Market Overview
The Global Methionine Hydroxy Analog Calcium Salt Market was valued at USD 35.64 Million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 47.77 Million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 4.27% over 2026–2032. The market expanded from USD 31.42 Million in 2022 to USD 34.17 Million in 2024, and is expected to add USD 12.13 Million in absolute value between 2025 and 2032.
Methionine hydroxy analog calcium salt (MHA-Ca) is the dry calcium salt of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid (HMTBa), a precursor that animals convert to L-methionine. It is used as a supplementary methionine source in compound feed and premixes, principally for poultry, where methionine is typically the first-limiting amino acid in maize–soybean meal diets, and secondarily for swine and other species. Demand is shaped by growth in animal protein production, the adoption of reduced crude-protein diets that depend on supplementary amino acids, and the relative price of competing methionine sources, chiefly DL-methionine and liquid HMTBa.

Latin America (CAGR 4.79%) and Middle East & Africa (CAGR 5.92%) are also expected to outpace the global average, whereas North America (CAGR 2.94%) and Europe (CAGR 2.56%) represent mature markets with slower growth.
Competitive Landscape Summary
Supply of methionine hydroxy analogue products is concentrated among a small number of integrated chemical producers that control the acrolein, methyl mercaptan and hydrogen cyanide chemistry required to make HMTBa. Novus International is the principal supplier of a branded dry HMTBa calcium-salt product (MHA® Feed Additive) alongside its liquid ALIMET®. Adisseo is the largest producer of liquid HMTBa (Rhodimet® AT88), and Chinese producers Zhejiang NHU (through a joint venture with Sinopec Zhenhai Refining) and Sichuan Hebang are expanding HMTBa capacity. The market is also shaped by suppliers of competing DL-methionine and L-methionine, including Evonik, Sumitomo Chemical, Unisplendour Tianhua and CJ CheilJedang, whose pricing sets the reference cost per unit of methionine activity against which MHA-Ca is evaluated.
Challenges and Opportunities
The principal challenges are cyclical methionine pricing driven by large capacity additions, continuing debate among nutritionists over the relative bioefficacy of HMTBa compared with DL-methionine, exposure to petrochemical feedstock costs, and animal-disease shocks such as African swine fever and highly pathogenic avian influenza that disrupt feed demand. Opportunities arise from the expansion of commercial poultry production in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa; from low crude-protein feeding programmes that increase reliance on supplementary amino acids; and from the functional attributes of MHA-Ca, including its organic acid character, nitrogen-free composition and dry, premix-compatible form, which suit feed mills that do not operate liquid dosing systems.
Future Outlook
Over 2026–2032 the market is expected to grow steadily at 4.27% per year, with growth increasingly weighted towards emerging poultry-producing economies. Asia Pacific is projected to account for 44.2% of global value in 2032, compared with 42.0% in 2025. Product differentiation is likely to centre on handling characteristics (dust-reduced and granular presentations), consistency of methionine activity, and technical support for formulation, while supply-side competition will continue to be influenced by large-scale methionine capacity additions in China.
The Methionine Hydroxy Analog Calcium Salt Market market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3% from 2022 to 2032.

Methionine hydroxy analog calcium salt (MHA-Ca), also referred to as the calcium salt of DL-2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid or HMTBa-Ca, is a feed-grade nutritional additive used as a source of methionine activity in animal diets. Chemically, it is formed by neutralising HMTBa with a calcium source such as calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide, yielding a dry product that contains roughly 12% calcium. HMTBa carries a hydroxyl group in place of the amino group of methionine; after absorption, it is oxidised and transaminated in animal tissues to L-methionine, which is then used for protein synthesis and as a methyl donor.
Commercial MHA-Ca is supplied as a free-flowing powder or as granular and other dry presentations, commonly with a declared methionine activity in the region of 84%. It is recognised in the United States as generally recognised as safe (GRAS) for use in animal feed under 21 CFR 582.5477 and is authorised in the European Union as a nutritional additive for all animal species under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/8.
Included in the scope:
Feed-grade methionine hydroxy analog calcium salt in powder form and in other dry forms (granular, micro-granulated and similar presentations).
