Market Overview
The Global Octofluoropropane Market was valued at USD 193.10 Million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 252.40 Million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 3.82% over the forecast period 2026–2032. The market has expanded steadily from USD 164.36 Million in 2022, and is expected to add USD 59.30 Million in absolute terms between 2025 and 2032. Octafluoropropane (C3F8, also designated PFC-218, R-218 and, in pharmaceutical nomenclature, perflutren) is a fully fluorinated, chemically inert, non-flammable gas whose commercial value is concentrated in two highly specified end uses: plasma etching and chamber cleaning in semiconductor fabrication, and gas-filled microsphere contrast agents for diagnostic ultrasound.
Demand is anchored by the semiconductor industry, where C3F8 is used as a fluorocarbon etchant for silicon dioxide and other dielectric films and as a chamber-cleaning gas for chemical vapour deposition (CVD) tools. Capacity additions for logic, memory and specialty devices across Asia Pacific, the United States and Europe, supported by large public incentive programmes, sustain consumption of high-purity electronic specialty gases. The medical imaging segment, built on perflutren-based ultrasound enhancing agents used in echocardiography and other diagnostic procedures, provides a stable, regulated and less cyclical demand stream. Smaller volumes are consumed in refrigerant blends, intraocular gas tamponade for retinal surgery, dielectric and specialty uses.

Segmentation Summary
The market is analysed by application (Semiconductor Etching; Medical Imaging (Ultrasound Contrast); Others), by purity (5N & Above; Below 5N) and by region (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Middle East & Africa), with country-level coverage of 20 country and sub-regional markets. Semiconductor Etching accounted for USD 115.86 Million in 2025 and Medical Imaging (Ultrasound Contrast) for USD 57.93 Million, while the Others segment stood at USD 19.31 Million. The purity split closely mirrors the application split: the 5N & Above grade, which is required for device-level etching at advanced nodes, generated USD 135.17 Million in 2025, compared with USD 57.93 Million for the Below 5N grade, which serves cleaning, pharmaceutical-grade precursor and industrial uses with less stringent impurity limits.
Competitive Landscape Summary
The market is moderately consolidated. Global industrial gas and electronic materials companies, led by Linde, Air Liquide, Merck KGaA (EMD Electronics) and Nippon Sanso Holdings, dominate supply of electronic-grade C3F8 to leading-edge fabs through broad specialty gas portfolios, long-term contracts and on-site presence at major fab clusters. Resonac and Messer are established challengers with strong fluorine chemistry and high-purity capabilities, while Chinese producers such as PERIC Special Gases and Guangdong Huate Gas are rapidly adding high-purity C3F8 capacity under import-substitution policies. Niche suppliers including TEMC in South Korea, EFC Gases & Advanced Materials in the United States and HaloPolymer in Russia serve specific customer groups and regions. Recent strategic activity has centred on capacity expansion near new fabs, acquisitions in Asian electronics hubs and investment in advanced electronic materials, with competition based on purity, supply security, technical service and price.
Challenges and Opportunities
The principal challenge for the market is regulatory pressure on perfluorocarbons. C3F8 has a 100-year global warming potential of approximately 8,900 under the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report and an atmospheric lifetime of about 2,600 years, which places it within greenhouse gas reporting programmes, the European Union F-gas framework and the scope of the proposed European restriction on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Semiconductor manufacturers have committed to absolute emission reduction targets, encouraging abatement, process optimisation and, in some cleaning applications, substitution with nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) remote plasma cleaning. Supply-side challenges include concentration of fluorspar and hydrogen fluoride feedstock in a limited number of countries, energy-intensive purification and the cost of cylinder logistics and qualification.
Opportunities arise from new fabrication capacity in the United States, Japan, Europe, India and China, where every new fab must qualify local or regional supply of electronic specialty gases. Localisation policies favour suppliers able to build purification, filling and analytical capability close to customers. In healthcare, growing use of contrast-enhanced echocardiography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound in emerging markets broadens demand for pharmaceutical-grade perflutren, while ultra-high-purity grades with tighter metal and moisture specifications command premium pricing.
