The second reason is that o the free-trials which help consumers in deciding over the products and their brands. In addition, due to technology advancements, consumers have moved towards digital lifestyle, which has led to the increased sale of the product through e-commerce.
Innovations in the product line in addition to a high focus on the R&D sector will be considered a vital opportunity for the manufacturers to increase their market share by attracting more consumers. Consumers go for brands which they can recall and that which connects with their emotions. The cosmetic industry is fragmented, and consumers majorly prefer branded skin and eye care/makeup products over non-branded ones, which pose a challenge for new market players to establish themselves. The new players need capital investment to set up the business and brand positioning their product in a manner that attracts consumer attention and questions their loyalty towards other brands. The counterfeit products of different brands not only affect the actual brands in terms of revenue but also dampen the brand goodwill. It is difficult to identify the difference between a fake product and a genuine one. While the genuine product has a bold and cleaner font, the fake one uses thin and hard to read fonts. Counterfeiters keep the prices lower than the genuine products to make them appear real. Moreover, counterfeit products pose a threat to consumer health. Therefore, increasing presence of counterfeit products is expected to hinder the growth of the global mascara market.
The onset of COVID-19 has resulted in a global crisis. The pandemic, which is impacting numerous countries worldwide, has already influenced the world economy and is expected to produce turmoil and global catastrophe. People's lives have been entirely turned upside down by the COVID-19 outbreak, owing to its growing cases every day. Different industries are affected by COVID-19 differently. Every area of the economy experienced growth after the pandemic. This pandemic has impacted the commodity market in numerous ways. However, various initiatives were taken by the government bodies in various regions worldwide to recover the region from post-pandemic. For instance, in May 2020, the US government invested USD 2.2 trillion in an economic rescue package for US companies, notably the automotive industry, which was most negatively impacted by the pandemic. A few impacts of the outbreak on the mascara market have been discussed below.
The COVID-19 outbreak has influenced the whole production process, from the procurement of raw materials to production, packaging, and distribution. The whole production process for the mascara sector has suffered because of the outbreak. Providing mascara to various manufacturers has been delayed because of lockdown restrictions make it more difficult to transfer the raw materials required to create them. Both domestic and international companies provide the basic materials used to make mascara. Due to the necessity of sealing international borders, low quantities of these mascara were being produced. Delivering manufacturing units to stores has become more challenging for distributors due to lockdown restrictions. Even though there is a huge demand for mascara worldwide, the sectors are all experiencing major shortages.
With lockdown restrictions of many retail stores across the globe, many manufacturers of mascara are expected to move into the online/e-commerce channels. E-commerce channels are proving to be a life saver during these tough times. Individuals are also well accepting this move as they feel safe instead of going out to retail stores to buy mascara and increase the chances of getting infected from coronavirus. This is evident from the fact that many e-commerce channels have witnessed triple-digit growth rates in sales of various cosmetic products. For instance, according to Wantstats analysis, online purchases of personal care and cosmetic products in India decreased by over 70% in April 2020 compared to the same month last year. However, the internet industry quickly picked up steam, with May's online orders rising by about 295 percent from the previous month. Thus, the trend of online purchases of mascara is expected to continue the trend in the upcoming years and the market players are expected to increase their investments in e-commerce sales channels to capitalize on increasing demand. Hence, under the current scenario, mascara manufacturers are expected to have lucrative growth opportunities. Individuals across the globe are also anticipated to perceive online channels to be a safer mode for purchasing mascara for personal use. This is expected to create a long-lasting opportunity for online channels to increase their share of sales in the coming years.
When COVID-19 was originally discovered in March 2020, numerous nations decided to restrict international travel. Therefore, most of the populace was urged to remain inside and conduct business from home. Due to several factors, the sales of mascara demand have become stable.
By combining various chemicals, cosmetic businesses all around the world create various beauty products. Customers buy and utilize these goods to enhance their physical attractiveness or body odor. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the market was expanding due to several variables, including the transition to healthier lifestyles, rising income levels, growing worries over outward appearance, and more. Additionally, to improve client interaction, businesses are now including social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and similar ones in their advertising efforts. Utilizing social media influencers makes it possible to promote products on these channels.
