Products containing strain WYEC 108 are registered against a broad range of soilborne pathogens, including Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora root rots, Sclerotinia and Verticillium, and against foliar diseases such as Botrytis grey mould, powdery mildew, downy mildew and a range of leaf spots and blights. Labelled crops cover vegetables (brassicas, leafy, bulb, fruiting and cucurbit vegetables), legumes, pome and stone fruit, citrus, berries, grapes, hops, tree nuts, herbs, edible fungi, ornamentals and turfgrass.
The agricultural formulation sold in the U.S. is a soluble powder with a 0-day pre-harvest interval, a 4-hour restricted entry interval, immediate plant-back and a two-year shelf life, and it is listed for organic production by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). It can be applied as a soil drench, through chemigation or as a foliar spray, and it can be tank-mixed with compatible products. These label attributes allow growers to use the product close to harvest and within residue-sensitive export programmes, which is one of the main reasons for its adoption in fruit and vegetable production.
Mode of Action
Streptomyces lydicus protects plants through several mechanisms acting together. After application to soil, growing media or seed, the organism colonises the growing root tips and the rhizosphere, where it competes with pathogens for space and nutrients. It parasitises root decay fungi such as Fusarium and Pythium and produces antifungal metabolites and cell wall-degrading enzymes. Streptomyces species also produce siderophores, which bind iron and limit its availability to pathogens. On foliage, the organism establishes on leaf surfaces and suppresses the development of diseases such as powdery mildew and Botrytis.
Because protection depends on colonisation by a living organism, applications are most effective when made preventively or at the first sign of disease, and they are commonly used in rotation or in tank mixes with other fungicides as part of an integrated disease management programme.

Streptomyces lydicus is a soil-dwelling, filamentous actinobacterium used as the active ingredient in biological fungicides. Commercial products are based mainly on strain WYEC 108, which colonises plant root surfaces and the rhizosphere, competes with pathogenic fungi for space and nutrients, and produces antifungal metabolites and lytic enzymes that act against the cell walls of fungal pathogens. Because the organism grows with the root system, it provides preventive protection against soilborne diseases, and foliar applications are used against several leaf and fruit diseases.

The Streptomyces lydicus market is highly concentrated. Commercial products are based mainly on strain WYEC 108, which was developed by Natural Industries Inc., acquired by Novozymes in 2012 and is now part of Novonesis following the 2024 merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen. Registrations in the U.S., Canada and other markets are held by the Novonesis group, and the products are sold under the Actinovate brand family for agricultural, greenhouse, nursery, turf, lawn and garden and growing-media applications.
Because the active ingredient is concentrated in one company, competition within the market takes place mainly at the distribution level and against other biological and chemical fungicides. Distribution partners such as SipcamAdvan, Valent BioSciences and, from the 2027 season, Rovensa Next have played a central role in reaching growers in the U.S. In the wider biofungicide market, Streptomyces lydicus products compete with Bacillus-based, Trichoderma-based and other Streptomyces-based products supplied by large crop protection and specialist biologicals companies. Over the forecast period, locally developed strains in Asia Pacific and new bioinput frameworks in Latin America may increase the number of suppliers.
Leading Companies
The table below lists the companies active in the Streptomyces lydicus market, either as registrants and manufacturers or as distributors, together with the main suppliers of competing biological fungicides.
Competitive Strategies
Registration breadth: Building multi-crop label coverage and maintaining registrations through re-evaluations, which protects market access and creates barriers for new entrants.
Distribution partnerships: Using exclusive and non-exclusive distribution agreements with crop protection companies to reach growers in specialty crops, turf and greenhouse markets.
Programme-based selling: Positioning biological fungicides within season-long programmes alongside chemical fungicides, biostimulants and inoculants.
Formulation development: Developing granular, growing-media and seed-applied formats to extend use beyond foliar and drench applications.
Threat of new entrants: Low to moderate; Entry requires a proprietary strain, fermentation know-how and country-level registrations, which take several years and significant investment. New bioinput regulatory frameworks and the development of indigenous strains in Asia Pacific could gradually lower these barriers.
Bargaining power of suppliers: Low; Fermentation inputs such as sugars, nitrogen sources and carriers are widely available commodities. Leading producers operate their own fermentation capacity or long-term contract manufacturing.
Bargaining power of buyers: Moderate; Large growers, distributors and retail chains can compare biological and chemical alternatives and negotiate on price, but the limited number of Streptomyces lydicus suppliers restricts buyers' ability to switch within the active ingredient.
Threat of substitutes: High; Growers can choose from synthetic fungicides and from other biological fungicides based on Bacillus, Trichoderma, other Streptomyces species and plant extracts. Product choice is driven by efficacy, cost, label coverage and residue requirements.
Competitive rivalry: Moderate; Rivalry within the Streptomyces lydicus segment is limited by the small number of registrants, but competition for grower spend across the wider biofungicide market is intense and increasing as large companies expand their biological portfolios.

