the faster growth of the 98% & Above segment (6.74% CAGR) relative to the Below 98% segment (4.96%).
Backward Integration by Active Ingredient Producers
Producers of thiamethoxam and clothianidin outside China, particularly in India, rely on imported CCMT. Building domestic CCMT capability would reduce supply-chain risk, and creates opportunities for process technology providers and intermediate manufacturers.
Expanding Agriculture in Emerging Markets
Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are projected to grow at 7.12% and 7.67% respectively, above the global average. Commercialisation of agriculture, expanding input distribution networks and rising use of seed treatments in these regions offer growth opportunities for CCMT-derived products.
Process Innovation
Continuous production processes and cleaner synthesis routes described in recent patent literature can improve yields, reduce waste and lower the cost of high-purity CCMT. Producers that adopt these processes can strengthen their position in the faster-growing 98% & Above segment.
Regulatory Restrictions on Neonicotinoids
Concerns about the effects of neonicotinoids on bees and other pollinators have led to significant restrictions. The EU banned outdoor uses of thiamethoxam and clothianidin in 2018, and neither substance is approved in the EU any longer. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/334 lowered EU maximum residue levels for both substances with effect from 7 March 2026, extending the impact to agricultural exporters supplying the EU. In the U.S., EPA registration review is ongoing and state laws in New York and Vermont restrict neonicotinoid-treated seed. In Brazil, Ibama's re-evaluations and a September 2026 court ruling ordering their full implementation create uncertainty in the largest thiamethoxam market.
Overcapacity and Price Pressure
Built capacity for thiamethoxam in China and India exceeds global demand by a wide margin, and utilisation rates have been low. This keeps prices for the active ingredient, and in turn for CCMT, under pressure and limits margins for non-integrated intermediate producers.
Environmental Compliance Costs
CCMT production uses chlorination chemistry and generates chlorinated and sulphur-containing waste streams. Stricter environmental enforcement in China's chemical parks raises operating costs and has periodically disrupted supply, which favours larger producers with established waste treatment facilities.
Supply concentration: Dependence on a small number of Chinese producers exposes buyers to disruption from environmental inspections, plant incidents or trade measures.
Regulatory uncertainty: Decisions in Brazil, the U.S. and other major markets could restrict use of the downstream active ingredients at short notice.
Substitution: Newer insecticide classes, such as diamides and sulfoximines, and biological products compete with neonicotinoids in several crop–pest combinations.
Hazardous material handling: CCMT is a reactive chlorinated intermediate that requires careful handling, packaging and transport.
The share of thiamethoxam in CCMT demand is rising, from 54.3% in 2022 to 56.3% projected for 2032.
Demand is shifting toward higher-purity grades, with the 98% & Above share rising from 79.1% in 2022 to 81.8% in 2032.
Integrated producers that make CCMT and convert it captively into active ingredients are strengthening their cost position.
Residue limits in importing markets, particularly the EU, increasingly influence how neonicotinoids are used on export crops in producing countries.
Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.
Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.
Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.

Bayer is a German life-science group with three businesses: Crop Science, Pharmaceuticals and Consumer Health. It is the world's largest combined seed, trait and crop-protection supplier, a mid-sized prescription-drug maker, and a top-five self-care company. Fiscal 2025 sales were EUR 45.6 billion. The 2018 purchase of Monsanto brought leading corn and soybean genetics but also glyphosate and PCB litigation, which has consumed well over EUR 10 billion in settlements and produced net losses in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Under CEO Bill Anderson the company has cut management layers, held the dividend at the legal minimum, and concentrated on four priorities: rebuilding the pharma pipeline, containing litigation, reducing debt and improving crop profitability. In 2026 a 7–2 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on federal pre-emption and a proposed USD 7.25 billion class settlement moved the litigation closer to resolution, though the settlement still awaits final court approval. --- **Company's own description.** Bayer describes itself as a global enterprise with core competencies in the life-science fields of health care and nutrition, operating under the mission "Health for all, Hunger for none" (Annual Report 2025; press boilerplate 2026). Bayer AG is a holding company; operations sit in subsidiaries worldwide. In fiscal 2025 the Group had about 88,000 employees, sales of EUR 45.6 billion and R&D expenses of EUR 5.8 billion. **Independent characterisation.