Future Outlook
Over 2026–2032 the market is expected to grow from USD 201.56 Million to USD 252.40 Million. Growth will remain led by Asia Pacific and by the 5N & Above grade, with semiconductor etching expanding at 4.15% annually compared with 3.38% for medical imaging. Smaller markets in the Middle East & Africa and Latin America will record the highest growth rates from a low base. Suppliers that combine high-purity production, emission-abatement support for customers and regional supply security are best placed to capture the incremental USD 59.30 Million expected over 2025–2032.
The Octofluoropropane Market market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% from 2022 to 2032.

On the demand side, respondents included process engineers and procurement managers at semiconductor fabs and foundries, materials managers at contrast-agent manufacturers, hospital procurement and imaging specialists, and buyers in refrigerant and specialty applications. Objectives included understanding pricing by grade and region, qualification cycles, consumption intensity per wafer start, substitution trends, emissions abatement practices and capacity expansion plans.
Market Size Estimation
Top-down approach: The overall electronic specialty gases and medical contrast-agent markets were used as starting points, and the share attributable to octafluoropropane was derived from product-mix analysis, company disclosures and expert input. The resulting global value was then allocated across applications, purity grades and regions using consumption patterns and installed capacity.
Bottom-up approach: Country-level demand was built from semiconductor wafer capacity and utilisation, estimated C3F8 consumption per unit of capacity, the number of contrast-enhanced ultrasound procedures and associated perflutren usage, and volumes consumed in other applications. Volumes were multiplied by grade- and region-specific average selling prices and aggregated to regional and global totals.
Data triangulation: The results of both approaches were compared and reconciled with supplier revenue analysis, trade data and primary interview inputs. Differences were investigated and resolved to arrive at final estimates that are consistent across segments, regions and countries.
Forecasting Methodology
The forecast was developed using a factor-based model that links demand to its underlying drivers. Factors considered include semiconductor fab capacity additions and utilisation, technology node migration and etch-step intensity, public incentive programmes, emissions regulations and abatement adoption, substitution by alternative etch and cleaning chemistries, growth in echocardiography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound procedures, healthcare spending, average selling price trends by purity grade, feedstock (fluorspar and hydrogen fluoride) availability, and macroeconomic indicators. Historical relationships between these factors and market value were used to project each segment, and the projections were validated with industry experts.

Expansion of Global Semiconductor Fabrication Capacity
Semiconductor manufacturing is the single largest source of demand for octafluoropropane, and the industry is in a period of sustained capacity expansion. Governments have committed unprecedented public funding to domestic chip production: the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 provided about USD 52.7 billion for semiconductor manufacturing, research and workforce development, the European Chips Act that entered into force in September 2023 aims to mobilise more than EUR 43 billion of public and private investment, Japan has subsidised new fabs operated by TSMC's JASM subsidiary in Kumamoto and by Rapidus in Hokkaido, and China launched the third phase of its national integrated circuit investment fund in 2024 with registered capital of RMB 344 billion. Each new fab requires qualified, continuous supply of electronic specialty gases, including fluorocarbon etchants such as C3F8 for dielectric etching and chamber cleaning. Because gas consumption scales with wafer starts and with the number of etch and clean steps, capacity additions translate directly into incremental gas volume. This is reflected in the Semiconductor Etching segment, which is projected to grow from USD 115.86 Million in 2025 to USD 154.97 Million by 2032, at a CAGR of 4.15% over 2026–2032.