MHA-Ca used in compound feed, premixes, concentrates and supplements for poultry, swine and other livestock species.
Sales by manufacturers and distributors, valued at manufacturer/first-sale level in USD Million.
Excluded from the scope:
Liquid HMTBa (free-acid form, typically about 88% active), DL-methionine, L-methionine and rumen-protected methionine products, except where discussed as competing methionine sources.
HMTBa-based trace mineral chelates (e.g., zinc, copper and manganese HMTBa chelates), where HMTBa is used as a ligand rather than as a methionine source.
Pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and human dietary uses of methionine analogues.

Market Size Estimation
Top-down approach: the overall feed methionine market was estimated from compound feed production and typical methionine inclusion requirements by species. The share of methionine activity supplied in the form of methionine hydroxy analogues, and within it the share supplied as the dry calcium salt, was then applied, using information from company disclosures, trade data and primary interviews.
Bottom-up approach: demand was built up by country from livestock production (broiler, layer and pig output), feed conversion and diet formulation practices, the penetration of MHA-Ca among feed mills and premixers, and average selling prices. Country estimates were aggregated to regional and global totals.
Data triangulation: the results of both approaches were compared and reconciled with supply-side information on production capacity and sales. Where estimates diverged, assumptions were reviewed with industry participants until a consistent set of figures was obtained for each segment, region and country.
Forecasting Methodology
Forecasts for 2026–2032 were developed using a combination of trend analysis and driver-based modelling. Historic growth patterns for 2022–2025 were assessed and adjusted for expected changes in the underlying demand drivers. Factors considered include:
Projected growth in poultry meat, egg and pork production by country.

View Subscription PlansIntroduction
The supply side of the methionine hydroxy analogue market is consolidated. The production of HMTBa, the precursor of MHA-Ca, requires integrated access to acrolein, methyl mercaptan and hydrogen cyanide, and only a handful of companies worldwide operate such facilities at scale. Novus International is the principal supplier of a branded dry HMTBa calcium-salt product, while Adisseo, Zhejiang NHU (through its joint venture with Sinopec Zhenhai Refining) and Sichuan Hebang produce liquid HMTBa that can serve as feedstock for calcium-salt conversion. In addition, a number of smaller Chinese producers and traders supply feed-grade MHA-Ca to the domestic and export markets under China’s national standard GB/T 21034-2007.
Competition is shaped by the broader methionine industry. Feed formulators select among dry MHA-Ca, liquid HMTBa, DL-methionine and L-methionine based on cost per unit of methionine activity, handling infrastructure and assumed bioefficacy. As a result, large DL-methionine producers such as Evonik, Sumitomo Chemical and Unisplendour Tianhua, together with L-methionine producer CJ CheilJedang, exert significant influence on MHA-Ca pricing and volumes. Rivalry is intense and is conducted on price, technical service, product format and supply security, with Chinese capacity additions acting as a key source of competitive pressure.

Analytical insights on Methionine Hydroxy Analog Calcium Salt Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Methionine Hydroxy Analog Calcium Salt Market market is projected to reach $47.77M by 2032, growing at 4.3% CAGR. The Poultry segment holds the largest share.
Demand for MHA-Ca is a function of the volume of compound feed produced for monogastric animals, the methionine requirement built into feed formulations, and the competitiveness of MHA-Ca against other methionine sources. This chapter examines the factors expected to influence the market between 2026 and 2032. The growth factor analysis in Section 4.2 rates five macro-level and five micro-level factors by impact type and assigns impact scores out of 10 for three sub-periods; these scores are analyst assessments based on the secondary and primary research described in Chapter 3, where a higher score indicates a stronger influence on the market.
Growing Global Poultry Production and Animal Protein Demand
Poultry is the most widely consumed meat globally and continues to gain share in total meat consumption owing to its lower cost, short production cycle, efficient feed conversion and absence of religious restrictions. Population growth, urbanisation and rising incomes in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa are expanding demand for chicken meat and eggs, and production is increasingly organised through vertically integrated companies operating commercial feed mills. Because methionine is usually the first-limiting amino acid in maize–soybean meal broiler and layer diets, nearly all commercial poultry feed includes a supplementary methionine source. Every increase in commercial broiler and layer output therefore raises the base demand for methionine activity, including the share supplied as MHA-Ca. This structural link explains why Poultry accounted for 70.0% of the market in 2025 and is expected to grow at 4.50% per year through 2032. National programmes to raise domestic poultry self-sufficiency, such as those in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, add further investment in integrated poultry operations and feed capacity.