** Bayer is best understood as three distinct businesses sharing a balance sheet, a brand and a legal liability. Crop Science (47 percent of FY2025 sales) is an input supplier to farmers. It earns money from proprietary seed and biotech traits, from chemical and biological crop protection, and to a small extent from digital farming subscriptions. Seed and trait revenue carries royalty-like economics: Bayer licenses traits to other seed companies, and two licensing settlements with Corteva lifted results in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026. The business is strongly seasonal, with Northern Hemisphere sales concentrated in the first half and Latin American sales in the second. Pharmaceuticals (39 percent of sales) discovers, develops and sells prescription medicines, concentrated in cardiovascular and renal disease, oncology, women's health and ophthalmology, plus a radiology unit selling contrast agents and injector hardware. Revenue is almost entirely product sales, with some licence income (for example U.S. Xarelto royalties from Johnson & Johnson, and Eylea outside the United States under a collaboration with Regeneron). The division is in the middle of a patent transition: Xarelto and Eylea are declining while Nubeqa and Kerendia are growing quickly. Consumer Health (13 percent of sales) sells non-prescription brands through pharmacies, mass retail and e-commerce. It is a branded consumer-goods model with stable margins and low capital intensity. **Revenue model mix.** Bayer does not disclose a product/service/licensing split. On the evidence of the Annual Report 2025, the large majority of revenue is product sales; licensing income is embedded in Crop Science seed and trait lines and in Pharmaceuticals; subscription revenue (Climate FieldView, radiology software) is immaterial at Group level. An exact percentage split is not publicly disclosed. **Value-chain position.** Bayer is a research-based originator and manufacturer. It owns discovery, development, active-ingredient and finished-product manufacturing, and commercial organisations, and sells through distributors, retailers, wholesalers, hospitals and pharmacies rather than directly to end users in most markets. **Customers and end markets.** Farmers, agricultural retailers and distributors, and seed licensees (Crop Science); wholesalers, hospitals, physicians, pharmacy chains, governments and payers (Pharmaceuticals); pharmacies, supermarkets, drugstores and online retailers (Consumer Health).
DuPont de Nemours today is a focused, roughly USD 7 bn-revenue multi-industry company. It is no longer the diversified chemical conglomerate of its heritage. After a decade of portfolio surgery, the company consists of two segments: **Healthcare & Water Technologies (about 47% of FY2025 sales):** Tyvek® medical packaging and protective garments, specialty medical device components (Spectrum, Donatelle), and the FilmTec™ / Amberlite™ water purification franchise. **Diversified Industrials (about 53%):** Building envelope products (Tyvek® house wrap, Styrofoam™, Corian®) and engineered industrial technologies (Molykote®, Vespel®, Betaseal™/Betaforce™ adhesives, Cyrel® printing plates). The company earns a premium-specialty margin profile: operating EBITDA margin was 23.8% in FY2025, with guidance of about 24.5% for FY2026. Management targets 3–4% organic growth, 150–200 bps of margin expansion and 8–10% adjusted EPS CAGR through 2028, supported by a lightly levered BBB+/Baa1 balance sheet. The principal overhang is legacy PFAS liability, shared with Chemours, Corteva and Qnity under contractual arrangements. The principal opportunity is a cleaner, higher-growth healthcare/water mix and capital redeployment. --- **Company's own description (FY2025 10-K, Item 1).** DuPont describes itself as a leading provider of advanced solutions that improve everyday life across healthcare, water, construction and industrial markets. It emphasizes helping customers advance their technology pipelines, from clean water to medical packaging that enhances safety and performance. It names its competitive strengths as: - proprietary product and process technologies; - robust application-development pipelines; - well-known brands; - customer intimacy; - global manufacturing and local service capability. **Independent characterization.** DuPont is now best understood as a specialty engineered-materials and components company with four businesses of roughly comparable scale: **Business model and revenue model.** - Revenue is overwhelmingly product sales: materials, components, membranes, resins, garments and plates. Some engineered systems and modules are sold in Water. - There is no material subscription or licensing revenue. Trade secrets may be licensed occasionally (10-K, Intellectual Property). - The contract manufacturing and design services of Spectrum and Donatelle (medical devices) add a design-in / build-to-print services element, but are recognized as product revenue. - Seasonality: North American Building Technologies demand peaks in Q2–Q3. **Value-chain position.** DuPont sits mid-stream as a Tier-1/Tier-2 supplier. It converts purchased raw materials (polyolefins, specialty monomers, resins, silicones, polymers) into engineered materials, membranes and components. These are specified into customers' finished products: medical devices, sterile packaging, water plants, building envelopes, aircraft, vehicles and print packaging. **Customer types.** - Medical device OEMs and sterile packaging converters - Biopharma manufacturers - Industrial end users and EPC/OEM water-system integrators - Municipalities and desalination operators (via integrators) - Builders, contractors and distributors (e.g., Corian® distribution through Hallmark and Parksite) - Automotive and EV OEMs and Tier-1s - Aerospace OEMs - Printing and packaging converters Most products are sold through DuPont's own sales organization, with distributors used for some lines (10-K, Distribution). **End markets.** Healthcare (medical devices, packaging, biopharma, PPE), water (industrial, municipal/desalination, life sciences, microelectronics UPW), construction (residential, non-residential, repair/remodel) and industrial (aerospace, automotive/EV, printing and packaging, general industrial).