Rising Device Complexity and Etch Intensity
The migration to advanced logic nodes, 3D NAND with ever-higher layer counts, and high-bandwidth DRAM used in artificial intelligence accelerators has substantially increased the number of plasma etch and deposition steps per wafer. Dielectric etching of high-aspect-ratio contacts, vias and trenches relies on carefully balanced fluorocarbon chemistries, in which C3F8 is used alongside other perfluorocarbons to control the ratio of fluorine radicals to polymer-forming species and thus selectivity and profile. More deposition steps also increase the frequency of in-situ chamber cleaning, an application in which C3F8 has been adopted as a lower-emission alternative to C2F6 because of its higher dissociation efficiency. At the same time, smaller feature sizes have raised purity requirements, as trace moisture, oxygen, metals and other fluorocarbon impurities can cause yield loss. This favours the 5N & Above grade, which is expected to grow at 4.23% compared with 2.83% for Below 5N material.
Growing Use of Ultrasound Contrast Agents in Cardiovascular Diagnostics
Perflutren-based ultrasound enhancing agents, such as lipid-encapsulated and protein-encapsulated microsphere products approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency, use octafluoropropane as the gas core of microbubbles that strongly reflect ultrasound. They are used to opacify the left ventricle and improve endocardial border delineation in patients with suboptimal echocardiograms, and their use is expanding in contrast-enhanced ultrasound for liver lesion characterisation and other indications. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally, and ageing populations are increasing the volume of echocardiography procedures, particularly in North America, Europe, Japan and China. Contrast echocardiography is radiation-free and less costly than many alternative imaging modalities, supporting its adoption in both hospital and outpatient settings. The Medical Imaging (Ultrasound Contrast) segment is therefore a steady growth contributor, projected to grow from USD 57.93 Million in 2025 to USD 73.45 Million by 2032, at a CAGR of 3.38% over 2026–2032.
Supply-Chain Localisation and Security of Supply
Export restrictions and geopolitical tension have made security of supply for critical semiconductor materials a strategic priority. Japan's 2019 tightening of export controls on fluorinated polyimide, photoresists and hydrogen fluoride to South Korea, which was not fully reversed until 2023, accelerated domestic development of fluorinated electronic materials in Korea. U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductor technology introduced from October 2022, and China's subsequent controls on certain critical minerals, have encouraged chipmakers in all major regions to dual-source and to localise specialty gas supply. This has prompted investments by industrial gas majors and regional producers in purification, filling and analytical facilities close to new fabs in the United States, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, India and Europe. Localisation increases the number of qualified supply points and the inventory held in the system, supports premium pricing for proven high-purity material and creates opportunities for new entrants with competitive fluorination technology.
New Fabs in Emerging Semiconductor Hubs
India's Semiconductor Mission, with incentive outlays approved in 2021 and the first fab and assembly projects approved in Gujarat and Assam since 2023, along with projects in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Mexico, is creating new demand centres that require local electronic gas supply. India is the fastest-growing country market in this study (CAGR 7.23%), and the UAE (CAGR 6.91%) and Saudi Arabia (CAGR 5.78%) are also expanding quickly from a low base. Early-moving suppliers can secure long-term supply agreements and on-site positions.
Ultra-High-Purity and Value-Added Supply Services
Advanced logic and memory fabs are tightening specifications for metals, moisture and fluorocarbon impurities, opening room for 6N-class products, advanced cylinder passivation, real-time analytical certification and bulk specialty gas delivery systems. Suppliers that bundle C3F8 with gas management, abatement support and emissions reporting can differentiate on total cost of ownership and lock in multi-year contracts.
Broader Clinical Use of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound
Growing clinical acceptance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in liver imaging, paediatric applications, vascular imaging and intensive care, together with expansion of echocardiography capacity in China, India, Latin America and the Middle East, offers growth for pharmaceutical-grade perflutren. Suppliers able to meet pharmacopoeial and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements and to support regulatory filings for contrast-agent manufacturers can build durable, high-margin relationships.
Stringent Regulation of High-GWP Perfluorocarbons
C3F8 is a potent and extremely long-lived greenhouse gas. It is reported under national greenhouse gas inventories submitted to the UNFCCC, under facility-level reporting rules such as Subpart I of the U.S. EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program for electronics manufacturing, and is covered by the EU F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573. The universal PFAS restriction proposal submitted to the European Chemicals Agency in 2023 includes fluorinated gases within its scope, creating long-term uncertainty for producers and users in Europe. Compliance requires investment in point-of-use abatement, emission monitoring and reporting, and raises the total cost of using the gas, which may limit growth in some applications and regions.