Adoption of Reduced Crude-Protein Diets
Feed formulators are progressively lowering dietary crude protein while balancing essential amino acids with supplementary sources. This approach reduces reliance on soybean meal, lowers nitrogen excretion and ammonia emissions, and can improve gut health. Environmental policy has reinforced the trend: nitrogen and ammonia emission controls in the European Union encourage precision amino acid nutrition, and in April 2023 China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued a three-year action plan to reduce and substitute soybean meal in feed, promoting low-protein diets supplemented with synthetic amino acids. As crude protein is reduced, the inclusion rate of supplementary methionine rises, increasing demand for all methionine sources, including MHA-Ca. Low-protein formulation also increases the value of accurate dosing and consistent methionine activity, which favours established suppliers with technical service capability.
Restrictions on Antibiotic Growth Promoters and Focus on Gut Health
The European Union banned antibiotics as growth promoters in feed from 2006, and China prohibited growth-promoting antibiotics in commercial feed from 2020 under MARA Announcement No. 194. Similar restrictions and voluntary antibiotic-free programmes have spread across other markets. These changes have increased interest in nutritional strategies that support gut integrity and performance without antibiotics. HMTBa is an organic acid, and suppliers position HMTBa-based products as contributing antimicrobial and antioxidant benefits in addition to methionine activity. MHA-Ca additionally supplies calcium in an organic form and is nitrogen-free. These attributes allow suppliers to differentiate MHA-Ca on functional value rather than on price per unit of methionine alone, supporting its use in premium and antibiotic-free production systems.
Expansion of Commercial Feed Milling in Emerging Markets
The shift from backyard to commercial livestock production in South and Southeast Asia, Africa and parts of Latin America is increasing the volume of industrially produced compound feed. Many of the new and mid-sized feed mills and premix plants in these markets are designed around dry ingredient handling and lack the storage tanks, heated lines and spray systems required to dose liquid HMTBa. For these operations, a dry calcium-salt form of HMTBa can be weighed and blended with existing equipment, providing a convenient alternative to liquid products. This dynamic underpins faster growth in India (CAGR 6.82%), Saudi Arabia (CAGR 7.43%) and the UAE (CAGR 6.57%) than in mature markets.
Growth in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa
India, Southeast Asian economies, the Gulf states and sub-Saharan Africa are among the fastest-growing poultry markets. In this report, India is projected to grow at 6.82% and Middle East & Africa at 5.92% over 2026–2032. Suppliers that establish distribution partnerships with local premixers and integrators, and that provide formulation support, are positioned to capture this incremental demand.
Dust-Reduced and Granular Product Formats
Feed mills are paying closer attention to occupational dust exposure, flowability and segregation in premixes. Granular and other non-powder forms of MHA-Ca address these concerns and are reflected in the faster growth of the Others physical form segment (CAGR 5.48%) compared with Powder (CAGR 4.13%). Product development in coated, granulated and blended formats offers suppliers a route to differentiation and improved pricing.
Applications Beyond Poultry
Research on the bioavailability of HMTBa calcium salt in nursery pigs, together with interest in methionine nutrition for aquaculture and ruminants, provides scope to broaden usage beyond poultry. The Swine & Others segment is projected to grow from USD 10.69 Million in 2025 to USD 13.83 Million in 2032, and targeted technical programmes for swine and other species could support stronger penetration.
Competition from DL-Methionine and Cyclical Methionine Pricing
DL-methionine is the dominant form of supplementary methionine worldwide and is produced at very large scale by Evonik, Adisseo, Sumitomo Chemical and several Chinese producers. Substantial capacity additions, particularly in China, have historically produced periods of oversupply and steep price declines, which compress margins across all methionine sources. Because feed formulators compare sources on cost per unit of methionine activity, low DL-methionine prices can lead mills to shift volumes away from MHA-Ca. Price increases announced by major producers in 2026 illustrate the cyclical nature of the market, and such cycles make demand for any single methionine form sensitive to relative pricing.