Nippon Soda is a mid-cap, diversified Japanese chemical group founded in 1920 as a chlor-alkali producer and progressively re-shaped into a portfolio anchored by two high-value franchises: research-based crop protection (Agri Business, 35% of FY3/26 sales) and specialty "Chemical Materials" (25%), complemented by lower-margin but stable trading/logistics, plant engineering and environmental-recycling businesses. Its crown jewels are niche, high-barrier products in which it holds globally relevant positions — the pharmaceutical excipient NISSO HPC (hydroxypropyl cellulose), liquid polybutadiene NISSO-PB for AI-server copper-clad laminates, KrF photoresist polymer VP-POLYMER, and proprietary agrochemicals such as Mospilan (acetamiprid) and Topsin-M. With FY3/26 net sales of JPY 152.1 billion, record net profit of JPY 18.3 billion, an equity ratio of ~66.6%, and a 50%+ total shareholder return policy, the company is a conservatively financed, R&D-led specialty player now pivoting toward healthcare (including animal health) and advanced ICT materials under its Stage III plan to FY3/30. --- ### Company's own description According to its Stage III medium-term plan (May 2026), Nippon Soda describes its mission as creating new value through the power of chemistry, and frames the group as supporting everyday life through chemical products and services across four "material" fields: Agriculture (securing food and sustainable agriculture), Healthcare (healthy life for all people), Environment (toward a resource-recycling society) and ICT (chemical functions for IT devices). The Yuho describes the parent's business as manufacturing, processing and marketing of industrial chemicals, synthetic resins and plastics, dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, veterinary pharmaceuticals and other chemical products. ### Business model and revenue model Nippon Soda's revenue is overwhelmingly product-based (manufactured chemical sales), with secondary service revenues from logistics (warehousing, transport, customs brokerage), engineering/EPC contracts and waste treatment. There is no material subscription revenue. Licensing/active-ingredient supply is embedded in Agri Business: the company supplies proprietary active ingredients (AIs) to global majors and sells formulated products through its own overseas network and partners. The revenue mix by nature (approximation from FY3/26 segment data; company does not disclose a product/service split): *Note: the above split is an analytical characterization; the company does not report revenue by nature.* ### Value-chain position **Agri Business:** fully integrated R&D-type agrochemical originator — chemical synthesis, biological/safety research, formulation research, field evaluation, AI manufacturing (including via Nisso Namhae Agro in Korea) and formulation, registration and global marketing (Stage III plan). The company emphasizes that R&D-type agrochemical originators are largely limited to five overseas majors plus Japanese firms, and that Japanese originators punch above their weight in new AI discovery. **Chemical Materials:** upstream chlor-alkali (caustic soda, chlorine, hydrochloric acid) feeding downstream fine/specialty chemistry (living anionic polymerization for NISSO-PB and VP-POLYMER; cellulose derivatization for HPC; penem API synthesis). **Trading & Logistics:** captive and third-party distribution (Nisso Shoji) and specialized hazardous/pharma logistics (Sanwa Soko, Sanso Unyu). **Engineering:** fine-chemical-type EPC (Nisso Engineering) and civil works (Nisso Kensetsu). **Eco Solutions:** waste treatment, zinc recovery from electric-arc-furnace dust, sulfuric acid recycling (Nisso Metallochemical). ### Customer types and end-markets Customers include global agrochemical majors and distributors, farmers' cooperatives (via channels), generic and innovator pharmaceutical companies and supplement makers (HPC, SSF, faropenem API), copper-clad-laminate (CCL) and semiconductor-materials producers (NISSO-PB, 1,2-SBS, VP-POLYMER), thermal-paper manufacturers (color developers), battery-materials producers, industrial users of commodity chemicals, steelmakers (EAF dust treatment), and public/private construction clients (Engineering). End-markets: crop protection (fruit & vegetables first, expanding to grains), pharmaceuticals/nutraceuticals, semiconductors/electronics (AI servers, HBM, automotive chips), infrastructure, and environmental services. ### Independent characterization Nippon Soda is best understood as two engines and three stabilizers. The engines — Agri Business and specialty Chemical Materials — generated roughly 75% of FY3/26 segment operating profit (JPY 11.2 billion of JPY 14.97 billion before adjustments) on 60% of sales. Agri is cyclical and FX-sensitive (65.7% overseas sales ratio in FY3/26), while Chemical Materials has been structurally re-rated from a ~5–6% margin business to ~15–17% after exiting commodity lines (metallic sodium via Alkaline S.A.S., NISSO HI-CHLON, phenol-based color developers, sodium cyanide). The stabilizers (Trading & Logistics, Engineering, Eco Solutions) are low-growth and modest-margin but add scale and cash. A further, often-overlooked profit pillar is equity-method income (JPY 6.06 billion in FY3/26, chiefly Iharabras in Brazil), which made ordinary profit (JPY 22.99 billion) much larger than operating profit and is highly FX-sensitive (BRL/USD).