Substitution by Alternative Chemistries
In chamber cleaning, many fabs have moved to remote plasma cleaning with nitrogen trifluoride, which achieves very high utilisation and low perfluorocarbon emissions. In etching, the choice of fluorocarbon depends on the process, and higher-carbon or unsaturated fluorocarbons such as c-C4F8, C4F6 and C5F8 are frequently preferred for high-selectivity applications. Research into lower-GWP etch gases, including hydrofluoroolefins and fluorinated ethers, could further reduce the role of C3F8 over the long term, constraining growth in the Below 5N grade in particular.
Feedstock Concentration and Cost Volatility
Octafluoropropane production depends on fluorspar and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, as well as on chlorinated or fluorinated hydrocarbon intermediates. Global fluorspar mining is concentrated in a small number of countries, with China accounting for the majority of output, and Chinese export policy, environmental inspections and energy costs have periodically affected availability and pricing. Purification to 5N and above is energy-intensive and requires specialised distillation and analytical capabilities, adding cost and limiting the number of qualified producers.
Challenge: Qualification Barriers and Long Approval Cycles
Qualification of a new gas source at a semiconductor fab can take many months and requires extensive analytical and process testing, while pharmaceutical-grade supply must satisfy drug-master-file and GMP requirements. These barriers protect incumbents but slow the entry of new capacity and can create temporary tightness when demand rises quickly.
Challenge: Cyclicality of Semiconductor Demand
The semiconductor industry is cyclical; memory downturns, such as that experienced in 2023, reduce fab utilisation and gas consumption. Although structural demand from artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and connectivity supports long-term growth, short-term inventory corrections can affect volumes and pricing for electronic-grade C3F8.
Trend: Emission Abatement and Process Optimisation
Semiconductor manufacturers have adopted voluntary and regulatory targets for perfluorocarbon emission reduction, and many have announced net-zero or science-based climate targets. Point-of-use abatement systems, process recipe optimisation and gas recovery are being deployed widely, reducing emissions per unit of gas consumed and allowing continued use of C3F8 in critical processes.
Trend: Regionalisation of Electronic Specialty Gas Production
Industrial gas companies and fluorochemical producers in Japan, Korea and China are expanding electronic gas capacity and building facilities near customer clusters, while Chinese producers are increasing their share of domestic supply as local chipmakers seek domestic qualification. This is reshaping trade flows and competitive dynamics, particularly in Asia Pacific.
The octafluoropropane value chain comprises four principal stages:
Raw materials and inputs: Fluorspar (calcium fluoride) is converted to anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, which, together with hydrocarbon or chlorofluorocarbon intermediates such as propane derivatives or hexafluoropropylene, provides the fluorine and carbon backbone for synthesis. Elemental fluorine and cobalt trifluoride are used in some production routes. Feedstock security and cost are key determinants of producer competitiveness.
Manufacturing and purification: C3F8 is produced by electrochemical fluorination, direct fluorination or catalytic fluorination of partially fluorinated intermediates, followed by multi-stage distillation, adsorption and purification to remove moisture, acids, air gases and other fluorocarbons. Electronic grades are purified to 5N (99.999%) or higher and certified by gas chromatography, FTIR and trace-metal analysis; pharmaceutical grades are produced under GMP-aligned controls.
Distribution and channels: Purified gas is filled into passivated cylinders, ton units and ISO containers. Supply reaches end users directly from producers, through industrial gas majors that purify and repackage gas for semiconductor fabs, and through specialty gas distributors. Logistics must comply with dangerous-goods regulations for compressed gases, and fabs often use bulk specialty gas systems and gas cabinet management services.