The expansion of the global cosmetics sector has significantly decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic started in early 2020. This is because government-enforced lockdowns caused a labor shortage, which forced cosmetics production facilities to temporarily close. Businesses were additionally compelled to downsize their workforce and introduce work-from-home arrangements, both of which significantly decreased output. The pandemic also led to the closure of numerous shops that sold cosmetics and other beauty supplies.
The fashion industry was severely impacted, much like or even worse than during the 2008 financial crisis, as more and more cosmetic retail outlets closed and revenues in the first quarter declined. According to recent predictions from around the world and existing trends, the global beauty business could see a 20–30% decline in sales by 2020. However, numerous signs point to the industry recovering just as it did follow the 2008 financial crisis, and this sector has been effective in creating generations of customers who exhibit high levels of loyalty.
The prices of mascara have been stable for the last few years. Although the outbreak has impacted mascara prices, the prices are expected to spike post-lockdown owing to the disruptions in logistic activities. The manufacturers are expected to increase mascara prices due to the increased operational and raw material costs and to make up for the losses caused due to the outbreak. Also, they might not provide any discounts or offers on mascara to stabilize the profit margins.
For most C&B product categories sold in the U.S. retail market during COVID-19, the average selling price increased. Notably, the assortment change is a significant cause of the "price hike." Apart from bath & body and haircare, American C&B companies offered more well-liked products in higher price ranges. As consumer needs changed in response to the pandemic, C&B companies also established new price tiers with distinctive product combinations. For instance, Charlotte Tilbury dramatically expanded their selection of cosmetics priced between $111 and $120 while removing those under $10. During the pandemic, they also see more fragrances costing more than $500, shaving products costing between $31 and $40, and skincare products costing more than $110 nationwide.
There were no shortages or delays in the first quarter of 2020 that would have had an impact on client shipments or sales. However, the period also witnessed a broad number of governmental and commercial impacts, including business slowdowns or shutdowns and significant travel restrictions. These events led to a significant decline in both regional economic activity and financial market valuations. As a result, the company's manufacturing mascara across the globe has not only witnessed operational disruption but also adversely impacted customer demand across the country. However, owing to covid-19 pandemic, people become more inclined towards organic products owing to the various benefits associated with it.

In FY2025 Personal Systems produced 70% of revenue at a 5.3% pre-tax segment margin while Printing produced 30% of revenue at an 18.7% margin, meaning Printing generated roughly 62% of total segment earnings on less than a third of the revenue. Management's declared strategy — "leading the Future of Work" — attempts to convert that hardware base into an AI-enabled, subscription-weighted platform through AI PCs, the Workforce Experience Platform, Poly collaboration hardware and the newly announced HP IQ intelligence layer. As of September 2026 the company is executing this transition under an interim chief executive, amid an acute DRAM/NAND cost shock and a formal search for a permanent CEO. HP Inc. is the Palo Alto–headquartered personal-computing and imaging/printing company that emerged from the November 2015 separation of the former Hewlett-Packard Company into two independent public companies. HP Inc. retained the legacy corporate registrant — it is the same legal entity as the original Hewlett-Packard Company, renamed — while the enterprise infrastructure, software and services businesses were spun into Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company. That legal continuity matters: HP Inc.'s SEC filings carry the original Commission file number and the original Delaware incorporation and IRS identification numbers, and the Form 10-K explicitly states that references to HP Inc. mean HP Inc. "(formerly Hewlett-Packard Company)" and its consolidated subsidiaries. --- ### HP's own description The FY2025 Form 10-K opens with the company's self-characterisation: HP describes itself as a global technology leader creating solutions that let people bring ideas to life and connect to what matters most, operating in more than 170 countries and delivering devices, services and subscriptions across personal computing, printing, 3D printing, hybrid work, gaming and adjacent technologies. The filing places artificial intelligence at the centre of its narrative, arguing that AI is transforming how people live and work and that customers are beginning to recognise benefits in security, speed and cost. It highlights a portfolio of AI PCs and workstations built for local AI processing, intelligent print features across home, office and graphics products, and a layered security proposition spanning security-enhanced PCs and