Debate over Relative Bioefficacy
The relative bioefficacy of HMTBa products compared with DL-methionine has been debated in animal nutrition research for several decades, with published estimates varying by study design, species and response criteria. In its assessment of a product combining HMTBa and its calcium salt, EFSA concluded that the additive is an effective source of methionine for non-ruminant species but noted that HMTBa may be less bioefficacious than DL-methionine. Uncertainty over the appropriate replacement ratio can lead conservative formulators to favour DL-methionine or to apply cautious matrix values to MHA-Ca, which limits its competitiveness in price-sensitive markets.
Feedstock and Production Cost Exposure
HMTBa production depends on petrochemical intermediates, including propylene-derived acrolein, methanol-derived methyl mercaptan, hydrogen cyanide and sulfuric acid, together with lime for calcium-salt conversion. These inputs are hazardous and require integrated, capital-intensive facilities. Fluctuations in energy and petrochemical prices, and the cost of complying with process-safety and environmental regulations, can raise production costs and limit the ability of MHA-Ca suppliers to compete on price.
Capacity Build-Out of HMTBa in China
Since 2022, Chinese producers have added significant liquid methionine (HMTBa) capacity, including Adisseo’s 180,000 t/yr plant in Nanjing, the 180,000 t/yr joint venture between Zhejiang NHU and Sinopec Zhenhai Refining, which entered trial production in 2025, and Sichuan Hebang’s announced 600,000 t/yr project. Greater availability of HMTBa as a raw material for calcium-salt conversion is likely to increase regional supply of MHA-Ca and intensify price competition.
Sustainability and Carbon Footprint Considerations
Integrators and feed companies are increasingly measuring the environmental footprint of feed ingredients. Amino acid supplementation that allows lower dietary protein can reduce nitrogen excretion and land use associated with soybean meal, while producers are under pressure to document the carbon footprint of their own manufacturing processes. Suppliers able to provide verified environmental data are likely to gain preference in contracts with large integrators and retailers.
Animal Disease Outbreaks
African swine fever has caused major reductions in pig herds in China and Southeast Asia and continues to affect parts of Europe, while highly pathogenic avian influenza has led to large-scale culling of poultry in North America, Europe and Asia. These outbreaks create abrupt swings in feed demand and complicate demand planning for additive suppliers.
Consolidation and Realignment Among Suppliers
Leading suppliers are reorganising their methionine businesses to improve cost competitiveness. Evonik restructured its Animal Nutrition business in 2023, Novus International separated its methionine and specialty operations into two business units in 2025, and Sumitomo Chemical transferred global sales of its methionine to ITOCHU from April 2025. Such realignment points to an increasingly cost-focused competitive environment.
The value chain of the MHA-Ca market extends from petrochemical raw materials to livestock producers. Value is concentrated at the manufacturing stage, where control of the hazardous precursor chemistry and process know-how creates high barriers to entry.
Raw Materials and Inputs
The principal inputs are acrolein (produced by the oxidation of propylene), methyl mercaptan (produced from methanol and hydrogen sulfide), hydrogen cyanide, sulfuric acid and a calcium source such as calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide. Most large HMTBa producers are backward-integrated into one or more of these intermediates, often within petrochemical complexes, to secure supply and manage the handling of toxic materials.
Manufacturing
Acrolein and methyl mercaptan are reacted to form 3-(methylthio)propionaldehyde (MMP), which is converted with hydrogen cyanide into the corresponding cyanohydrin. Hydrolysis of the cyanohydrin with sulfuric acid yields HMTBa. To produce MHA-Ca, HMTBa is neutralised with calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide, and the resulting salt is dried, milled or granulated, and packed. Quality parameters include methionine activity, calcium content, moisture, heavy metals and particle size.
Distribution and Channels
MHA-Ca reaches the market through direct sales to large integrators and compound feed manufacturers, through premix producers who incorporate it into vitamin–mineral–amino acid premixes, and through regional distributors and trading houses serving smaller mills. Technical service, including formulation support and laboratory analysis, is an important part of the commercial offering.