End users: Semiconductor fabs, foundries and integrated device manufacturers (etching and chamber cleaning), display and MEMS manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies producing perflutren microsphere contrast agents, ophthalmic device companies supplying intraocular gases, and refrigerant blenders and specialty industrial users.

Nippon Sanso Holdings is Japan's largest industrial-gas company and one of the global "Tier One" industrial-gas majors, operating a pure holding-company structure over four regional gas businesses — Nippon Sanso Corporation (Japan), Nippon Sanso Matheson (United States), Nippon Sanso Euro-Holding (Europe, formerly Nippon Gases, built on the ex-Praxair European business) and an Asia & Oceania platform anchored by Supagas and Coregas in Australia/New Zealand — plus the consumer-products Thermos brand. Roughly 70% of revenue is generated outside Japan. Its earnings model is the classic industrial-gas annuity: on-site and pipeline supply under long-term take-or-pay contracts, bulk liquid and cylinder distribution with high switching costs, and a fast-growing electronics franchise (specialty and electronic-material gases, total gas management, gas equipment). After four years of price-led margin expansion under "NS Vision 2026," management is now pursuing "Next Innovation 2030," targeting ≥17% core margins and ≥8% after-tax ROCE by FYE2030 while remaining controlled by Mitsubishi Chemical. --- ### Company's own description (latest results filing) In its FYE2026 consolidated results (11 May 2026), NSHD describes its operations as conducting gas businesses in Japan and overseas, mainly for customers in the steel, chemical and electronics industries, with production and sales bases for its main products in Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia & Oceania, and separately engaging in the manufacture and sale of housewares such as stainless-steel vacuum bottles. On that basis the group reports five segments: Japan, United States, Europe, Asia & Oceania, and Thermos. For the four gas segments, the company lists as main products and services: oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, acetylene, gas-related equipment, specialty gases (electronic-material gases, pure gases), electronics-related equipment and installation, compound-semiconductor manufacturing equipment, welding and cutting equipment, welding materials, plants and machinery, LPG and related equipment, medical gases (oxygen, nitrous oxide, etc.), medical equipment and stable isotopes. Thermos covers housewares and consumer goods. ### Independent characterisation NSHD is a regionally organised, vertically integrated industrial-gas producer and distributor with three distinct economic engines: 1. **Industrial gases (≈80%+ of profit).** Atmospheric gases (O₂, N₂, Ar) separated in air separation units (ASUs), plus CO₂/dry ice, hydrogen and syngas (HyCO), helium and acetylene. Electricity is the dominant variable cost of ASU production, which is why "price management" (pass-through of energy and inflation) has been the defining earnings driver since FYE2022. Distribution modes follow the industry's three-tier model: (a) on-site/pipeline supply under 10–20-year contracts with minimum-take provisions (steel, chemicals, refining, large fabs); (b) merchant/bulk liquid delivered by cryogenic tanker under multi-year contracts with tank rental; (c) packaged/cylinder gases with cylinder rental, hardgoods (welding consumables and equipment) and retail-style distribution. The packaged channel is particularly prominent in the US (Matheson's ~300-location network) and Australia (Supagas LPG plus Coregas). 2. **Electronics.** Electronic-material (specialty) gases for semiconductor, display and solar manufacturing; ultra-high-purity bulk gases for fabs; "Total Gas Supply Solutions"/Total Gas & Chemical Management services; gas cabinets, purifiers and installation projects (recognised on percentage-of-completion, hence lumpy); and compound-semiconductor deposition equipment. Electronics is a cross-segment business area rather than a reporting segment, and is a top-two strategic priority under Next Innovation 2030. 3. **Thermos (≈2.4% of revenue, ~19.6% segment margin).** A B2C consumer brand (vacuum bottles, mugs, sports bottles, frying pans, lunch boxes, cooler bags, apparel accessories brand "&ONDO"), operated largely in Japan and Asia, with equity-method affiliates contributing ~¥2.7–3.1bn per year. ### Revenue model mix The company does not disclose a product-versus-service-versus-rental split. Qualitatively: gas sales (product) dominate; recurring service-like revenue embedded in gas contracts includes facility fees, cylinder and tank rental; equipment & installation (E&I) is project revenue; homecare/respiratory services (Spain via Oximesa and Nippon Sanso Homecare España) are service revenue; licensing is immaterial. Subscription-style economics are present in the form of fixed facility charges in on-site contracts. ### Value-chain position NSHD sits mid-stream: it designs and builds its own ASUs (group engineering, strengthened by Italian plant-engineering investments Polaris and HYSYTECH), produces gases, owns logistics (tankers, cylinder fleets), and sells to industrial end users. It is also a merchant of LPG in Japan and Australia (purchased product, distributed).