RPM International is a holding company for more than a dozen semi-autonomous specialty-chemicals franchises. These businesses make coatings, sealants, roofing, concrete admixtures, flooring, fireproofing and building-envelope systems, mostly for maintenance, repair and restoration rather than new construction. Its brand portfolio is unusually deep for a USD 7.9 billion company: Rust-Oleum, DAP, Zinsser, Varathane and The Pink Stuff on the consumer side; Tremco, Euclid, Dryvit, Nudura, Kalzip, Stonhard, Carboline and Fibergrate on the professional side. Each brand holds a leading position in a niche that larger diversified coatings groups do not dominate. Since 2018 RPM has run successive operational-improvement programs (MAP to Growth, MAP 2025, and now "MAP 3.0"). These have lifted gross margin from about 36% (FY2022) to about 41% (FY2026) and moved the group from a loose federation toward a centrally coordinated operating company. RPM is a disciplined, dividend-growing compounder with 52 consecutive annual dividend increases. Its growth vectors are engineered building systems, emerging markets (the "Platform" model) and bolt-on M&A. --- ### Company's own description (FY2026 Form 10-K, Item 1) RPM describes itself as follows: its subsidiaries manufacture, market and sell specialty chemical product lines, including high-quality specialty paints, infrastructure rehab and repair products, protective coatings, roofing systems, sealants and adhesives. These products focus on the maintenance and improvement needs of the construction, industrial, specialty and consumer markets. Footprint as of 31 May 2026: - Products marketed in about 167 countries and territories. - Manufacturing in about 120 locations across 22 countries. - About 31% of sales generated internationally: foreign operations 29.8% of net sales, plus direct U.S. exports of 0.9%. The press-release boilerplate calls RPM "a world leader in specialty coatings, sealants, building materials and related services." ### Business model RPM's model has four defining features. - **Decentralised entrepreneurial structure, becoming more integrated.** The founder's philosophy, still quoted in the 2026 proxy, is: "Hire the best people you can find. Create an atmosphere that will keep them. Then let them do their jobs." Operating companies historically kept their own brands, sales forces and ERP systems. The MAP programs are deliberately centralising procurement, manufacturing, accounting and IT. The stated goal is to consolidate more than 75 ERP systems to one platform per segment (Q4 FY2026 8-K). **Repair and maintenance bias:** Much of the portfolio serves existing assets: roof restoration, re-cover, concrete repair, corrosion control, rust prevention and DIY touch-up. That demand is less cyclical than new-build construction. The FY2026 10-K notes that re-roofing has historically accounted for over three-quarters of U.S. roofing demand. **Systems and turnkey selling:** In CPG and PCG, RPM increasingly sells integrated systems (the "Power of One" building envelope) and supply-and-apply turnkey services. Examples include Stonhard flooring installation and Weatherproofing Technologies roofing services. This captures more of each construction project's spend. **Bolt-on M&A plus organic growth:** RPM completed six acquisitions in each of FY2025 and FY2026 (FY2026 10-K Note F). ### Revenue model mix RPM does not disclose a product versus service versus licensing split. From filings, the mix is: ### Value-chain position RPM is a formulator and brand owner, positioned downstream of commodity chemical producers. It buys petroleum-derived resins, solvents, pigments, minerals, metals and packaging (FY2026 10-K, Raw Materials). It is selectively backward-integrated: RPM cites expanding in-house raw material production, and Arnette Polymers makes amine curing agents and epoxy intermediates. Channels downstream include: - Mass merchants and home centres, where the single largest Consumer customer was 20% of Consumer sales in FY2026. - Hardware and paint stores. - Distributors. - Contractors and specifiers. - Direct sales to industrial plant owners, public institutions and infrastructure agencies. ### Independent characterisation RPM is best understood as a portfolio of niche category leaders with a structural margin-improvement story layered on top. The professional segments (CPG and PCG) are about 66% of sales and supply the growth. In FY2026 they posted record results driven by high-performance buildings, data centres, infrastructure, fireproofing and concrete admixtures. In Q1 FY2027, emerging-market regions grew more than 20%. The Consumer segment is about 34% of sales. It is a cash-generative but volume-challenged DIY business. Organic Consumer sales fell 0.8% in Q4 FY2026 and 4.7% in Q2 FY2026. They recovered to +5.2% in Q1 FY2027 on shelf-space wins and pricing. The equity debate therefore centres on three questions: 1. Can MAP savings and pricing protect margins against renewed raw-material inflation linked to the Middle East conflict? 2. Is the Q1 FY2027 CPG slowdown temporary? 3. Will the 9 November 2026 investor day credibly frame the next margin plan?