printers, hardware-enforced endpoint security software for both HP and non-HP PCs, and endpoint security services using containment, isolation and AI deep-learning malware detection. Newer 2026 press-release boilerplate has tightened this language considerably: HP now describes itself as "a global technology leader redefining the Future of Work," operating in more than 180 countries and delivering AI-powered devices, software, services and subscriptions. The shift from "innovative and sustainable devices, services and subscriptions" (FY2025 10-K) to "innovative and AI-powered devices, software, services and subscriptions" (2026 releases) is a deliberate repositioning of the equity story from sustainability-and-devices to AI-and-software. ### Independent characterisation HP is best understood as three economically distinct businesses reported through two material segments. **The PC business is a scale-and-distribution business, not a technology business.** HP designs and specifies; it does not manufacture. The 10-K states plainly that HP uses outsourced manufacturers worldwide to build HP-designed products, relying on original manufacturers ("OMs") — with Taiwanese contract manufacturers named specifically for notebooks — and that HP represents a substantial portion of the business of certain OMs. Silicon comes from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA, with Qualcomm Snapdragon in selected Arm-based models; operating systems come from Microsoft and Google. HP's value-add is industrial design, security firmware, channel reach, procurement leverage, services attach and brand. The consequence is that HP's PC gross margin is a spread between component cost and street price, with very little insulation when component costs move violently — which is precisely what has happened in FY2026. **The printing business is a razor-and-blades annuity.** Supplies alone generated $10,916 million in FY2025, 65% of total Printing segment revenue and 19.7% of consolidated revenue, at margins far above the hardware. Printing's 18.7% FY2025 pre-tax segment margin is not an operating-leverage outcome; it is a consumables monopoly outcome, defended by supplies authentication technology ("Dynamic Security") which is itself the subject of persistent litigation and regulatory attention across multiple jurisdictions. The 10-K's own risk factors concede the structural problem in unusually direct language: secular decline in print demand from digitisation and hybrid work, competition from generic and remanufactured supplies, and customer migration from cartridge printers to refillable "big tank" printers which — HP states explicitly — carry higher initial hardware margin but "do not result in follow-on sales of high margin traditional ink cartridges and, as a result, may have lower overall device lifetime profitability." That is management admitting that its own product-mix shift is dilutive to lifetime economics. **The services, software and subscription overlay is the strategic bet.** This spans HP Instant Ink and the HP All-In Plan on the consumer side; managed print services, Device-as-a-Service and lifecycle services on the commercial side; the Workforce Experience Platform (WXP), Poly Lens and Wolf Security on the software side; and Poly hardware in meeting rooms. HP does not disclose a discrete revenue line for "subscriptions" or "software" in its segment note, which is a material transparency gap for anyone underwriting the transition thesis. The company reports only Commercial PS, Consumer PS, Supplies, Commercial Printing, Consumer Printing and Corporate Investments. ### Value chain position and route to market HP sits between component suppliers and a multi-tier distribution network, owning almost none of the physical production. The 10-K describes four channel archetypes — retailers, value-added resellers, distribution partners and systems integrators — and states that the majority of overall revenue is transacted through channel resellers, with direct/indirect mix varying by business and geography. This creates two structural exposures the filings acknowledge repeatedly: limited visibility into multi-tier channel inventory, and the risk of channel partners selling outside agreed territories or misrepresenting sell-through, which HP states has occurred historically and has damaged gross margins. Customer concentration is now material and newly so. The FY2025 segment note discloses that TD Synnex Corp accounted for 12% of HP's net revenue in FY2025, whereas no single customer represented 10% or more in FY2024 or FY2023. That is a new disclosure threshold crossing and a genuine concentration risk that did not exist twelve months earlier. ### Customer types and end markets Commercial customers span large enterprise, public sector (including education), and small and medium business, served with the Pro and Elite PC portfolios, Z workstations, thin clients, retail point-of-sale, and managed lifecycle services. Consumer customers are served through gaming (OMEN, Victus, HyperX), mainstream and premium notebooks (OmniBook, Envy, Pavilion, Spectre lineage), Chromebooks and home printing. Industrial and graphics end-markets — print service providers, packaging converters, commercial publishers, production mail — are addressed through Indigo, PageWide and Latex presses. Additive manufacturing customers are served through Multi Jet Fusion and Metal Jet.