End Users
End users are poultry integrators (broilers, layers, breeders and turkeys), pig producers and other livestock operations, either directly through their in-house feed mills or indirectly through commercial feed purchases.

Evonik is Germany's second-largest listed chemicals group after BASF and one of Europe's broadest pure-play specialty chemicals companies, generating €14.1bn of sales and €1.87bn adjusted EBITDA in FY2025. Since April 2025 it has been organised into two operating segments — Custom Solutions (formulated, application-driven specialties for coatings, personal care, pharma, and industrial additives) and Advanced Technologies (scale- and technology-driven platforms in silica, hydrogen peroxide, high-performance polymers, crosslinkers and animal-nutrition amino acids) — plus an Infrastructure segment (SYNEQT site services, Oxeno C4 chemicals) earmarked for divestment. Its competitive identity rests on deep process know-how, integrated German Verbund sites (Marl, Wesseling, Rheinfelden, Essen, Hanau), and leadership positions in global niches (fumed silica, DL-methionine, PA12, pharma excipients/lipids). The investment case is a transformation story — €400m-plus cost reduction, portfolio pruning, deleveraging — now overlaid by a live takeover approach from BASF and a near-majority foundation shareholder whose stance is pivotal. --- ### Company self-description Evonik describes itself as a global chemical company that goes "beyond chemistry" by combining innovative strength with leading technological expertise, providing customers with a competitive advantage through tailor-made products and solutions — positioning itself as a "superforce for industry" (company boilerplate, press releases 2026; Company Factbook 2026). Its stated strategic pillars (Capital Markets Day, 22 May 2025) are: a differentiated portfolio in two segments, sustainable innovation, a balanced regional footprint (ambition of roughly one-third of sales in each of Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific), and a performance culture. ### Independent characterisation Evonik is a mid-cap, diversified specialty and "semi-specialty" chemicals manufacturer. Roughly 80% of FY2025 sales (€11.5bn of €14.1bn) came from the two core segments; the remaining ~18–19% came from Infrastructure & Other, which bundles low-margin site services and the cyclical C4 (Oxeno) petrochemical chain. The business is overwhelmingly a product business (manufactured chemicals sold B2B under supply contracts, frame agreements and spot), with smaller service/contract components: (i) pharma CDMO and contract manufacturing (Health Care — lipids/LNPs, drug substances, oral drug delivery), (ii) site infrastructure and utility services sold by SYNEQT to ~two dozen third-party companies in the Marl and Wesseling chemical parks, and (iii) licensing/technology (e.g., HPPO hydrogen peroxide technology with partners; catalysts). Subscription revenue is negligible. Precise revenue-model split (product vs service vs licensing) is n/d. ### Value-chain position Evonik sits mid-stream: it buys petrochemical feedstocks (C4 raffinate, propylene, methanol, ammonia, natural gas/energy, silicon metal, sulphur) and converts them into intermediates and formulated specialties sold to formulators and OEMs. Upstream integration is partial (own C4 cracking downstream of refinery/cracker streams at Marl and Antwerp; own HCN and methionine chain in Antwerp, Mobile and Singapore). Downstream, it rarely sells to consumers; its products are ingredients typically <5% of the customer's cost but critical to performance ("small cost share, high value-in-use"), which supports pricing power in the specialty businesses. ### Customer types and end markets Customers include paint and coatings formulators, adhesives and sealants makers, tyre and rubber producers (silica/silanes), cosmetic and household-care brands, pharmaceutical and biotech companies (excipients, lipids, CDMO), animal-feed mills and integrators (methionine), plastics and automotive suppliers (PA12, PEEK), aerospace (ROHACELL foams), pulp & paper, electronics and semiconductors (high-purity silanes/chlorosilanes, H2O2), renewable energy and hydrogen (membranes, catalysts), and biodiesel producers (alkoxide catalysts). End-market exposure is broad: consumer/personal care, health care, food/feed, automotive and mobility, construction, coatings, industrial, energy/agriculture. A precise end-market % split for FY2025 is n/d in sources reviewed.