DuPont de Nemours today is a focused, roughly USD 7 bn-revenue multi-industry company. It is no longer the diversified chemical conglomerate of its heritage. After a decade of portfolio surgery, the company consists of two segments: **Healthcare & Water Technologies (about 47% of FY2025 sales):** Tyvek® medical packaging and protective garments, specialty medical device components (Spectrum, Donatelle), and the FilmTec™ / Amberlite™ water purification franchise. **Diversified Industrials (about 53%):** Building envelope products (Tyvek® house wrap, Styrofoam™, Corian®) and engineered industrial technologies (Molykote®, Vespel®, Betaseal™/Betaforce™ adhesives, Cyrel® printing plates). The company earns a premium-specialty margin profile: operating EBITDA margin was 23.8% in FY2025, with guidance of about 24.5% for FY2026. Management targets 3–4% organic growth, 150–200 bps of margin expansion and 8–10% adjusted EPS CAGR through 2028, supported by a lightly levered BBB+/Baa1 balance sheet. The principal overhang is legacy PFAS liability, shared with Chemours, Corteva and Qnity under contractual arrangements. The principal opportunity is a cleaner, higher-growth healthcare/water mix and capital redeployment. --- **Company's own description (FY2025 10-K, Item 1).** DuPont describes itself as a leading provider of advanced solutions that improve everyday life across healthcare, water, construction and industrial markets. It emphasizes helping customers advance their technology pipelines, from clean water to medical packaging that enhances safety and performance. It names its competitive strengths as: - proprietary product and process technologies; - robust application-development pipelines; - well-known brands; - customer intimacy; - global manufacturing and local service capability. **Independent characterization.** DuPont is now best understood as a specialty engineered-materials and components company with four businesses of roughly comparable scale: **Business model and revenue model.** - Revenue is overwhelmingly product sales: materials, components, membranes, resins, garments and plates. Some engineered systems and modules are sold in Water. - There is no material subscription or licensing revenue. Trade secrets may be licensed occasionally (10-K, Intellectual Property). - The contract manufacturing and design services of Spectrum and Donatelle (medical devices) add a design-in / build-to-print services element, but are recognized as product revenue. - Seasonality: North American Building Technologies demand peaks in Q2–Q3. **Value-chain position.** DuPont sits mid-stream as a Tier-1/Tier-2 supplier. It converts purchased raw materials (polyolefins, specialty monomers, resins, silicones, polymers) into engineered materials, membranes and components. These are specified into customers' finished products: medical devices, sterile packaging, water plants, building envelopes, aircraft, vehicles and print packaging. **Customer types.** - Medical device OEMs and sterile packaging converters - Biopharma manufacturers - Industrial end users and EPC/OEM water-system integrators - Municipalities and desalination operators (via integrators) - Builders, contractors and distributors (e.g., Corian® distribution through Hallmark and Parksite) - Automotive and EV OEMs and Tier-1s - Aerospace OEMs - Printing and packaging converters Most products are sold through DuPont's own sales organization, with distributors used for some lines (10-K, Distribution). **End markets.** Healthcare (medical devices, packaging, biopharma, PPE), water (industrial, municipal/desalination, life sciences, microelectronics UPW), construction (residential, non-residential, repair/remodel) and industrial (aerospace, automotive/EV, printing and packaging, general industrial).