Analytical insights on Streptomyces Lydicus Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.
The Streptomyces Lydicus Market market is projected to reach $320.09M by 2032, growing at 9.7% CAGR. The Water-Soluble Powder segment holds the largest share.
The growth of the Streptomyces lydicus market depends on the interplay of regulatory, agronomic and commercial factors. This chapter describes the main drivers, restraints, opportunities and trends that influence demand over the forecast period.
Residue requirements in fresh produce supply chains
Retailers and importing countries apply strict maximum residue limits, and many retailers set internal limits below the legal thresholds. Microbial fungicides such as Streptomyces lydicus, which carry a 0-day pre-harvest interval and leave no chemical residue of concern, allow growers to protect crops in the final weeks before harvest without risking residue violations. This is particularly relevant for berries, leafy vegetables, tomatoes and grapes, which receive frequent late-season fungicide applications.
Growth of organic and low-input production
The OMRI listing of Streptomyces lydicus products allows their use in certified organic production, where the choice of fungicides is limited. The expansion of organic acreage in North America and Europe, together with national and state programmes promoting natural farming in Asia, widens the addressable grower base.
Regulatory pressure on synthetic fungicides
Several synthetic fungicide active substances have not been renewed in the European Union in recent years, including mancozeb, and policy frameworks in the EU, France, China and Japan aim to reduce chemical pesticide use or risk. As the number of available chemical modes of action declines, biological fungicides are increasingly positioned within integrated disease management programmes.
Fungicide resistance management
Pathogens such as Botrytis cinerea and powdery mildews have developed resistance to several single-site chemical fungicides. Microbial products with multiple modes of action are used as rotation and tank-mix partners to reduce selection pressure and extend the useful life of chemical fungicides.
Expansion of protected cultivation and soilless systems
Greenhouse, nursery and hydroponic systems are exposed to root diseases caused by Pythium, Phytophthora and Fusarium that spread quickly through recirculating water and growing media. Streptomyces lydicus is labelled for use in greenhouse and hydroponic production, and the growth of controlled-environment agriculture in North America, Europe, Asia and the Gulf region supports demand.
Development of new bioinput regulatory frameworks
Dedicated regulatory pathways for biological inputs, such as Brazil's Law No. 15,070/2024, can shorten time to market and reduce the cost of registering microbial fungicides. Similar efforts in other countries create entry opportunities for suppliers with established dossiers.
Combination programmes with biostimulants and other biologicals
Streptomyces lydicus is compatible with many fertiliser and crop protection products and has been combined with micronutrients and humic substances in growing-media products. Bundled programmes that combine disease protection, root health and nutrient uptake offer suppliers a way to differentiate and to increase value per hectare.
Untapped crops and regions
Penetration in Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa remains low relative to the size of fruit, vegetable and ornamental production in these regions. Expansion of registrations, local partnerships and locally developed strains can open these markets.
Turf and amenity uses under pesticide restrictions
Restrictions on synthetic pesticide use in public green spaces, home gardens and other non-agricultural areas, such as France's Labbé law and provincial cosmetic pesticide restrictions in Canada, favour products that qualify as biocontrol agents for turf, landscape and ornamental applications.
Concentrated supply base
Commercial supply of Streptomyces lydicus products is concentrated around a single proprietary strain and a small number of registrants. This limits price competition and product choice, and it makes market availability in each country dependent on the registration and distribution decisions of one or two companies.
Efficacy expectations and application requirements
As a living organism, Streptomyces lydicus works best when applied preventively and when root colonisation can establish before disease pressure peaks. Its performance under high disease pressure is generally less consistent than that of synthetic fungicides, and growers need to adjust application timing, storage and tank-mix practices accordingly. Inconsistent results in the field can slow repeat purchases.
Registration cost and fragmented approval processes
Each country requires its own data package and approval, and in the European Union product authorisations follow the active substance approval at member-state level. The cost and time involved restrict the number of countries in which products are commercialised, particularly in smaller markets in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.
Price sensitivity and limited awareness
In price-sensitive markets and among smallholder growers, the per-hectare cost of biological fungicides compared with generic chemical fungicides, together with limited technical advisory support, constrains adoption.
Consolidation of the biologicals industry
The merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen to form Novonesis in January 2024 and Biobest's acquisition of BioWorks in 2023 illustrate the consolidation of microbial crop protection into larger, better-funded companies with broader portfolios and greater fermentation capacity.
Shifting distribution models
Distribution of Streptomyces lydicus products in the U.S. has moved between exclusive third-party distributors and direct sales. Valent BioSciences took on distribution of the Actinovate range in 2016, Novozymes resumed direct sales ahead of the 2023 season, and in June 2026 Novonesis announced that Rovensa Next will commercialise Actinovate for fruit and vegetable crops in the U.S. from the 2027 growing season.