DuPont de Nemours today is a focused, roughly USD 7 bn-revenue multi-industry company. It is no longer the diversified chemical conglomerate of its heritage. After a decade of portfolio surgery, the company consists of two segments: **Healthcare & Water Technologies (about 47% of FY2025 sales):** Tyvek® medical packaging and protective garments, specialty medical device components (Spectrum, Donatelle), and the FilmTec™ / Amberlite™ water purification franchise. **Diversified Industrials (about 53%):** Building envelope products (Tyvek® house wrap, Styrofoam™, Corian®) and engineered industrial technologies (Molykote®, Vespel®, Betaseal™/Betaforce™ adhesives, Cyrel® printing plates). The company earns a premium-specialty margin profile: operating EBITDA margin was 23.8% in FY2025, with guidance of about 24.5% for FY2026. Management targets 3–4% organic growth, 150–200 bps of margin expansion and 8–10% adjusted EPS CAGR through 2028, supported by a lightly levered BBB+/Baa1 balance sheet. The principal overhang is legacy PFAS liability, shared with Chemours, Corteva and Qnity under contractual arrangements. The principal opportunity is a cleaner, higher-growth healthcare/water mix and capital redeployment. --- **Company's own description (FY2025 10-K, Item 1).** DuPont describes itself as a leading provider of advanced solutions that improve everyday life across healthcare, water, construction and industrial markets. It emphasizes helping customers advance their technology pipelines, from clean water to medical packaging that enhances safety and performance. It names its competitive strengths as: - proprietary product and process technologies; - robust application-development pipelines; - well-known brands; - customer intimacy; - global manufacturing and local service capability. **Independent characterization.** DuPont is now best understood as a specialty engineered-materials and components company with four businesses of roughly comparable scale: **Business model and revenue model.** - Revenue is overwhelmingly product sales: materials, components, membranes, resins, garments and plates. Some engineered systems and modules are sold in Water. - There is no material subscription or licensing revenue. Trade secrets may be licensed occasionally (10-K, Intellectual Property). - The contract manufacturing and design services of Spectrum and Donatelle (medical devices) add a design-in / build-to-print services element, but are recognized as product revenue. - Seasonality: North American Building Technologies demand peaks in Q2–Q3. **Value-chain position.** DuPont sits mid-stream as a Tier-1/Tier-2 supplier. It converts purchased raw materials (polyolefins, specialty monomers, resins, silicones, polymers) into engineered materials, membranes and components. These are specified into customers' finished products: medical devices, sterile packaging, water plants, building envelopes, aircraft, vehicles and print packaging. **Customer types.** - Medical device OEMs and sterile packaging converters - Biopharma manufacturers - Industrial end users and EPC/OEM water-system integrators - Municipalities and desalination operators (via integrators) - Builders, contractors and distributors (e.g., Corian® distribution through Hallmark and Parksite) - Automotive and EV OEMs and Tier-1s - Aerospace OEMs - Printing and packaging converters Most products are sold through DuPont's own sales organization, with distributors used for some lines (10-K, Distribution). **End markets.** Healthcare (medical devices, packaging, biopharma, PPE), water (industrial, municipal/desalination, life sciences, microelectronics UPW), construction (residential, non-residential, repair/remodel) and industrial (aerospace, automotive/EV, printing and packaging, general industrial).