Integration into programme-based disease management
Growers increasingly use biological fungicides as part of season-long programmes that alternate or combine them with chemical fungicides, rather than as standalone replacements. Suppliers and distributors are supporting this shift with crop-specific programme recommendations.
Research on new Streptomyces strains
Academic research in China and elsewhere continues to characterise new Streptomyces lydicus strains for antifungal activity and plant growth promotion, which may lead to additional products and greater competition over the forecast period.
The Streptomyces lydicus value chain extends from strain development to end use. Value is concentrated in the stages that require proprietary know-how and regulatory investment: strain development, fermentation and formulation, and registration.
2004: U.S. EPA registers S. lydicus WYEC 108 and the end-use product Actinovate Soluble.
2012: Novozymes acquires Natural Industries Inc. (Houston, Texas), the developer of Actinovate, to strengthen its BioAg business.
2015: EU approval of S. lydicus WYEC 108 as an active substance takes effect on 1 January under Regulation (EU) No 917/2014.
2016: Valent BioSciences reaches an agreement with the BioAg Alliance to distribute Actinovate AG, Actinovate L&G, Actinovate SP and Actino-Iron in the U.S. and Canada.
2023: Novozymes resumes direct sales of Actinovate in the U.S. for the 2023 growing season.
2024: Novozymes and Chr. Hansen complete their merger to form Novonesis.
2025: Health Canada's PMRA grants continued registration of S. lydicus WYEC 108 products following re-evaluation (RVD2025-05).
2026: Novonesis and Rovensa Next announce a U.S. distribution agreement covering Actinovate for fruit and vegetable crops from the 2027 season.
Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.
Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.
Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.

Bayer is a German life-science group with three businesses: Crop Science, Pharmaceuticals and Consumer Health. It is the world's largest combined seed, trait and crop-protection supplier, a mid-sized prescription-drug maker, and a top-five self-care company. Fiscal 2025 sales were EUR 45.6 billion. The 2018 purchase of Monsanto brought leading corn and soybean genetics but also glyphosate and PCB litigation, which has consumed well over EUR 10 billion in settlements and produced net losses in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Under CEO Bill Anderson the company has cut management layers, held the dividend at the legal minimum, and concentrated on four priorities: rebuilding the pharma pipeline, containing litigation, reducing debt and improving crop profitability. In 2026 a 7–2 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on federal pre-emption and a proposed USD 7.25 billion class settlement moved the litigation closer to resolution, though the settlement still awaits final court approval. --- **Company's own description.** Bayer describes itself as a global enterprise with core competencies in the life-science fields of health care and nutrition, operating under the mission "Health for all, Hunger for none" (Annual Report 2025; press boilerplate 2026). Bayer AG is a holding company; operations sit in subsidiaries worldwide. In fiscal 2025 the Group had about 88,000 employees, sales of EUR 45.6 billion and R&D expenses of EUR 5.8 billion. **Independent characterisation.** Bayer is best understood as three distinct businesses sharing a balance sheet, a brand and a legal liability. Crop Science (47 percent of FY2025 sales) is an input supplier to farmers. It earns money from proprietary seed and biotech traits, from chemical and biological crop protection, and to a small extent from digital farming subscriptions. Seed and trait revenue carries royalty-like economics: Bayer licenses traits to other seed companies, and two licensing settlements with Corteva lifted results in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026. The business is strongly seasonal, with Northern Hemisphere sales concentrated in the first half and Latin American sales in the second. Pharmaceuticals (39 percent of sales) discovers, develops and sells prescription medicines, concentrated in cardiovascular and renal disease, oncology, women's health and ophthalmology, plus a radiology unit selling contrast agents and injector hardware. Revenue is almost entirely product sales, with some licence income (for example U.S. Xarelto royalties from Johnson & Johnson, and Eylea outside the United States under a collaboration with Regeneron). The division is in the middle of a patent transition: Xarelto and Eylea are declining while Nubeqa and Kerendia are growing quickly. Consumer Health (13 percent of sales) sells non-prescription brands through pharmacies, mass retail and e-commerce. It is a branded consumer-goods model with stable margins and low capital intensity. **Revenue model mix.** Bayer does not disclose a product/service/licensing split. On the evidence of the Annual Report 2025, the large majority of revenue is product sales; licensing income is embedded in Crop Science seed and trait lines and in Pharmaceuticals; subscription revenue (Climate FieldView, radiology software) is immaterial at Group level. An exact percentage split is not publicly disclosed. **Value-chain position.** Bayer is a research-based originator and manufacturer. It owns discovery, development, active-ingredient and finished-product manufacturing, and commercial organisations, and sells through distributors, retailers, wholesalers, hospitals and pharmacies rather than directly to end users in most markets. **Customers and end markets.** Farmers, agricultural retailers and distributors, and seed licensees (Crop Science); wholesalers, hospitals, physicians, pharmacy chains, governments and payers (Pharmaceuticals); pharmacies, supermarkets, drugstores and online retailers (Consumer Health).