Nippon Soda is a mid-cap, diversified Japanese chemical group founded in 1920 as a chlor-alkali producer and progressively re-shaped into a portfolio anchored by two high-value franchises: research-based crop protection (Agri Business, 35% of FY3/26 sales) and specialty "Chemical Materials" (25%), complemented by lower-margin but stable trading/logistics, plant engineering and environmental-recycling businesses. Its crown jewels are niche, high-barrier products in which it holds globally relevant positions — the pharmaceutical excipient NISSO HPC (hydroxypropyl cellulose), liquid polybutadiene NISSO-PB for AI-server copper-clad laminates, KrF photoresist polymer VP-POLYMER, and proprietary agrochemicals such as Mospilan (acetamiprid) and Topsin-M. With FY3/26 net sales of JPY 152.1 billion, record net profit of JPY 18.3 billion, an equity ratio of ~66.6%, and a 50%+ total shareholder return policy, the company is a conservatively financed, R&D-led specialty player now pivoting toward healthcare (including animal health) and advanced ICT materials under its Stage III plan to FY3/30. --- ### Company's own description According to its Stage III medium-term plan (May 2026), Nippon Soda describes its mission as creating new value through the power of chemistry, and frames the group as supporting everyday life through chemical products and services across four "material" fields: Agriculture (securing food and sustainable agriculture), Healthcare (healthy life for all people), Environment (toward a resource-recycling society) and ICT (chemical functions for IT devices). The Yuho describes the parent's business as manufacturing, processing and marketing of industrial chemicals, synthetic resins and plastics, dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, veterinary pharmaceuticals and other chemical products. ### Business model and revenue model Nippon Soda's revenue is overwhelmingly product-based (manufactured chemical sales), with secondary service revenues from logistics (warehousing, transport, customs brokerage), engineering/EPC contracts and waste treatment. There is no material subscription revenue. Licensing/active-ingredient supply is embedded in Agri Business: the company supplies proprietary active ingredients (AIs) to global majors and sells formulated products through its own overseas network and partners. The revenue mix by nature (approximation from FY3/26 segment data; company does not disclose a product/service split): *Note: the above split is an analytical characterization; the company does not report revenue by nature.* ### Value-chain position **Agri Business:** fully integrated R&D-type agrochemical originator — chemical synthesis, biological/safety research, formulation research, field evaluation, AI manufacturing (including via Nisso Namhae Agro in Korea) and formulation, registration and global marketing (Stage III plan). The company emphasizes that R&D-type agrochemical originators are largely limited to five overseas majors plus Japanese firms, and that Japanese originators punch above their weight in new AI discovery. **Chemical Materials:** upstream chlor-alkali (caustic soda, chlorine, hydrochloric acid) feeding downstream fine/specialty chemistry (living anionic polymerization for NISSO-PB and VP-POLYMER; cellulose derivatization for HPC; penem API synthesis). **Trading & Logistics:** captive and third-party distribution (Nisso Shoji) and specialized hazardous/pharma logistics (Sanwa Soko, Sanso Unyu). **Engineering:** fine-chemical-type EPC (Nisso Engineering) and civil works (Nisso Kensetsu). **Eco Solutions:** waste treatment, zinc recovery from electric-arc-furnace dust, sulfuric acid recycling (Nisso Metallochemical). ### Customer types and end-markets Customers include global agrochemical majors and distributors, farmers' cooperatives (via channels), generic and innovator pharmaceutical companies and supplement makers (HPC, SSF, faropenem API), copper-clad-laminate (CCL) and semiconductor-materials producers (NISSO-PB, 1,2-SBS, VP-POLYMER), thermal-paper manufacturers (color developers), battery-materials producers, industrial users of commodity chemicals, steelmakers (EAF dust treatment), and public/private construction clients (Engineering). End-markets: crop protection (fruit & vegetables first, expanding to grains), pharmaceuticals/nutraceuticals, semiconductors/electronics (AI servers, HBM, automotive chips), infrastructure, and environmental services. ### Independent characterization Nippon Soda is best understood as two engines and three stabilizers. The engines — Agri Business and specialty Chemical Materials — generated roughly 75% of FY3/26 segment operating profit (JPY 11.2 billion of JPY 14.97 billion before adjustments) on 60% of sales. Agri is cyclical and FX-sensitive (65.7% overseas sales ratio in FY3/26), while Chemical Materials has been structurally re-rated from a ~5–6% margin business to ~15–17% after exiting commodity lines (metallic sodium via Alkaline S.A.S., NISSO HI-CHLON, phenol-based color developers, sodium cyanide). The stabilizers (Trading & Logistics, Engineering, Eco Solutions) are low-growth and modest-margin but add scale and cash. A further, often-overlooked profit pillar is equity-method income (JPY 6.06 billion in FY3/26, chiefly Iharabras in Brazil), which made ordinary profit (JPY 22.99 billion) much larger than operating profit and is highly FX-sensitive (BRL/USD).
